Jersey Mikes crushes Subway. They aren't even in the same ballpark.

Cheese Steak at Subway = $7
Cheese Steak at JM's = $12

For almost twice the price it better be in a different ballpark. They're good, but not worth what they charge. Last time I went I got the big sub and it was like $15 out the door. I easily polished it off myself, was pretty tasty but could have been $5 cheaper.

Jersey Mikes is probably the second to last place I'd ever get a cheese steak (after subway). Why not go to literally any pizza joint? Will be at least twice as good for 7-9 bucks.

Also, Jersey Mikes charges $12 for one?!

I'm surprised at how many people say they like it. It really is the McDonalds of sandwich places. It has no redeeming qualities and the value isn't great considering what you're actually getting. $5 foot long are passable if there's really no alternative. But I don't go to subway unless there's no other option, pretty much the same as McDonalds. I guess people just don't know what decent food is or don't care. It's not just subway though, many more expensive places for sandwiches are just terrible too. Best ones are definitely local places.

If you take a foot long with a drink and cookies/chips the price is more or less on par with much of the not as crappy food court options. Too much bread, not enough good ingredients. If it was really good, the price would make it a good value. But it's not. And it's cheap enough to really bother seeking it out on price alone.

Spending a couple extra bucks to get something better than subway makes more sense. If that blows the budget, eating out was a stupid idea to begin with.

Its filling. In a few hours, its going to come out your butt anyway, so why spend more money on something that's going to turn to shit? Subway tastes fine and is cheap which fits the bill for lunch.

Just used that as an example, the Chipotle Cheese Steak there is the same price as their other subs. With the price difference I don't see how people even compare it to Subway. It's like saying the new Corvette Stingray's nicer than the new Mazda Miata. No shit?

Went to a Blimpie in a mall in Utah, never again. Sucked ass! I mean the meat came in a pre=package and it was just awful. Rather go to a Subway.

That's peculiar, every Blimpie I've been to slices the meat in front of you after you order your sandwich.

Craving a sub now and there is a place called Primos Hoagies based out of South Philly down the street.

$12 for a sub delivered.

Supposed to be really good...debating Chicken Parm vs one of the meatball subs (provolone and romano vs parm and romano, old world vs old fashioned).

every time ive gotten a sub from JJ its been plain crappy white bread that is no better that what I can get at 7-11

I wouldn't say they are 7-11 level (not that I have any experience with 7-11 sandwiches), but I do feel that JJ is highly overrated. I want to assume that their sourcing is better, but I hoenstly don't know if their ingredients are any better than Subway or QUiznos (which are essentially the same place; only Quizno's charges way more and creates this false assumption of quality). Such claims could always just be FUD.

Still, I put Jimmy John's slightly above Subway because they have better choices (things like sprouts, better bread, etc), but their sandwiches have always been somewhat flavorless to me.

I don't mind Subway, but I'll get the flat bread instead of the sub roll.

I really like Lenny's. They slice their meat (btw, I have no issue with precut versus slicing, it's still meat), but what I like is they use - prosciutto, provolone, and capicola. Can't get any of those at Subway.

I definitely have noticed a cheapening of Subway over the years. Skimping on meats, in particular but I think that is largely driven by the local franchise owner. Some locations fare better than others, in terms of profitability and competitive pressure. The immigrant owners seem to be the worst (e.g. Punjabis).

At one Subway location in Stockton, CA, I swear they counted out six slices of black olives for a foot long. I was like, srsly, could have some more? The girl picked out four more slices and put them on, like I was asking for truffles or something that cost $12 per lb and was out-of-season. How expensive could black olives by the gallon jar be? And then we went through the same thing with the jalapenos. I went there a half-dozen times and it was the same every time. This HAD to be coming down from the management/owner.

It's funny how the views expressed in this thread mirror those of the hamburger thread. The food in the very cheapest of fast food joints somehow isn't as good as it once was. (Hint: It was never very good.) And similar thoughts can be found in recent threads about current music.

It will never change and it's been like this since my father's day and his father's: Ask a twenty/thirty/older-something how something compares to how it was in his heyday of high school and college and it's never as good. It's always gone downhill.

TIL today, Jimmy John's employees have to sign non-compete agreements. Wonder what freshness they're secretly slicing up.

And the fact that so many of the long-lived chains HAVE cheapened and changed many things for the worse counts for.....??

Right. Like I said. Never changes. Your kid in twenty years will be whining about how Big Macs and Whoppers and Subway aren't nearly as great as they were when he was a kid. Human nature.

a foot long Subway BMT with cheese and 1 sauce has something like 1,200 calories. Don't understand the "skimp on the meat" comments. If you get double meat you're damn near pushing a full days calories in a single sandwich.

Just to be clear, probably because the kid has eaten 200 times there and KNOWS the product they used to receive. We're not talking about a situation where someone had Restaurant X a few times 17 years ago, not once since then, then goes to X and has a different experience from their 17 year old recollection. Or at least, that's not the sort of situation that I'm referring to....

Its gone downhill :/

I doubt they had pinkslime in 1980. They've probably found a way to add even more filler to the pinkslime.

1980???

What about 1960? The 1980 burgers were NOTHING like the 1960 burgers.

... and etc.

It is a perfectly serviceable sub for the price. I haven't had one in years and it was years before that one as well. I used to eat them regularly when my options were cafeteria or Subway and then again when I made barely more than minimum wage. But these days I don't find myself in either the limited option scenario or the tight funds scenario so I don't go there.

I interpret the question to mean if I'm not worried about cost and I have other options would I choose Subway because I enjoy the food and the answer to that is no. It seems like most of the positive answers like the "good value" more than the actual quality of the food.

I had Subway today. It's convenient that they have one at Home Depot now. Went to pickup some Christmas bulbs at Canadian Tire next door then picked up a sub on the way home.

Out of all fast food it's probably the healthiest choice. Mr. Sub does make good subs too though but they're kinda in an odd location so I rarely even think of going there.
