You think you hate them now? Wait until they cripple them with a stripped to the bare version of Windows 7...

not until they can play HD movies. h.264 is a must. and for the $700-800 asus wants for one with nvidia's chipset i can go buy a regular small notebook like a dell 14".

HD? Just how close to the screen are you watching from? Or are you talking about hooking it up to a real display?

i don't want to convert the video

and if i'm watching video on a notebook it's usually been with the notebook sitting on my chest. so really close.

Sounds awkward...

I'm running Ubuntu 8.04 with full Compiz effects enabled. It's very feature rich, and modern :^)

Be great for ebooks, movies, mobile web, etc

After using a dual core tablet for the last few months, I'll pass...

Slow as hell with a core duo, it'll really suck on an Atom.

Same here. I mean, I'd use one to look up stuff on IMDB while watching TV, but I don't want one enough to pay for one. I just use my crappy laptop instead.

What exactly is it slow at?

I never get tired of artsy looking douchebags trying to look important all over my city's coffee shops with them, all of them on facebook or some other such travesty.

What are you doing in the coffee shop yourself? Or are you just looking through the window?

Probably on facebook on his Iphone 2G, wishing he could copy and paste.

Looking through the window or grabbing a coffee myself. Those types of people usually try to position themselves at the windows to get the most attention paid to them.

I don't have an iphone.

In a place like Starbucks I'd prefer a table by the window or the wall so fewer people walk by and bump into me. And also in case I need to plug into an outlet. I don't go to Starbucks because I don't drink coffee, but the few times I've been there it looked like the tables were very small and close together.

y HD on a netbook? a 288 pixel height divx is more than enough picture quality for me... hell that even suffices on a 22" home monitor

Handwriting recognition is still buggy and frustrating, video is too slow, I guess I'm just spoiled with notebooks that have lots of RAM, good processors, and speedy video cards. Maybe in a few years they'll be a solution I like, but not now.

Co-worker of mine got one for his wife around xmas time and it was pretty sluggish (4-5 min boot time). I havn't really sat down with one but I think I want to get one, and I dont know why. I do know that most of the ones I've seen have like a 600 vertical resolution which to me is way too small.

I also dont know why people crap on the Atom. I built a HTPC using an intel atom board and it runs great.

I bought a 17" laptop last year and let me say it is the hugest thing to carry around. I thought 9lbs, that's not too bad... wrong, it doesn't even fit in my bag... Now i'm trying to set up a server environment with my server and remote connecting with a netbook. I don't have one yet but am looking for one.

I couldn't give a shit less about HD video. I grew up with B&W TV, and about 4 channels to choose from. It's a small miracle that I can carry color video around in my pocket :^D

I love mine, I don't see myself going back to a fullsize laptop anytime soon. Typing is okay with the exception of a couple of keys (Mini 9), but I realized all I ever did with my old laptop was check email and surf the web, and it was a brick compared to this thing.

I might upgrade to a 10" display at some point but for now, it fits my needs perfectly.

I have a dell mini 9 and a dell mini 12. I never use them. They were gifts from dell to test. We found the 12 worked good for some people, but the 9 was worthless for us.

Already have a laptop, so no real use for a netbook. I did recommend to my dad that he should get one as he's looking for something to fill the role for checking e-mails and just random web stuff when he doesn't want to go down the stairs to use the desktops or use his work computer for personal business.

Never got into it. I do too much work when I use my laptop, I burn cds/dvds, and my eyes like the bigger screen.
