wow ... you remember my history!?!
:Q

i better be careful which story i tell :p

actually, it was my 9800xt that fried when the fan got disconnected

my x850xt got warm ... but that's about all ... i only o/c'd it to PE to 'test' it and i sold it last month for $100 and shipping costs ... it was a *great* card for $200 2 years ago ... and frankly i wish i kept it

since i did not ... i might as well turn my *bad* experience into a learning lesson ... i recommend video cards here - often nvidia - but frankly, i am very one-sided ... i have no actual *experience* with nvidia cards [except for my friend's rigs]

at the most it will be 15% plus shipping ... and i may well end up keeping it

at any rate ... i have to spend money or *do without*
I think I woudl suffer through the 30 days of waiting to have the 1950pro back...it's a sweet card and will last you another year.

I have an old PCI graphics card if you want it to tide you over so you at least have something 2D to use. LMK.

huh?

i AM getting my x1950p back ... and using an 8MB SIS pci card to access the forums and 2D aps.

Would you wait a *whole month* and just set aside your current games?
:Q

and what if returned-from-RMA x1950p is defective also? :p
--check the forums at Sapphire ... there are a LOT of *issues* :(

it takes about a month from ticket to return ... sometimes more ... :(

in the *meantime* i have a $210 'replacement' with a $50 MIR if i decide to keep it and sell my [new, returned from RMA] Sapphire for a small loss.

OR ... IF i do NOT like the 7800GS, i will return it to NewEgg ["not satisfied"] and [gladly] pay the $30 restocking fee OR offer to get "credit" towards a 900+w PS for my current rig [x1950p] and also my future x-fire rig.

OR ... i can just take a loss on the GS and sell it in FS/T ...

or in frustration sell 'em both and buy a 8800gtx pcie rig

but they have my money ... it's on the way

and thanks

IF I like it, I will keep it and will sell my x1950p when I get it back ?

Glad to see that you are giving NVIDIA a shot, it's the only way to really cut through the bull IMO. However, I would be really surprised if you like the 7800GS better. In my experiences with ATI/NV R5x0/G7x, I personally always liked the ATI cards better as a single card, whereas I pretty much had to have two when going with NV. :)

well ... i joked about nvidia and nvidia fans enough ... it's time for a personal *serious reevaluation* of their product ... since everything is *timing* ... it's time ;)

i do NOT expect the 7800s to be better than the x1950p [obviously] ... just better than my x850xt and i DO want SM3.0 support ... now
[ i was really satisfied with my x850xt and not that awfully impressed with the x1950 ... for $250 ... it IS about 1/4 to 1/3rd faster ... maybe]

i paid $250 for my x1950p and will only pay $160 for the GS after MIR ... that IS a consideration ... and considering that i am upgrading fully next year it woud be OK if my current games run well ... perhaps i will upgrade to nvidia ... this will give me a *preview* what to expect ... including IQ, features i use, and driver support

you'll hear all about it ... stay tuned

:D

and *opinionated*

of course

nonsense

if my emoticon usage gets in the way of your comprehension ... nothing will help you ... please pass my posts and threads by

and 'yes' ... i complained about it here before that my Sapphire felt and looked 'cheap' ... like a flashy-dressed whor ... well ... cheap
:Q

:D

It's pretty easy to pick the G71 BFG 7800GS's from the older G70 models....they have a different HSF unit, the older ones use a HSF that resemble the reference design and has a fluorescent green fan on it. The newer ones have a huge Copper HSF unit with a clear fan that has a blue LED on it.
thanks, Stumps ... i saw this in answer to my post in that 'other' thread

No problems....you should be happy with the 7800GS....as long as you overclock it and keep it cool, at stock speeds they are pretty dissapointing.

I liked mine, but I got greedy for performance...I hope it doesn't come back and bite me in the ass...but I still have my BFG so it's no hassle if it fails...I still can game with out a major loss of performance....the 7800GS should be alot easier on your PSU as well, I currently have mine running in my P4 3.06@3.45ghz with a 350w Antec PSU, it only has 16a on the 12v and hasn't given any problems yet.

if you don't need Purevideo use the 84.21's, they give much better performance with 7800GS's than the later 9x.xx series.

I'd take a look to see if there's any way to unlock the disabled quad to get full-blown 7900GT performance (like the Gainward). Its a relatively simple process using RivaTuner if RivaTuner supports NVstrap for the G71, but that's assuming the extra quad isn't laser-locked on the 7800GS like it was when it was using the G70 core on the older parts.

