The trade-off is you get to live in Cuba. The next biggest town is Olean (hope you like old people and sports bars). 2 hours from Buffalo and killer snowstorms every winter. They'd have to pay me that much to live there.
 
I might seriously get my father into this, hes always wanted to invest in a second house. No idea what this area is like though. Besides with this 1.5car garage and the house we have now, we'd effectively have a full 3 car garage(1.5car garage is a huge pita for people that care about their cars).

unfortunately unless buying new you are not going to get other than 'as is'.

If you are a used home buyer as-is is canonical.

median new home price in the US is hovering around $215k.

Most internet saavy people do not live in most of the US.
 
Anyone else notice that the estimated property taxes are $1500. for a $40K house? I pay less than that for my $390K house in Kahleeforneeya...AND I don't have to deal with snow...(yeah, I'm taxed on the $130 I paid for it 7 yrs ago)

If you know of houses that cheap in/around Chico, you could make a mint on them...None of the real estate sites I went to listed anything less than $250K in the "metro" Chico area...PLUS, being a college town, and an easy drive to Sacto, I'd expect real estate to be rather spendy...

I would expect a higher tax rate like that in an area where house values are so low. It's not like low house values makes it cheaper to educate kids (which is where a large percentage of property taxes go).

I'd love to buy a house for $40k, but you can't get broadband Internet there so no deal. 😉

Yeah taxes on my $40k house are $400 a year.
