there is a lot of misinformation in this thread. I test drove an 04 STi and ended up buying a 97 M3. Reason....I always wanted an M3, it was an awesome color, had 38k miles, and it was $12k cheaper than the STi. Even though the STi is AWD, you still need to buy snow tires and rims. The stock tires it comes with have no grip in the snow/ice, and marginal traction in the rain.
The M3 is my daily driver.
As far as RWD cars go, the M3 is fine in the snow. I live in Utah and we had well over 100" of snow last year. There were parking lots and stuff I couldn't enter at times due to my car being low to the ground, but anything except a truck would have had a difficult time in those areas. I took my car into the snowy mountains on several occasions to ski with no issues. The car has outstanding weight balance. I wasn't even using real snow tires. I have Toyo Proxes FZ4's which are all seasons. Any car with summer tires is going to suck in the snow. Being RWD, it is easy to lose control in the snow if you don't know what you're doing or you drive like an idiot, but the same can be said of an H1...
Maintenance is a little issue. So far, I've replaced my rear shock mounts(preventative($90, 45 minutes of DIY)), one of my wheel speed sensors needs replacing, my passenger seat belt buckle needs replacing, need to perform Inspection II(spark plugs/fluid flushes), my guibo is starting to shred, and I need a new clutch(own fault) It isn't bad if you can do your own work like I've been. The dealers are getting something like $140 / hour for service now...
