I have no issue singling out any company, but apple is the only one pulling these numbers while their workers commit suicide.

Don't hate the player. Hate the game.

Apple is only one of dozens of companies that Foxconn caters to. The workers are dying for far less profitable companies.

Samsung had a blowout quarter in Q3. I don't see you admonishing them...

or do you think because apple is making the most profit, they should subsidize the costs of the workers for everyone else that uses the foxconn plant?

Why? Unless they start paying dividends then their profits aren't directly enriching shareholders are they?

The only time you make money on their shares is when you sell them isn't it, unlike companies that pay out a percentage of profits to shareholders.

Mind you if they don't start to use up some of that warchest they might not be able to resist demands to payout a dividend.

Huh? I recommend that you don't invest.

The Foxconn factory has over 400,000 workers. 14 of them committed suicide. That percentage is less than half the rate of the general population.

And guess what? They make a hell of a lot more than just Apple devices. Pretty much any smartphone/computer/gadget is made at a factory just like this.

I think the coolest part is how much cash they have on hand. ~94billion or so? Last time I checked Microsoft had ~86B in the bank. It will be interesting to see what they do with that money.

MS also pays a dividend and paid out $30 billion or so in a huge dividend some years back

but i like the way apple buys up manufacturing capacity to keep the commodity copiers at bay

First, they aren't Apple's workers. They are Foxconn workers. The owner of which is a billionaire. Maybe your hatred is misdirected.

Second, you are saying poor working conditions are OK for the people that make all your other stuff, just as long as the company doesn't make as much money as Apple.

Well let's hope they can keep new and refreshing innovative products coming to consumers, or there may be a decline in stock pricing within a year or two. Consumers are always, "What have you done for me lately?". Without Jobs at the helm, that may be easier said than done.

Was that before or after they got called on it?

I don't see why that matters.

Maybe you should throw out all of your other electronics too, most of which were probably manufactured for companies that aren't taking a pro active initiative like Apple.

How many third world workers commited suicide so apple could pull those numbers?

http://www.wired.com/magazine/2011/02/ff_joelinchina/all/1

foxconn has roughly 1 million workers in china, 17 suicides so far.
0.0017% suicide rate for foxconn

http://www.google.com/hostednews/af...ocId=CNG.fe11c1b55d60e484a37a458dccdd1b34.8f1

China has a national suicide rate of 22.23 per 100,000 people.
0.02223% suicide rate for China as a whole.

I'd say apple is doing a pretty good job, it seems that producing iphones actually curbs suicide by 13 folds!

This is stupid as the foxconn suicides would also be in the china as a whole rate.

And they have no where near 1mil workers. Bad facts man.

Apple hires Foxconn. They are complacent in it. I'm not saying anything about it being ok or not for other companies. I'm saying they're a company that could quite easily have hired workers that aren't exploited to the extreme, but choose not to so they could pad themselves a little more. It's pretty much the height of what's wrong with America today.

you are right about the foxconn suicides also being part of china's suicide rate, but the point is that since foxconn employs so many workers, it's the percentage of suicides that should matter, not the actual number of suicides.

and so far, that percentage is below the national average, so the media is focusing on the issue unfairly.

Can you please point out a manufacturing company with the capacity and quality of foxconn that doesn't exploit their workers like you think they do?

I am patiently awaiting your response.
