Except so many are so proud to label themselves as "despicable" in response to them really being a few.
I'd also like to add that these Trump worshippers are like nothing I have come across before in my life. Admittedly that might speak to my limited world experience but I'm no slouch in that area either.
There's
another topic in which
I tried to touch on a point, of why this is happening to us now.
We are a tribal species that can find "others" in everything and everyone. Look at the way kids pick on each other and you'll see the beginnings of what later becomes tribal warfare and the sort of violence that has always plagued humanity. The root psychology driving this behavior is still present in us today. We are still the monsters the history books warned us about.
And so, it is a natural human phenomenon present the world over... but Western Society has prided itself in doing its damnedest to overcome it. We have aligned ourselves with values of acceptance and protecting people. So why do we back slide?
Economics. The United States is falling from the grace of its "golden era" where labor had incredible value and enriched Americans far and wide. Today, by comparison, our people are pulling away from each other as they fight over scraps that get smaller every year. The decline in labor is a huge economic punch in the gut that drives out the niceties of a moral society.
Polarization. Our two party system makes it difficult to feel like we can effect change. As the economic noose tightens around our necks we keep trying and keep failing to change the system. Three branches of government, 60+ vote requirements, long drawn out campaigns.... the trap of voting for the lesser of two evils. People grow desperate and lose hope. Hope in the future, in themselves, and in each other. Not only does it feel like a dog eat dog world... now "the man" is keeping us down. They are stopping us from "fixing" what's hurting us. They are the enemy... the source of all illness. Final solutions galore.
Madness. A recent entry that pours fuel on an already burning fire. I really think our primitive brains cannot cope with the existence of such partisan and polarizing news and media 24/7. Social media in particular means "the enemy" is out there... and our psychology insists that while the threat is fresh... our defense mechanisms are raging. Walls up, let no one in. If they aren't us then they are "other". Hyper partisanship is rising, but I'm afraid the United States is in a prime position to learn what a severe and acute onset looks like. I think we all feel that something has changed in the world, where it has become difficult for people to calm down long enough to see the humanity in each other.
Trump gained a following by being outcast. A desperate people angry at our leaders saw someone who scapegoated trade deals and immigrants. Hungry for jobs, he spoke of jobs. So Trump was used as "the enemy of my enemy" regardless of his flaws. I was a little tempted by that offer, to give the GOP the finger. Instead I listened to reason, but I have some idea of where Trump voters were coming from. I also think human nature has them trapped by ego into defending a poor decision. They cannot help but raise walls and block out reason. And since the party never ends, their denial has turned to sheer madness.
I know someone who thinks we have to "protect" jobs at ALL costs. Deport immigrants, rip up trade deals, return to an Agrarian Society. All so people can "feel good" by working. I wish I could get through to this person... but they are caught up on cable news and social media, far too concerned with fighting the good fight with no time to experience any sense of introspection. Tribalism is working its magic to turn them into "others" and vise versa. In such environments Humans are built to fight, no to listen.
The road back from this situation will not be easy. First we have to steal a key motivator, the economy. Make them a new(er) deal.
