So after reading this thread I had to have a good sub. Took a detour after a commercial photoshoot gig and went to the Jersey Mike's in Whippany, NJ. Got a full size ham and cheese done the Mike's Way (lett, tom, onion, oil, vinegar, oregano, spices) plus added mayo and hot peppers.

It was amazing. Freshly thin sliced ham. Everything had the right amount of it on there - not too little or not too much. Just right. Craving satisfied. I have half home with me now to be a late night snack.

1980???

What about 1960? The 1980 burgers were NOTHING like the 1960 burgers.

... and etc.

Can't really compare 1960 to 1980, and if you did 1980 would probably be better.

E.g., In 1960 McDonald's basically just had cheeseburgers, fries and milkshakes/cola's on the menu. Things like the Big Mac and Filet-o-Fish all came later.

So, IMO, 1980 was better than 1960.

But basically I agree with your point. I'm not sure if it's me or did the regular ole cheeseburger get much smaller/worse? Can't believe that even as a kid I was happy with that.

Why vinegar & oil and _oregano_ on a ham and cheese sandwich? That's what you normally top an Italian sub with. I'd imagine that ends up tasting much like an Italian, except that it's missing most of the best ingredients of an Italian sub, like the salami, cappicola and prosciutto.

Filet-O-Fish was on the menu in 1963, Big Mac in 1968. McRib, 1981; Chicken Nuggets came in 1983

The meat changed a lot over the years.

It actually ends up tasting like a really good ham & cheese sandwich actually. I know Italians and it doesnt taste like that kind of sub.

Oil & Vinegar goes on most kind of subs, that really is not just for Italian subs. They ask you oil & vinegar for pretty much any sandwich. That's common at most delis in NJ/NY.

Usually I get spiced ham but they didn't have. But they do Mike's Way on all their sandwiches so it's really not unusual. Those ingredients work on many sandwiches, not just the Italian.

Really? Including sandwiches on sliced bread? They ask you if you want oil & vinegar on a roast beef or pastrami sandwich in the delis of New York? "Do you want oil & vinegar on your Reuben, sir?"

Not unusual for them. I'll bet Mike's must love the simplicity of finishing all the sandwiches the same way whenever they can. Beats the hell out of "a little mayo" or "heavy on the spicy mustard". A very fast-food approach. Quick, cheap, easy, no brains involved.

of course not on reubens or pastrami. they also don't ask you if you want lettuce and tomato on those either. that i just expected as understood. i didn't say every sandwich. i should say almost every sandwich made with cold cuts.

and yes they do ask you if you want o&v on a roast beef sandwich. i don't like it on roast beef, but with pretty much almost any other cold cut.

i've been to a bunch of good delis in nj. they all offer it, not just Jersey Mike's. this amazing Deli up near Cresskill, NJ that has a line out the door all weekends does the same thing. i used to order my sandwiches all like that before i ever found a Jersey Mikes as well.

lett, tom, onion, oregano, mayo and then I'd say light on the oil & vinegar. sometimes add hot peppers. i'd ask if they had a little spice mix too and if they did, said add a little of that.

if you like ham & cheese sandwiches try it. you might like it. oh i also get American cheese not provolone.

Just ate a six inch tuna sub from Subway for dinner. Damn this thread.

KT

LOL.

Actually the tuna isn't that bad for a cheap sub. I normally grab a six inch on whole wheat, with swiss and have them put on extra mayo, lettuce, tomato, and onions. For $3.75 in NYC, it's actually a steal.

I used to hate Subway in the 90s since they'd do a v-shaped cut on the top of the bread so that they wouldn't have to put much meat in it. Nowadays they slice the bread like a normal person would and put way more meat than I can remember 20 years ago, and I think it's a way better sandwich now.

Foot long BMT, pepper jack cheese, no spinach, cucumbers, or jalapenos, oil and vinegar to dress.

I love it.

That's when I liked them when they did the V cut in the bread. And the one I went to put way more meat in it than they do today.

a foot long Subway BMT with cheese and 1 sauce has something like 1,200 calories. Don't understand the "skimp on the meat" comments. If you get double meat you're damn near pushing a full days calories in a single sandwich.

yeah pretty much. We eat way more meat than we ever need, anyway. Fact is, there is far more meat, and so much cheaper, available to us in this country than there every was.

complaining about lack of meat at Subway is just, just...pathetic. And I love meat. I eat the shit out of meat. But I know we can't possibly sustain ourselves eating the astronomical amount of horrible and cheap meat that we eat.

I hope the day soon comes that we are paying ~2-3x as much for meat, and eating it like 3-4 times per week...as god intended. ():)

When I was 18 I went vegan for a little over a year. Now at 32, I can't make it a day without eating meat. I just feel like I haven't eaten until I've got some animal protein. It's really weird.

I'm ready for soylent. Just give me a nutrient paste so I don't have to think about it. :p

Subway and KFC are the only two fast foods joints i recognize as serving actual food.
Of teh two, Subway is the only one which i would actually consider eating. Because veg, mmk? and some cold cuts won't kill me.

I have this nagging suspicion there are a lot of BMI 30+ people on this board, and not in a good way.

Subway has always put enough meat into its Sandwiches. I just have them scoop the bread out and spread the sandwich over two meals.

the V-cut was horrid for sandwich construction part of it ended up being nothing but bread because of it

there needs to be an even distribution of all ingredients across the whole face so each bite has some of everything

Since I get every single veggie (except for the yellow things) they offer on my sandwiches, this is never really a problem for me. There is stuff busting out of both sides. I could, however, see this being a problem if you go more minimalist with your ingredients.

No banana peppers?! You're missing the best part!

Footlong Double Roast Beef on Wheat with cheese, all veggies and one sauce is about 900 calories. Far from a full days worth. Sure, you can make a sandwich a full days worth if you try, but a lot of the sandwiches do not equate to a full days worth of calories, even with double meat.

I get jalapenos. I like the taste of jalapenos more than the yellow things and getting both is just overkill in my opinion.

We have a little family owned Italian place we like that is in the same building as Boar's Head meat's warehouse called Cortina's. Only open 11-3, but some excellent food with a real chef running the kitchen.

OTOH sometimes I am fine with a Togo's pastrami.

or Subway, tuna on honey oat, or a veggie patty. Not the best, but cheap and OK.

OTOOH Panera bread Turkey Sierra with extra greens is a heck of a good sandwich.
