not until they can play HD movies. h.264 is a must. and for the $700-800 asus wants for one with nvidia's chipset i can go buy a regular small notebook like a dell 14".

I just got a new laptop - I took a look at some netbooks, but ultimately spent a little more money and got a 13" laptop instead. Still small/portable, but WAY beefier hardware-wise. Plus it actually has a damn DVD/CD drive!

I guess I'm the opposite. Netbooks are the evolution of notebooks that I've been waiting a decade for. They do everything I would want to do in a mobile setting and they're the perfect size - small enough to carry, big enough to have useful screens and keyboard. My modded Dell Mini9 is awesome, and quite speedy. It also has no moving parts, which is great.

Was there something you didn't like about the Toshiba Libretto a decade ago? :p

wat didthey run? $2500?

Never got into them ...

Eventually maybe a tablet might spark my interests, but otherwise I'll stick with full sized PC's or 14+ inch laptops...

HD? Just how close to the screen are you watching from? Or are you talking about hooking it up to a real display?

Picked up one, tried it for a few hours, went back to my trusty laptop.
Too small, esp. the screen, small keyboard, not for me.

I'm pretty happy with my Mini 9, it serves its purpose. Runs very well, especially after putting Win 7 on it.

At 12" my tx2500 is about as small as I can comfortably type on. Anything smaller and it would be too small. I never understood the rush to purchase these underpowered/mini sized machines.

this, too damned small for me. Even the 14" notebooks are too small for me to comfortably use.

This. The 10" screen is just much too small. I feel like I'm using my daughter's toy Barbie laptop.

I've never really gotten into "netbooks". I always have my Palm Treo Pro in my pocket, and I can do any kind of light-duty messaging/socializing/browsing I want to, with that. If I need to have access to a full-scale computing environment, I nearly always have my Thinkpad X200 nearby. It's light enough to carry almost everywhere, it's bigger than the tiny netbooks that are all the rage (not to mention more durably constructed), and it's got plenty of power built into it.

I have a Mini 9, bumped up the RAM to 2G, 64G SSD, even put an "n" wifi card in it, installed Windows 7, hell, I have M$ Office on it. :D

The current bottleneck appears to be video.

What are you doing in the coffee shop yourself? Or are you just looking through the window?

Probably on facebook on his Iphone 2G, wishing he could copy and paste.

Looking through the window or grabbing a coffee myself. Those types of people usually try to position themselves at the windows to get the most attention paid to them.

I don't have an iphone.

9" is the *largest* I want my display. I can easily fit my Eee in a cargo pocket. It's small and light, exactly what I'm looking for in a note(net)book. I also like having power, and physical limitations. It's fun getting things to work with available resources instead of being virtually limitless like my desktop is. I still have a HP 200LX I use on occasion. I wouldn't mind seeing something similar return, but a little more updated.

i don't want to convert the video

and if i'm watching video on a notebook it's usually been with the notebook sitting on my chest. so really close.

I think the best target market for them is occasional travelers. Someone who just needs to get online to check email and stuff but doesn't want to have another carry on bag just for the lappy.

...that said, they jumped the shark. Then went back for a second pass and Sony did this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bnIcLjNCu5U

I never get tired of the pretentious douchbags that judge the worth of a tool based on the handful of samples in their small worthless life.

I wish they'd finally make one that was a tablet...that would be useful for me as a student.
