Man, everyone is leaving. The roads are jammed, gas stations are starting to dry up. No school, no work. The thing keeps turning for where I live.
I'll try and take some cool pictures.
Anyone else in the greater NOLA area?

I've *heard* that some of the NOAA folks where I work are saying that the NOGAPS model had some faulty data.Originally posted by: Falloutboy

A direct NOLA hit would kill tens of thousands of people.

Normally I would agree with you, but New Orleans isn't exactly the easiest place to evacuate. There's only one way out of town, I-10.
Lots of people there don't have cars either.
I figure it'll be another few hours before 55 and 59 are all north-only.Originally posted by: Ogg
Well they have just shut down I-10 east bound into new orleans.....They make it one way both lanes in these situations for hurricane evacuations......
I-10 Eastbound Closed at LaPlace. This is in response to Hurricane Ivan. If you need to get into New Orleans, State Police say you should take Hwy. 61.

I still don't understand why a city like NOLA exists in this day and age. It either needs to be fixed or evactuated in a permanent manner; even The Big One on the west coast won't cause the kind of damage that they're talking about if NOLA was hit.Originally posted by: Chaotic42

You're talking about hundreds of billions of dollars to do either one of those things. Moving a city of 1.2 million people or raising it up 20 feet, either would be hideously expensive and the city and state are both pretty much broke.Originally posted by: ViRGE

Well I finally made it. We got the madatory evacuation notice yesterday to leave the Fort Walton Beach area. Got the house boarded up and hit the road around midnight. Decided to go and stay with my in-laws North of Orlando. THey have some damage from Frances, but its better than sitting in a hotel room.
Not looking forward to what I might go home to.![]()