Pretty sure RivaTuner will tell you which core its running, for instance my 8800GTS shows right below the Target Adapter area:

320-bit G80 (A2,96sp) with 640MB DDR3

If you can't unlock the extra quad, you should still benefit from a G71 core with more OC'ing headroom, lower heat and power consumption. Nice card at a nice price though, wish it was that much when I had to replace my poor 9700pro. :(

I had a good look at that when I discovered my 7800GS was a G71 with 2 quads and 2 vp's disabled...the BFG cards need a BIOS update to allow them to be unlocked via rivatuner...however the required BIOS doesn't exsist.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=31&threadid=1996447&enterthread=y

it's pretty much the same deal like the G71 based Leadtek and XFX 7800GS's...the only difference is that people were often able to use a modified 7900GS or GT bios depending on how many quads and VP's were locked in the core, with those two brands...no one has done it yet for the BFG cards.

Sadly, no it won't... G80 and G7x is pretty much night and day in almost all of those areas. The IQ you get from G7x won't really be any indicator of how G80 will compare to R600...

The drivers are also much, much more mature for G7x. I beleive that this will be a similar situation with R5xx and R600 as well though. A lot of changes being made this year with a new Direct 3D and a whole new OS, couple that with the fact that everything still needs to be DX9 compatible.

sure it does ... i get an *idea* of the way nvidia works today ... my LAST nvidia experience was their First GeForce[256/SDR] ... and i didn't like it much ... although it was much faster than the competition [Rage Fury32]

i get to experience the IQ, driver support and features of a "modern" midrange nvidia GPU
[i already have that experience with ATi]

when i decide to upgrade next year ... i will have much better 'picture' ... and perhaps i can recommend better here

after my experience with Sapphire, i am not sure i would recommend their x1950p

not really. you'll get an idea of now nvidia worked (taking a que from you) **yesterday** :p

i get to experience the IQ, driver support and features of a "modern" midrange nvidia GPU

"semi modern" :p

i've messed around with the 8800. the IQ is comparable to what ati has had with r500 (perhaps even better), whereas the 7000 series were a bit behind. i've no problem you want to check out nvidia, but keep in mind you're checking out **yesterday's** nvidia. **today's** nvidia is clearly superior.

when i decide to upgrade next year ... i will have much better 'picture' ... and perhaps i can recommend better here

only if you want to upgrade to 'yesterday's' nvidia. the 8800 series is sooo much better. not only in image quality, but performance - you'' actually be able to use the AA with the 8800 :p

@ 500mhz my 7800GS was about on par with an x850xt; maybe a slight bit faster, but it wasn't that much faster than my oc'd 6800gt. it was a g70core, so you might get a bit more overclock, but 50mhz more on the core is still not going to put it into 7900gt performance (esp since all those are oc'd like crazy). at any rate, the point is don't judge the 8x00 series (iq or performance) on a crippled g71 core.

after my experience with Sapphire, i am not sure i would recommend their x1950p

So bad, i heard about your Sapphire card, i'm sorry.
I don't know why but ALL X1950PRO series got something wrong designed.
What to say more if 90% of card owners got problem?
That's why i'm holding to buy it and that's why i was fearing to buy it.
How i got 99% of cards failure is PSU, because it req's higher Amperage.
AGP system owners got 3-4 year old PC's and 4 years ago noone was expected from graphic card like thise high req's, they got all low quality PSU's.
When new card arrived, we hoped to save litle until AGP system will really became unusable and upgrade just Graphic Card, but new card is just SO POWERFUL old systems
can't work with it.
That's why everyone have problems.
I don't know what to do by myself: buy $230 "outdated" Garphic card and and spend
for PSU additional $100 ? it will cost for me $350.
8800GTS cards became cheaper then $350 and will be $300 soon.
Maube it's time to UPGRADE?

lol.. aside from plagerizing what i stated in another thread, the fact that many agp systems have old crappy psu's does not make the x1950 pro 'defective'. sheesh...

and if you're worried about having to buy a good psu to run the x1950pro, i don't see the point. if you get a good one (such as the corsair 620w HX or the OCZ gamexstream 700w), you can simply use the for your next build. either one will run 8800gts SLI with no problems. regardless of getting the x1950pro or upgrading the mainboard, cpu, memory, and ram along with a GTS, you're still going to have to replace a crappy psu.

Give it a rest already! ... not *everyone* ... just Sapphire from my reading

the Sapphires are just cheaply made ... and i think the first batch is somewhat defective from looking at their forums

as to the PS ... my 480w ThermalTake exceeds the minimum ... the 30a on the 12v rail is for a LOADED system ... mine is minimal except for a mild cpu o/c at stock voltage.

i seriously doubt it was my PS ... it ran flawlessly for over a month ... then crapped out
like a cheap hooker on a last run of crystal meth ...
:D

the x1950p was designed for systems like mine ... i think sapphire was cheap on the components, imo

and i AM buying a new PS ... sooner or later ... if i keep the returned x1950p it will be sooner ;)

i'm thinking i will need at least 900w for a xfire [or sli] system
