The Savage 111s are surprisingly hard to find in Washington. Has anyone tried a Marlin XL7? Those look comparable.

aren't they like several thousand dollars?

I know my dad and uncle have a few weatherbys and they were around $2-3k if not more.

Most of them are, except for the Vanguard. I picked up mine for $550 w/scope, but I should've spent more on the scope.

edit: that figure included sales tax, the retail price is quite low

I never was too crazy about the .06 guns, but to each their own and I am a remington guy anyways..

I just swapped my wind netbook w/ few extras for THIS SWEETHEART HERE .

Remington 700BDL chambered in .280 with a pentax lightseeker XL 3-9x50 ...Not a mark / flaw on it ...

And then when the zombies and or the home invasion idiots come my OTHER REMINGTON will clear the way.

Remington 870 marine magnum,18.5" w/ extended mag and tac light w/ pad and a knoxx spec ops 6 position dual recoil - stock and throwing sabot slugs and centurion multi defense 2 3/4 ammo and not in pic but also have 2 x 55 round shotshell bandolier's...

For the money it is hard to beat the Savages. They are accurate, dependable and affordable. The Stevens are a nice no frills gun as well and are made by Savage. I would agree that the Simmons scope that comes with the package guns is not great but would probably get you by for a while until you could save up for a nicer one. Nice optics really are a must but they can cost more than the gun itself. I say since you are on a budget, get the package rifle with the scope and use it until you can afford a better scope.

I ended up picking up a Marlin XL7 (in 30 06) along with a Nikon Prostaff 3-9x50. I can't wait to break this thing in!

Which one shoots flatter and longer?

.30-06.

it's a significantly longer action than the .308, with significantly more powder. bullet dimensions are pretty much the same.

i dont know versus .270, but hey, at least it eliminates 1 round.

I believe the .270 is flatter shooting than the 30.06. Atleast thats what I always believed.

Another vote here for the 7mm Rem Mag! A fantastic load that will serve you well on any continent, and with almost any game. The same can be said of the .30-06 as well though. I've found myself always going back to the trusty .243 Winchester, with 80grain rounds, but then I don't hunt much anymore. Jugs, paper, and the occasional coyote are the only things I shoot at anymore.

Oldsmobaot, there is a bit of variation among those loads as obviously the mass of the projectile and amount of powder used influences downrange performance. Smaller bullet diameter generally means more fps, thus a flatter trajectory - but this also means a greater drop off in velocity and accuracy at longer distances. Of your 3 selections I would say a .270 (which is a necked down .30-06) with a lighter bullet (below 150 grains I suppose) would give you the flattest trajectory. Remember too that the rifle used will alter the ammo stats slightly - barrel length, how clean it is, how warm it is, etc. Best bet is to test fire them and find what works for you in regards to recoil and accuracy. Some guys demand as little recoil as possible and want something that's easy to shoot fast. Others prefer a 'camp stove' flying at 2500fps and maintain that the only shot that matters is the first... to each his own.

If mostly target practice is your bag, with the occasional hunting venture with family and friends - opt for a deal chambered in .270 or .308. If hunting in various states is in your future, then I would go for a .30-06 or 7mmMag in case moose, elk, or bear end up being on your list.

For the money it is hard to beat the Savages. They are accurate, dependable and affordable.

Agreed. Back in the day they weren't anything special, but that company really turned things around! I don't own any, but have handled enough of them to know they're good deals. Even this Winchester and Ruger devotee will admit that!

Nice scatter gun there bababooey! I love my 870, although it doesn't seem as cool as yours!

Rem Model Seven SS in .260Rem You can't beat those 6.5mm's for deer-sized game. The ballistics trump the .308 at longer ranges and very little recoil.

They're pretty close, and it depends a little on the round (there are a million different 30 06 loads) but generally speaking, I think you're right.

Tables for most rounds can be found here.

I beleive the 30'06 with a 165 gr boat tail bullet would claim that honor.

.06 is a good all-around rifle. I've killed numerous deer, elk, and other prey with them over the past 40 years.

Not the fanciest or trendiest of weapons, but they get the job done.

I also have a fondness for the .308.

.308 holes make airy souls.

After I bought the 30 06, my dad offered to let me use one of his 7 mags for the upcoming season. D'oh!

Ah, well, this way I don't have to worry about beating up someone else's rifle. Can resell if I discover I don't care for the rifle.

I really like the Remington 760, though I believe the modern version has been re-catalogued as the 7600. Removable box magazine, pump rather than bolt action. I prefer it for Alaska, as you're much more likely to run into something that wants to eat you while you're out hunting than you are in some other states.
