I admit that I might not have given it enough of a chance and I'll try to go back when I'm in a different frame of mind and try again.

The thing that really bothered me was first of all the smiley face. OK, I get the idea of having a silly monster but can't you do better than a smiley face? I liked the cephalopod angle. I thought that was original. And I didn't really have a problem with his being virtually omnipotent. That sort of added to the whole mystery of the premise. I didn't even mind that they pulled the idea of having him teach a middle school class out their butts. Or the fact that he wasn't actually an alien but was from earth. Just the whole presentation with the silly comments and the silly persona . . . I guess I just wasn't in the mood for it. But I'll try again.

Yeah, as mentioned, you get to find out his entire backstory about halfway into season 2. It's really meant to be more of a silly, slice-of-life show. Think of it as a slight change to the typical anime formula of a weird and wacky teacher coming into a class of misfits, and helping them figure out their problems. If you want something slightly more serious, just go watch Great Teacher Onizuka... that's pretty much the most popular example of the aforementioned formula. Plus, GTO has excellent OPs (OP 1 and OP 2)! I normally skip them, but I'll watch them each time with GTO.

Tried to watch Assassination Classroom. Got through the pilot ok. I thought it was a bit over the top but meh, not crazy bad. But I couldn't get through the first episode. I don't know if it's called fan service or what, but all of the asides to the audience and all of the self-referencing comments finally got on my nerves. Especially because it seemed that they were there mainly to distract from how stupid the premise was.
Are you watching the dubbed version? The dub version is better than the sub IMO because the ENG VA for Koro Sensei is better acted and the jokes stayed the same. There is hardly any fanservice in AC ONLY Miss Bitch, you get the boobie sexy looking fine lady scenarios. Oh and Koro sensei pervy imaginations. That is all really. You need to soldier through the mid-point in the series to understand everyone's emotions because there is ALOT of character development and ofc you get to know Koro Sensei back story too and it's really good. 2nd season is better especially the last 3 episodes. So good, I cried :(

I've watched dubs with subs and the thing I've noticed is the dubs do such a better job of relaying the cultural nuances. The subs come across as flat and cryptic. Sometimes you have no idea wtf they're on about. But listening to the dub you're like, oh, right. So that's what they meant.

huh? the dubs are the ones missing out on cultural nuance. I don't speak Japanese, but I get the emotions they are conveying.

I don't know what the correct term is called, but in shows like Gintama, when they tell a joke (Japanese jokes that foreigners dont understand) the screen shows you a little info explaing you the meaning of the joke in English subtitles. Don't know if you have noticed that or not :D

+1
I can't process it fast enough to watch raws just yet (ruins the viewing experience if you keep backtracking on some lines), but you lose a lot in bad subs / dubs, eg. honorifics, wordplay (important in series like Monogatari, Chihayafuru, or even jokes in general here and there), informality (using the informal versions of certain words), etc.

I agree with you, it's totally based on manga (which I adore too) and is really cool too :) But I don't like graphics in it, it becomes better in later parts but in the first one it looks not very good for me :confused_old: And I don't like soundtrack in it at all, excepts Suilen songs and one old from the previous Hellsing, it's awful in general which always makes me very sad :(
It's only my opinion but I still don't understand why they didn't work with Yasushi Ishii again, in that case new Hellsing would be much better
Yh the early 2006 animation were bad then gradually they increased the quality. Did you know Hellsing Ultimate took 10 years to adapt 10 episodes? 1 year = 1 episode haha.

Basically the only shows I enjoyed this season is Uchoten Kazoku and Re-Creators. Boku no Hero Academia is borderline. Saekano dragged a bit at the end. Sword Oratorio was a letdown.

Saw My Neighbor Totoro in the theater yesterday. It was a cute little movie. I don't think it was on the same level as say Spirited Away, but it was fun and entertaining. Lots of very young children in the theater. It's an absolutely perfect kids' movie.

Totoro is a great film. Spirited Away is for much older kids. Also, Spirited away was made like 13 years after Totoro.
