Houses were much more sturdily built back then, hence they last. The framing is most likely hardwood, rather than pine... the 2x4's are of course, 2 inches by 4 inches... Most likely, the place has hardwood floors throughout, but I've never been in there.

That looks like a very nice and solid home.
That being said I'm not about to move out of the NW burbs area of Chicago.

if the house has been taken care of i am willing to bet that it is far better then most of the crap built today.

as Drpizza said the house has real 2x4's. and real word floors.

I had a house that was built in the 1870's. it was great. only bad part of the house was it had NO closet space.

today's houses are made very cheaply and have many problems.

If it was in the East Bay, it would probably be selling for $800K or more...hard to find a doghouse for under $500K there anymore...

Being sold "as is".

thats always what you want to read in a house description. I won't buy a mouse off of ebay if that tagline is added let alone a house

That means, when you're making the purchase offer, you don't get to say "if you'll fix that cracked pane of glass" - the bank won't fix a thing, except to install smoke detectors (if they're not in there) as obligated by the law. Otherwise, other than new homes, homes generally don't come with warranties.

banks don't have to fix smoke detectors. They can require it to close if it's the law, but they aren't fixing that.

all used homes are sold as-is. This is why there is a career in home inspections.

I live in a 1930s house, and it's the same way. Very solidly built, but NO closet space. And you have to walk through the second bedroom to get to the first or third bedrooms, and there is no door between the second and third bedrooms, just an archway. Very solid house though, I just wish there was some logic to where they put the studs back then, because finding studs through a plaster wall can be a pain.

Maybe you missed that it's a foreclosure? The bank owns the house, therefore, they're the ones obligated by law to make sure they're installed and operating correctly.

I responded to the RE agent Friday or Saturday, got the response, with a link with a slide show of 8 pics, today:
Dear David,
My name is Tina Lavrey and I recieved an email that you where interested in more information on the property located at 6438 Habgood Road. I am sending an 8 photo brochure attachment along with this email. This housse is huge. It does need siding, but the house is quite a deal. If you are very interested in this one though you must move quickly because there has been an offer put in, it hasn't been accepted yet though. Also, if this isn't the home for you I would be more than happy to put out a search for you. All I need to know is what area you would like to live in, how much land, how many bedrooms, and your price range. Feel free to call me anytime, my cell phone number is #716-432-9671. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely, Tina Lavrey

Dayum, that is alot for tax..

On another note, if I stopped paying taxes on our current home, I could take that money and have that house free and clear in about 3.3 years!!! Sick.
