I used to watch DBZ a couple of years ago, but I lost all interest in it. My friend really loves it, but I can't get into it. It just seems... I don't know what the word is.

My room mate watchs it constantly, and I personally despise it. I can't really comprehend why he needs to listen to it with the sound on either, he obviously has no idea what they're saying. I asked him why once and he said the voice acting helps; I then asked him to say 3 japanese words and he couldn't even say one. This proved my point he wasn't actually ever listening to the hours and hours of anime he watched, but is just more comfortable watching the moving images with noise being thrown at him because of watching tv etc growing up.

To me most anime, at least the ones my room mate watches, all seem to have roughly the same plot. They all center around a ninja with special powers, or at least a martial artist who needs to save or protect something.

IMO its one thing to be 20 watching cartoons, but to be watching ones where you can't understand what they're saying and references are made to things only people who understand Japanese social structures and institutions would understand, not to mention the oh so diverse plots.

If he watched this much bugs bunny or roadrunner it would still seem weird to me, but more reasonable. He honestly watches more anime 2-3 days then I do TV in an entire month. I think I watch a lot less TV then most people, but it still kinda boggles my mind.

You're admitted to having willingly watched DBZ and are making a judgement?! Ew.
DBZ: I'd like some raw snails instead, plaease...
Every incarnation of Gundam: No, of course we never heard of smooth movements. No, we don't know what voice acting is. Creativity? Didn't they get rid of that a few decades ago? If we didn't give away the entire episode inside of two minutes, why would we be doing this?
Cowboy Bebop: mmmmmmm...
Outlaw Star: Almost got over the choppy animation...but not quite.
Trigun: mmmmmmm...and WTH?! Just when it starts to get serious something silly happens. And it goes between smooth and choppy animation. Again, though, the subbing...one thing that makes me like Cartoon Network--all dubbed, by God!
Ghost in the Shell: OK.
Akira: Good.
Iria: Good.
Spirited Away I need to see in theaters now...I hate subbing but it was good enough to deal with it.
Escaflowne I'm working on...subbing really gets to me, so I really need to find a good video renatl place (we have several blockbusters...nothing good in any of them at all...nothing). I need a video rental place that carries stuff like 187 and not whatever is the new release from disney (literally, the new disney stuff took up 1/5 of the shelves last time I was at the closest one to me!)

With all that, my favorite cartoon is Cowboy Bebeop, w/ Tom & Jerry at a close second :)
DBZ is just a hair above Justice League.

I use to love it! now it's just a thing of the past. If you're a kid/teenager, their great but if you are over 18, its the most boring thing to watch. I find fishing or doing anything outdoor more productive then being glued to the TV 24hrs a day. Its basically geared tower kids and cartoon for adult? I don't remember adult ever watching any cartoon, unless they are really bored.

you should see the difference between tonal context in a dubbed anime series and one that is subbed. the difference is night and day. watching anime dubbed is like watching a chinese or french movie dubbed. the sound doesn't always match the mouth movements, things get lost in translation (you can be more exact in subs), and the dubbed voice is usually different from the original voice acting. there are some good dubs though like macross plus, evangelion dub is OK.

Saying you dont like anime is like saying you dont like TV or video games, you just need to sort through the trashy ones.

Saying you do like anime says that you have the mental capacity of a six year old and are entertained easier.

You think liking anime is normal? This is a geek forum and plenty of people hate it. It's retarded and worthless, a complete waste of time. South Park, simpsons, and crank yankers are the only shows I'll watch without real folk in em.

You watch Crank Yankers and yet you have the nerve to insult the intelligence of anime watchers?

I dislike it - too kiddy for me, even with the cursing and sex and blood and whatnot - it looks too kiddy and the storyline always sucks.

I like anime, but only some. I havent really seen that many though. Thinks like DBZ shouldn't even count as anime. You need to watch things like Kenshin, or Evangelion.

Wow, that's bad. You watch Crank Yankers and think the likes of Cowboy Bebop retarded? That's like saying you watch Maury and think Larry King Live is retarded.

/me loves anime

DBZ = own, but so fuggin slow. Have you ever noticed how they're like, "I need one minute to rest" and that one minute is about 5-10 episodes? Seriously, no joking here. When Freezer blew up namek, he said it'd be five minutes. I think it was about 15 episodes that 5 minues was? sheesh. Still good though

Cowboy Bebop = own. I love it

Yuyu Hakusho = eh, okay.

Inuyasha = couldn't really get into it, but it was sorta cool

Gundam Wing = my favorite. The best series, IMO. All of them, so good.

Zoids (not the gay one with Bit and them whores, I'm talkin' with van) = so good I would get up @ 6:00am just to watch this damn show. So fuggin sweet. Though it got taken off the air and I never got to see the ending, pretty pissed off. Hopefully toonami will put it back.

:p

Tom & Jerry and Looney Toons are the same stuff, but faster and funnier. Oh, and Looney Toons has more depth in the characters (and that's saying something!)

Cowboy Bebop = own. I love it
Duh. The last episodes are hinted at the whole way through, episodes consistently have hints within them about what's up next, good characters (maybe save Ed, but then again, any girl with a long masculine name like that is bound to be crazy), and one creepy villain who was made by the hero. Lastly, what many of these guys creating these things forget about, everyone in the show has a reason for being who they are, what they are and where they are, right down to scars and limbs.

Yuyu Hakusho = eh, okay.
I loved the first 5 or 6 episodes. Right up until he became spirit detective, I thought it was done perfectly. Then it started looking like DBZ with a bit more plot.

Inuyasha = couldn't really get into it, but it was sorta cool
I like it, but can't pin down why. The characters are good (not great, but look at most shows in general), the plot is OK, and is a great example of how an epic RPG game starts out.
But being my odd self, it always annoys me how the laws of physics are disregarded totally for the sole purpose of not seeing under Kagome(sp)'s little skirt. It's like there's always tape holding it on...but eh, that's just a pet peeve :).

Gundam Wing = my favorite. The best series, IMO. All of them, so good.
I have yet to be able to watch a full episode, even if I'm doing something else...every little thing, from the animation to voice acting, to poor literal translations, etc. just grates on my nerves.

I watched it some, and it almost got there, but the characters never deepened, and having two nations w/o names immediately slaps my suspension of disbelief.
