What don't I get??

I want a new car. I should buy a Kia because it costs half as much as a BMW right? I mean the both have 4 tires, 4 door and an engine. Only 'cool' people get a BMW right?

BTW what kind of computer are you using? I assume it was the cheapest one you could buy since it is all about price.

And what is with the Zune username? Couldn't you have bought a Craig MP3 player instead and saved a lot of money?

The ads have one message in mind, Apple's cost more than PCs and that is true. But they are not giving a fair comparison when they buy the cheapest PC the can find and pretend it is as good as a much more expensive Mac.

Go to Dell or some other site and price out a laptop with the same specs as the MacBook Pro and get back to me.

BTW I own both a Mac and a PC.

That is a crappy analogy, the Kia and the BMW don't have the same specs. The PC argument is that you can get better specs for less $$. It would be more like a 20k BMW vs a 40k BMW with a custom paint job or some other marginal difference.

LOL MS makes an honest commercial with actors and people are having a hissy fit over that? really? When Apple has lied and bent the truth in many of there commercials (with actors) and thats ok? I really don't get it.

My wife wants a laptop (she may be traveling a lot for her new job..if she gets it) we looked at them all. Apple's are just to fricken expensive. wich is why we are looking at MS based ones.

ok thats just fucking stupid.

Show me a Kia that has better specs then any BMW. try compareing something that actually fits. not something you try to make fit.

What if someone doesn't want to spend 40k on a BMW and they only need a car that gets them from a2b

cuts both ways

I don't need a 2.2mhz centrino with 4gb of ram and a 500gb 5400 rpm harddrive that can run HL2 @100fps

I fucking need a laptop with 2 finger scroll and is so easy to use my GF can use it =P

TBH I have no idea what the specs of my MB are. I've never once worried about it and it's never felt deficient. I just picked the middle of the road MB (at significant discount..) and ran with it.

Oh, I definitely don't need my machine, but I had a high budget :) At least you get it, profjohn is out in left field.

I treat laptops as disposable, especially for travelers, and buy accordingly. $700 is the absolute maximum I'd spend on a laptop, with $500 or less being closer to my goal. That way if it gets dropped, stolen, or whatever it isn't a huge tragedy. They cost too much to fix if you don't do it yourself with scavenged parts, so it's easier to buy another one in case of catastrophe.

I'm using my Eee900 as my traveling computer, and I gave my mother my Vista Lenovo as it was better than what she had. Te Eee fits my traveling needs perfectly.

yeah i thought of that after some jerkoff at the airport stole my laptop. though i got it used for $300 so im not to pissed.

she only wants it for live feed so she can talk to the kids and some games (nothing new) so i don't think she needs anything amazing.

Think of it this way:
Imagine if Kia gave someone $13,150 and said go buy a four door car with AC and an automatic.

The person then goes to a Honda and Toyota dealer, but cries that they don't have enough to buy one of those 'cool' cars and then drives off in a new Kia.

We'd all be laughing our asses off at Kia if it tried that.

BTW Lauren is an actress. Google Lauren De Long to see her site. More pics, but she looks cuter in that commercial than in any of her pics.

Doesn't pretty much exactly that ad campaign exist for a Hyundai? The one that says "Here's the 14K corolla" and then shows an empty podium? I don't remember anyone laughing, I do remember Hyundai being one of the few automaters to increase sales during the recession though.

The new MacBook Pro looks and feels quite sturdy, has good technical specs and has very impressive battery life (7 hours for the 15")

However, I could get two or three comparable Dells for the price of one MacBook Pro. Worth it for some, not for me.

I don't know about the 15", but for the 13" it is definitely not like that. I actually tried to spec the 13" from both Dell (XPS Studio) and the new Macbook Pro last month, they ended up about exactly the same price. With $100 student discount and free iPod Touch + printer for the Mac, it's a no contest for me.

no, usually (and especially in the laptops in the commercials) it's more like an old camaro compared to a bmw. sure, the camaro may be as fast or faster than the bimmer, but it's got crappy ergonomics, materials aren't as good, fit and finish aren't as good, and it'll be a rattle trap before long.

Why are these commercials even under discussion? Real people in the real world have budgets that they have to stick to. Not everyone can afford a Mercedes or BMW. Most people want to get the most for the money. They are just letting people know that you can get a similar spec'd laptop for cheaper which is true. I don't see what the problem is.

i'd argue that unless you're getting an all metal exterior, light weight, good ergonomics, great battery life, etc., you're not really getting similar specs. and once you do start getting that sort of stuff, the price goes right up to, and often above, the mac options. (oh sure there's the one last plastic mac that no one cares about, exception to prove the rule, as it were). further, running os x isn't always an easy proposition, so there is another spec letdown.

When you're in a budget you go for the most specs you can afford which is what the commercials are conveying. Even if you spend $2000 on a PC laptop you're still going to get more computer for the money. No one can argue that.

Also you're saying not getting OSX is a spec letdown???

The point is, you cannot get any of those things at these budgets. Basically all you are proving is that Macs are a premium product and thus you pay a premium price. That is the entire point of these commercials. They are saying for what most people want/need and what their budgets are, you can get Windows PCs that fit.

You can also get a 13" Dell laptop with identical specs to the MacBook for $700. I think the only difference is the integrated graphics. With Dell, you pay a premium for 'XPS' just like you do for Apple.
