I'm thinking of watching Clannad (original) soon - yeah or nay?

Any quick recommendations for other dubbed anime? I love supernatural plots like Trinity, Helsing, Witch Hunter Robin (one of my all time faves).

Watch Clannad multiple times. Have boxes of tissues handy.

Just watched "The Garden of Words" last night which is a short (~45m) [animated] film from a few years ago. It's kind of a love/coming of age story. I really enjoyed it but I think it could have been longer, certain segments are 'glossed over' with montages/timelapse type sequences and I think seeing a little more of the main characters' backgrounds or interactions together would have been worthwhile. I think it could have provided more context for the emotional climax - during which the dialogue is a little inexplicable/unexpected. Though their emotions are running high so maybe that's intentional as well.

The animation is also absolutely astounding. Rain plays a big part in the film and every drop hitting the ground is picturesque. Cityscapes or views of parts of nature/parks are used to convey the passage of time/weather/etc and they're beautifully done. There's one shot in particular of a birdseye view of a park with two umbrellas (the main characters) both moving towards the same pagoda from opposite sides of the path that I really loved.

Despite what I think could have been done better I still found it very genuine and provided that kind of 'uplift' that romance you buy into can induce. It'll probably be a little slow/not have enough happen for some viewers (kind of like Garden State perhaps) but I look forward to watching it again some rainy evening.

And not to go too far down the rabbit hole but if you watch/like it there's some really great AMVs out there that pair clips from the movie with Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful" which I found to be pretty damn amazing. Some have 'spoiler' footage though.

After putting it off for quite a while I just blew through the second seasons of Knights of Sidonia and Psycho-Pass. "Seasons" of twelve 20 minute episodes ought to be illegal.

Just finished Paranoia Agent. First half was excellent, second half completely dropped the ball and made the entire thing meaningless. Disappointing.

Man Dragon Ball Super is sloooooow. I forgot how bad this stuff got with Z when I was little. What did I ever see in this? :\

If you really like dubbed anime, try an oldie called Yu Yu Hakusho,

it is a great old anime

Can't stand Kuabara's dubbed voice.

Is it bad that I get my hopes up that this next season's Gundam show might actually be good?

Sounds like what happens to most anime. They come out of the gate with tons of promise and they just can't close. The only anime that I've watched lately that I thought was consistently good was Ore Monogatari!!

The rating on DBS is shrinking. The quality of the show is disgustingly bad.

I've still only seen two episodes of that. I'm behind on a few series. :(

I gave up after one or two episodes when I realized that they were rehashing the Battle of Gods movie. Haven't they learned from making Kai that people don't want the drawn-out crap anymore? Although, I guess it doesn't help that there's a manga that came out not long before the show. I'm not entirely sure if they're just parallel media releases (i.e. independent of each other) or if the anime is based upon the manga's story (like usual).

haikyu season 2 supposedly starts tomorrow, no sign of it on crunchyroll.

not sure how far they will get but any of the tournament match ups should be epic.

The new anime season has begun! What is everyone watching? Of course, I have to check out the new Gundam series, and after only being 10 minutes into it, I'm already worried. For some reason, poorly-written stories have this tendency to just toss their "actors" into the limelight right at the beginning. (Actors is in quotes because it's meant to be people/groups that push the plot, not only single characters.) Well, to be fair, I also normally complain about ridiculously ornate names for characters, but we've got a guy named Biscuit! Although, it almost seems like we've gone back to Wing. You've got the incredibly detached boy (Mikazuki) and the girl giving him attention (Cordelia). The girl is even trying to attain peace... might as well just rename her Releena and be done with it!

It looks like there are a few other mecha anime, and I'll be checking those out too. Here are a few that I'm going to be taking a peek at so far...

  • Lance 'N Masques
  • K - Return of Kings -- I've never seen the others in this series though...
  • Gakusen Toshi Asterisk
  • Shingeki! Kyojin Chuugakkou -- Because who doesn't want to ride the Shigeki Money Express? :p
  • Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry
  • One-Punch Man
  • Concrete Revolutio
  • Comet Lucifer

Never seen the original. That's the volleyball anime, right? Is it worth watching? Everyone talks up other sports shows like Kuroko no Baske, but I tend to have a hard time getting into some of those.

Haikyu is the volleyball one.
one of the best sports series ive read/watched. most of the other genre types typically give the protagonists some sort of uber chu super ultra OP skill/ability that bears no resemblance to reality, but other than the one main character setter the rest of the casts are normal humans. (baby steps keeps it human vs prince of tennis making everyone jump to supersayajin mode every few chapters.)
haikyu has dead solid pacing and story development while introducing the basic rules of the sport to the audience(mostly because they follow the manga almost directly). the voice acting and music is some of the best fitting i've seen in a while. emotionally they hit their marks every time.

the beginning can feel a little slow if you dont buy into it at the start, but by the 4th or 5th ep you should be invested. after that they ramp up the plot pacing like mad. i ended up jumping to the manga after ep5 because i couldnt wait a week to find out how things developed.

my main fascination with it is as a story writing exercise. after watching the first 10 eps, if you understand the japanese school year/student athlete system then extrapolation of the next 300 chapters is entirely possible. (you need to read the manga for this since they list each character's height/position/year in school every few chapters). the mangaka seeds in tons of foreshadowing in very subtle bits all over the place, generally a sign that he has a very solid plan for things down the line.

i watched knight lancer, cutesy with gag format and a hint of menace plotline. i would add heavy object to your list: giant super tanks fighting duels in place of national wars. it started as a light novel. seems like fun, but i cant quite classify it as a mecha series since all the tanks are primarily spheres.

Ah, okay. I'll give that a look! I'm really far behind on Baby Steps' second season, but I do like that show. While I have also seen all of Prince of Tennis, I just couldn't get into Shin Tennis no Ouji-sama. I think part of the problem is the lack of good music, because I thought TenniPuri actually had some good music. When you've got songs like this, this, and this, how can you hate it? :p Some of my favorites have probably been Major and Cross Game. Although, Cross Game is more of a drama than a sports series.

Ooops, it's actually on the list, but I missed it. I usually just check Anichart and make note of all the ones that are listed as mecha. :p

EDIT:

Okay, One Punch Man was pretty fun. It reminds me a bit of the silliness of Tentai Senshi Sunred.

Iroha Hanasaku looks interesting. Found the preview on my Cardcaptor Sakura blu ray and looks like it will be a nice story and excellent visuals. Might take a look at that.

Will also probably grab the Ranma 1/2 blu ray collection too at some point(though my new desktop blew away much of my hobby budget). I really liked the english voice acting in the first season, but the VA change afterward really sucks and ruins continuity for me, so will probably go Japanese here.

Also, Digimon in Japanese is pretty bauss, especially Digimon 02. Excellent music.
