are bmw's out of warranty really that costly to own?
Independant shop and I bought the shocks/struts myself from Bavauto.com. I think the parts were around $450 delivered and the labor was like $800.

My wife's old E30 needed a new cylinder head (remanufactured actually) and that cost us $2500.

We were pretty sure the transmission was going on the E36 and that was an easy $3000 to replace, $4500 if you go to the dealership.

Yes, they do nickel and dime you to death.

that's why i'm thinking of going this path :D

BMW wins. It's an Ultimate Driving Machine.

Well, you clearly haven't done any research on the latest Subaru's. Your loss.

A used 3-series is no bargain and barely a luxury car.

Did you miss the part where Subaru people are the ones who did the research? The BMW people are just better.

No, I didn't. I guess you are just blinded by the spinning propeller bling and the compelling desire to spend money on perceived quality. That's okay. Here's hoping that you might come to your senses one day.

The M3 IS a 6-speed Manual! Thats its stock form. If you want the SMG II (SMG I was first gen), then you have to pay an extra $2,200 (thats what it was when I bought mine).

And the 540i? LOL A 540i says "I cheaped out and regret not getting a M5 or RS6!"

... I can only assume that your M3 was a CSL then?

An M5 or an RS6 would require me to have one car instead of two, and is beyond the financial capability of most people on these boards. Not to mention it has yet to be made available with anything other than a 6MT, which I'm basically incapable of driving.

No
Interior

Sorry about the pic, but if you look close you can see the shifter.

Exterior

All E46 M3's come with 6-speed manual standard, unless you want the SMG II. Do some research.

I was responding to someone quoting my inability to drive a stick by saying that my m3 would not be a stick, it would be an SMG. Sorry for the mixup, I should have worded it differently.

is there any hierachy to the SMG I and II?

meaning, does the regular 3 series have SMGII, or is SMGII only offered in the M3, and the 3 series only has SMGI as an option?

No prob. But if you were to get one, definately get the 6-speed manual! The SMG II is really lame IMHO, and many people I know who have it dislike it. I mean whats the point of owning that powerful a car if your going to get a "glorified" automatic? Its worth the time to learn manual...its much more gratifying!

My Lightning is far more powerful than an M3, and it seems to get along fine with an automatic. :p I do understand what you mean about having control of a sports car, but it's just not worth it to me.

I didn't quote anyone when I responded to you, crackhead. My response to you was as follows:

And yes, what a car says about me is pretty high in my reasoning when I go to buy. The Lightning says, I want to go fast, but I want to be different, and I'm a texan. I've concluded that the Acura says, "I cheaped out, and regret not getting a BMW 540i."

But your lightning is not made for a racetrack as the M3 is. I guess its just a matter of personal opinion, but automatics only serve to piss me off...Unless its bumper to bumper traffic, then they are great.

I live in Dallas. Like pretty much every major city I've ever been to, there are cars on the roads and highways most times of the day. The thing is, say with the SMG... The SMG performs better than the 6MT ever could, with uber quick shifts. People just buy the 6MT for the control. But you can shift the SMG! I guess I just don't get it.

I was talking to Silentzero... about my post to you. Because he called me on the M3's manual gearbox. So I had to explain my post directed to you. You need like, Forum Concepts 101.

Cars indeed say something about their drivers, but frequently not what those drivers think they do.

All too often, a BMW says, "I'm an insecure poser hoping you'll think I'm better than you" while a used M3 can positively scream, "I'm a clueless wannabe go fast God who has no idea just how far and how often I'm going to have to bend over for my white cloaked Teutonic service techniciian."

People who chose a vehicle primarily for what they think it says about them to others are amongst the lamest losers imaginable.

No, that post has nothing to do with you. This just isn't worth explaining to you. In case you haven't noticed, everyone else understands the flow of conversation.
