I admit that I might not have given it enough of a chance and I'll try to go back when I'm in a different frame of mind and try again.
The thing that really bothered me was first of all the smiley face. OK, I get the idea of having a silly monster but can't you do better than a smiley face? I liked the cephalopod angle. I thought that was original. And I didn't really have a problem with his being virtually omnipotent. That sort of added to the whole mystery of the premise. I didn't even mind that they pulled the idea of having him teach a middle school class out their butts. Or the fact that he wasn't actually an alien but was from earth. Just the whole presentation with the silly comments and the silly persona . . . I guess I just wasn't in the mood for it. But I'll try again.
Yeah, as mentioned, you get to find out his entire backstory about halfway into season 2. It's really meant to be more of a silly, slice-of-life show. Think of it as a slight change to the typical anime formula of a weird and wacky teacher coming into a class of misfits, and helping them figure out their problems. If you want something slightly more serious, just go watch Great Teacher Onizuka... that's pretty much the most popular example of the aforementioned formula. Plus, GTO has excellent OPs (OP 1 and OP 2)! I normally skip them, but I'll watch them each time with GTO.
