Anyone actually like Subway?

Here in California we have a sandwich place called Togo's. I tried it a couple months ago and it was actually really damn good. Nice sourdough bread and the meat was actually thick but HOLY CRAP was it expensive. I'll just go to a local place for the same price.

I only go to Subway for the $5 footlong.

This is totally wrong. Food chains are not cleaner nor do they serve safer food than other food service operations.

I believe he means "safe" as in, "you pretty much know what you are going to get."

That is the real appeal of major national chains, in any retail or restaurant business. Local doesn't always mean better, even though I prefer to try something different and possibly unique when I travel, it can and does lead to disappointment, or even disaster (like when I ate a burger made from rat in Dublin--yes, this pushed me into the BK after that. budgeting: Dublin is effing expensive. so there you go.)

yeah, Togo's is really expensive and I feel like it's pretty much the same quality ingredients as Subway. I ate there once some time ago, thought it was fair, then tried it again more recently and it wasn't very good.

one opened up near where i work in jersey city, going to try it out this week.

Potbelly's is the greatest sandwich shop chain on the surface of planet earth.

no, not in my experience. I've tried, I think, 4 different sandwiches from them over some couple of years when I find one, and there is absolutely nothing special about them.

Jersey Mikes and of course Potbelly's are way better.

Anyone ever experience Miami Subs? that was the greatest place ever for drunken late-night steak and cheese gorging.

I've eaten extensively at every chain you can think of, and a lot of the famous shops from Katz's to Greenblatts, and I'm hard pressed to think of a consistently better sandwich than Firehouse. Unfortunately they tend to be in the suburbs, so I don't get to go there very often.

Subway is McDonalds of subs. I like Jimmy Johns much more: they slice up the meat right there, their meats are of better quality, and all their veggies are fresh.

I'm surprised at how many people say they like it. It really is the McDonalds of sandwich places. It has no redeeming qualities and the value isn't great considering what you're actually getting. $5 foot long are passable if there's really no alternative. But I don't go to subway unless there's no other option, pretty much the same as McDonalds. I guess people just don't know what decent food is or don't care. It's not just subway though, many more expensive places for sandwiches are just terrible too. Best ones are definitely local places.

If you take a foot long with a drink and cookies/chips the price is more or less on par with much of the not as crappy food court options. Too much bread, not enough good ingredients. If it was really good, the price would make it a good value. But it's not. And it's cheap enough to really bother seeking it out on price alone.

Spending a couple extra bucks to get something better than subway makes more sense. If that blows the budget, eating out was a stupid idea to begin with.

Went to a Blimpie in a mall in Utah, never again. Sucked ass! I mean the meat came in a pre=package and it was just awful. Rather go to a Subway.

I liked Quiznos a lot better, but all the Quiznos in my town went belly up.

A lot are. It seemed to be ranked one of the worst franchises. The one by me closed down, in fact I think two did. But it does have a lot better sandwich than Subway.

Togo's is good. It's not THAT expensive, and they have daily specials.

Publix (from the Deli)
Firehouse
Potbelly
Subway
Jimmy Johns
Quiznos
Jersey Mike's
Milio's

In a perfect world, there would be a Publix in MN and a Firehouse right down the street. I have to get my fill of Publix when I visit family in Jacksonville. If I'm there for a week I'll have no fewer than 4-5 chicken tender subs from Publix -- they're fantastic.

The Jersey Mike's and Milio's that I've been too have been absolutely terrible to the point where I didn't finish my sandwich from either. Quiznos would probably be ranked higher if it wasn't like $12 for a large sub. I like JJ's bread but I'm not a fan of their sandwiches. Subway is meh -- I eat there sometimes because it's close to work. Potbelly and Firehouse are about on the same level -- I like them both quite a bit.

Subway is a good sandwich for cheap...the meats are a bit sub-par but for the price ok. Down here Publix subs (and local delis) are far better, but you are paying close to double in price.

Either your Subway or your Publix stores have way different pricing than here. Subway normally has a few $5 footlongs and many for around $6 while most Publix brand footlongs are $6.59. Their ultimate (turkey, roast beef and Tavern ham) and cuban are really good and they load on the veggies. I like Subway chicken bacon ranch but it's currently over $7.50.

I agree withthose who like Firehouse, but every time I have had Jimmy John's here I thought it was worse than Subway.

I used to eat subway all the time in college. Was a 2 minute walk, 5 bucks for a footlong, knew the guy and got good service. There were no other sandwich options in the area.

But really given the choice, I'd eat at just about ANY other sandwich place, chain or not, before going to subway. Just about everything in that place is pathetic, the meat portions, the veggies, the bread etc... only the cookies are good. Blimpie is far better (sliced to order), Jersey Mikes is somewhat better (bread sucks though) but really... a sub from a real Italian deli is about 1 million times better than subway.

I'll pay the extra 2 dollars to get an inch of boars head meat on a crusty Italian loaf instead of 3 slices of shiny ham on a soft falling apart subway roll.

Honestly, they are about on par with every other chain sub shop. They are decent in sauce selection though. They are a bit more pricey than Subway / Jimmy Johns.


If you are really keen on getting a cheap sandwich, the deli at a local supermarket is a thousand times better and comparable in cost in my experiences.

Subway sucks....yet most people here and in US eat it (there is a reason they are in business).

Personally I'm not the biggest fan but we do go every now and then (maybe once a month if that). Usually when we are on the road.

I can name # of great Deli places that put Subway to shame and all, unfortunately NOTHING holds a candle to home made sandwich made just the way you want!

No sandwich is better than the one I make.
