Until I can play crysis at very high settings, watch 1080p mkv's, have a 12 hr battery life, is less than 1/2" thick and under $200 dollars, $100 would be perfect, I'm going to pass.

I want one, but I'm waiting until we see a bit better battery life. A lot of times it would be nice to have my own environment available for basic tasks such as getting on one of several VPNs without having to set up the VPN on whoever's computer is handy, etc. But a lot of the time I'm just using a web app or accessing remote terminal sessions/VMs anyway, so it's not like a need much local computing power. A netbook seems like the perfect solution to me.

The other thing I'd like is a touch screen tablet web browser such as this one.

http://www.techcrunch.com/2009...et-update-prototype-b/

That'd be an awesome device just to have around the house. Access to a very basic web environment while lounging on the couch or sitting in the backyard while having a beer would be great. I don't need all the features of a full laptop or even a netbook at that point. I just want to look up info on a show or pull up a video game FAQ. Simple tasks for a simple device. I like simple. Complexity for complexity's sake doesn't do anything for me.

i seen a really big fat lady one day at kinkos that had one, she pulled it out of your huge-moungus purse.....and i laughed so hard i had to play it off. Not my style and way to small. They make them so you can buy them and break them and buy another one....

I always thought they were stupid, at least for what I want a computer for. So I never wasted money on those pieces of crap just to have it be cool for a week then sit there.

I don't like laptop keyboards or pointing devices at all, so I'd imagine I'd hate the netbook for that.

One of the few times I want net access outside of work or home is when I'm at the video store and want to look up movies on IMDB. In that case I think if I got a smartphone it would work. But in general I just don't have enough of a need for a computer/internet while away from work or home.

No use for a laptop either. So in my case I generally only have a use for a computer while I'm sitting down at home or work, so a desktop is best for me in regards to screen, keyboard/mouse, and performance.

I never wanted one; I just don't have a use for it. Then again, I don't even have a cell phone.

Uhhh, don't they cost the same as an iPhone? And I'd rather have similar functionality to a real computer than a glorified PDA such as the iPhone.

If there was a device that jumped the shark, it's the iPhone.

Well, as long as you're not including the two year contract you get with the iPhone...

We have a couple in the lab at work (Acer Aspire). They're pretty useful to have around for programming boards or running a GUI. Otherwise they're too small to do much.

I realize I may be waiting a while, but I want to get a full 8 hour work day out of it.

with sdk and shell access the iphone is about as close to a palmtop computer as it gets.

Yes, because there will be any laptop within the next 5 years that will fit that.

What I think this thread shows is that a netbook is great for some people, but doesn't fit everyone's needs. Just because they don't fit yours does not make them stupid or pointless. Personally, I think they're selling well because they do fit a lot of people's needs, they're more than a fad. They're much more portable (and thus usable) than the cheap 15.4" laptops a lot of people buy. They're not perfect yet, but they haven't been around long at all, so obviously they'll evolve as time goes by.

if the rumor's true and Apple's releasing a 10" tablet that's basically a huge iPod Touch. I'll be sleeping outside the Apple store 3 days to make sure I get it on launch day. That won't be a fad, it will be the next thing. I love my iPhone and Touch to death, the thought of a 10" one on steroids is beyond bad ass.

I technically own one. Got an hp pavilion dv2 for $549 at Office Depot and I love it. My only gripe is that my 4 year old Inspiron 9300, complete with GeForce 6800 Go that might as well need its own battery, gets better battery life.

Neffing on Inspiron 9300: About 4 hours
BF2 on Inspiron 9300: About 2 hours
Neffing on dv2: About 2 hours :|

Performance wise, I'm basically using the same computer. The Athlon Neo isn't any noticeably slower than my Pentium M 735 was, I just wish I would've waited ONE DAY for the Neo X2 dv2 to come out. Grrr.

Posting from a new S10-2 right now. For $300, it meets my expectations of a netbook: small, cheap, light, good battery life (3.5hrs max CPU/brightness/wifi, 7 1/2 on low CPU/brightness/wifi off), and capable of basic computing tasks. If you are complaining about things like small screen size, or not enough processing power to run high end games/HD video, you don't understand the niche a netbook is meant to fill.

I was interested in getting a netbook since the eee PC line came out. I have a desktop, and had many laptops over the years, but all I really need for portable computing is a light netbook I can stuff in my backpack and use at libraries, coffee shops, outside in a park, etc. I think computer manufacturers are finally hitting the sweet spot when it comes to producing useful computers than nearly everyone can afford.

Again, netbooks are limited, no doubt, but all computers are limited by different factors, and determining which type of computer is best for you depends on your personal preferences and requirements. I'm not "over netbooks" as if it were some sort of fad that was catching on (though popularity is definitely skyrocketing). I have always used whatever technology works best for my needs. Tech pragmatism: use what works for you.

I begrudgingly got a laptop finally, so my opinion of netbooks is even lower. Huge full tower desktops ftw

Gone through a few...the original 8GB EeePC 701, MSI Wind, and Lenovo S10. I think it's safe to say no more netbooks for me.

Sold my S10 and ordered a Vostro.

I love my 900A, fits in my backpack and once I got used to it makes taking notes in class a breeze. It also gets a ton of looks.

My only complaint is battery life (3 hours) and the flash player on linux (Running EEEbutu NBR 3.1). If I were to do it again I would have gotten the 1100AH or whatever the model is that gets 8-9hrs of battery life.
