Any hunters here?

My dad has a remington pump action he bought about 3 years ago, and has gotten great results with it knocking the deer down. Just a standard one from Gander Mountain for about 500 bucks or a little less.

A savage is a fine choice for a first bolt action. I would not hesitate to hunt with one, even with my Nosler bolt action in the group of choices.

The real question is what is your budget (make sure to think about what you want to spend on glass/rings too)?

$400-500. Once I've hunted for a few seasons I think I'd be comfortable picking up a Remington Model 700, but that gets into the $700-800 territory and that's a bit much for me on a first-weapon purchase.

If I wanted to pick up a 12 gauge shotgun or a handgun I'd be more comfortable as I have real world hunting and hobby experience.

Nothing wrong with a cheap savage, just make sure you don't go super cheap on the scope (assuming you get one without sights and need a scope).

I see lots of people buy even expensive rifles only to mount a tasco or a bushnell on the thing. At least go with a lower end Nikon or Leupold. Avoid barska, BSA, Tasco, and non-Elite bushnells like the plague.

30-06 is a decent starter caliber, I dont use it though except for in my Garands, just because everone else has one. I have different tastes as far as my Deer and Elk rifles go (I prefer .243win for deer and .375 H&H for elk myself 😛 )

I've never had a problem with Tasco. Not the greatest by any means, but I wouldn't hesitate to put one a cheap rifle.

Yeah, my tasco never has let me down in 20 years. My burris for the handgun I had issues with like on the first or second time out to the range. Burris was good on warranty work though so I can't knock them completely. I don't see why anyone would need a 400+ dollar scope. As far as a hunting gun, walmart used to carry guns, not sure if they got completely out of the business or not. They had very good prices, beating the local gun shops easily.

That is because you have a 20 year old tasco - they USED to be good.

Now I wouldn't own a tasco for any reason, they are that bad. Only suitable for rimfire IMO. When a .22-250 will bust the reticle from recoil, then the scope sucks (had it happen 3 times in a row with the warranty replacements on that tasco).

That could very well be true nowadays. My last scope I bought was a cheap 8-32 power BSA I put on my 77/22 .22 magnum. Quality wise, I certainly wouldn't put it on a centerfire. I wasn't too impressed.

Hey - another great thing about Savages is the barrel nut setup. Makes swapping barrels and calibers very easy in comparison to say, a Remington 700 or Winchester 70. You mentioned bigger game down the road and asked about caliber options, so I thought I'd mention this. You could do it yourself with a few tools.

OP, if you lived close to me, I could probably make you a sweet deal on my pre-64 Remington model 70 30.06.

It was my father-in-law's before it was mine, and I know it's killed well over 30 deer and half-dozen bull elks. (many of both were my kills)

I also have a Marlin .32 lever action rifle (don't remember the model number) of about the same vintage. It's a nice little deer rifle, but not really good for anything bigger.

I'm too busted up to hunt anymore, and my son has no interest in hunting...

I can testify to the quality of those 60's era Remington rifles. Mine is a model 760 in .30-06. My buddy borrowed it once, and took down a buck at 150+ yards, uphill, open sights. The only drawback is the kick, but a good recoil pad can take that down to a reasonable level. 🙂

I didn't know they came in SS. great looking gun.

I use a Browning A-Bolt Medallion in .270 Winchester and am very pleased with it. It has enough oomph for anything I would hunt, without being so punishing that you skimp at the range when sighting in, etc. For your stated purposes, you might want to look at .270 and .280 Remington as well as the .30-06.

I sold just a #1 Tropical in 7x57 great firearm but I don't hunt anymore. Here you go

Well depending on what kind hunting ya want to do detrimes choice of weapon. If ya want distance and accuracy owith scope go long barrel . little harder to handle but more accurate longer distance. I have an old rem. mod to a 7mm cart. Very good . I haven't fired it for eons. But nice gin . 500 yards good enough for Moose. 1000 yards is pushing it on really large moose. But all round rifle . easy to use manuever and such shop for a 7mm.

great gun. .270W may be the best all around calip. for most hunters.

If you can save a little more a Ruger Model 77 is great. I have it chambered in the 30-06 and the choice of bullet weights is flexible: 150 (excellent for both flat as well as distance shooting), 165, 180, 220 to begin with.

Yeah, I'm definitely stuck on the Savage 111. Think I will take the advice on scopes to heart and buy the bare rifle, will save a little extra and buy a nice scope.

Yep last thing you want is a buck of a lifetime in front of you and your scope is fogged up.

I use a Remington Model 600 Mohawk (.308) and have never failed to drop what I hit.
I'm not saying the other calibers aren't good, I just tend to use .308 a lot.
I keep the 30-06 for the Garand and Springfield A-3 😀

I 2nd those too. I have a Winchester Model 70 .270 and a Savage 99 .308, both are great hunting rifles.
