Yes. Better alternative than cashless bail, and rich people get a taste of what jail really is like. By the way, if bail did not exist let's say in Georgia, Trump would be behind bars already.
So you’re ok with spending 18.6 billion dollars to lock up 92000 people for an average of 6 months? (I am probably being generous with the 6 months)

Current Rikers island budget is less than $1B a year.

Better than paying 25+ billion a year on migrants!

$ 25, 192, 300, 000 .00 to be exact!

Remember these are the official numbers: $406 per migrant PER DAY x 170,000 migrants in NYC x 365 days a year (well 366 this year but I didn't count that extra day.

And lets say your property tax is $8000 per year. The City would need to tax 3.15 million homes $8000 a year in property tax just to break even. That doesn't even cover cost of police, fire, paramedics, social services, schools, libraries!

Epic mismanagement by Adams and he's right.. that this issue will destroy NYC.. except he's the one doing it!

Take a look around you in NYC. 48% of the population is foreign born. That means they could come here and afford to feed, house themselves. You see them everywhere.. running food carts, working in restaurants, driving cabs, gas stations. And they're good people.

But these new migrants - these are a bunch of freeloaders and that's why a super liberal New York by 80% thinks they're a problem!

They're not even refugees FFS. Can you even name which conflict they're running from?

Real refugees are thankful to be given a new start and have to pay back their benefits (like the ones from Afghanistan, Syria, Ukraine).. but these supposed refugees can't even respect our laws of not shoplifting.

We're clearly being taken for a ride and its stupidity on steroids to try and defend this.

Blame US law that prohibits them from working when they get here.

You can be a refugee for reasons other than an outright war.

No thank you but common sense is a lost skill these days.

When 80% of your own base turns against you on 1 issue.. maybe we need to readjust our thinking rather than thinking MAGA kool-aid!

Edit: The only other issue I've seen this much change on in is the LGBT gay marriage issue.. it used to be 25% supported it, now it's at 85%. Ofcourse Im a beneficiary of that but using the same metric.. maybe the hold over 15% need to re-assess and re-adjust their thinking? Just a thought!

So you're beating up on people who come here for opportunity and are legally allowed in the country while their cases are decided but do not immediately have the legal right to work for not working? If they work illegally and get busted they can be sent back for that reason alone.

Remember that discussion we had about empathy? You're sorely lacking it. Fight for change in the system, not shitting on people.

You don't get it do you?

We're fighting over peas and carrots and junk food when we should be fighting over steak (winning elections and installing a liberal majority on the SCOTUS).

But peas (migrants) are so important to you, you wanna call me names or just not vote dem at all..

Look at the other side.. they didn't care about Trump, they stuck together and they got their 6-3 majority which will last 40 years unless we stick together till Alito and Thomas croak and hopefully we have a senate that allows us to put our guys there.

So like I said before.. you wanna fight over steak or you wanna belittle me instead?

Beating up on defenseless people is not a value I'm willing to embrace for power. I'm also not willing to embrace your just plain devoid of facts arguments for shitting on those same people. I guess some of us have to be able to look at ourselves in the mirror at the end of the day and believe that humanity can be better.

I wish you luck but we're in a battle for America's soul and we can't win that with our hands tied behind our back on the basis of morality over migrants. Have to keep our eye on the ball!

And the SCOTUS evil is far bigger crime against humanity imo!

Someone mentioned I've undergone a metamorphosis from liberal to trumper.. no but I've gone from being an idealist dem to a realistic dem thanks to RBG's stupdity and *faith* in humanity! We saw what Mitch McConnel did..

I don't think you're a Trumper, but I'm disappointed you've decided to be ok with Muslim deaths and shitting on immigrants. I'm sure there is lots we agree on still but on those points we'll disagree.

for the record, OP said he'd vote for Trump if the former President delivered single payer healthcare and LGBT rights:

Noble policy goals, but this thread's entire premise of "I'm scared that NYS will flip red, so we need to deport all the undocumented migrants stat" is pretty deplorable thinking. And esp. coming from a first or second generation Asian immigrant?

You do realize the city has released its own estimates of the cost and it’s a tiny fraction of this, right? And remember, that estimate was Adams deliberately inflating the cost so the real cost is substantially less than that most likely.

If you want to hate immigrants in the city that owes its power and prestige to immigrants go ahead, but at least do it with numbers somewhat approaching reality.

It’s also totally delusional thinking. Kansas is closer to flipping blue than NYS is to flipping red.

Looks like an 'I hate immigrants because Republicans do and use that hate to win elections so Democrats should hate them more to keep the bigot vote' sort of thing maybe. Anyway his hate is sad but probably not a conscious option he chose and can therefore easily drop. He will probably need psychiatric help to do that. Not intended as a put down, just the way I see it. If a person is asleep he or she is a machine acting on a program. A lot of immigrants have known real struggle in their lives and have grown up facing heavy challenges and when they get to America life is easy as pie for them. They would have died with American victim mentality where they came from.

As the parent of a gay child & another that identifies trans I'm just as disgusted at the animus towards that Community.

And this is the source of my disappoint with indus. They expect empathy and understanding for those communities yet are openly willing to throw other groups under the bus in the name of political expediency.

oufff, this is nice :))))))

Idiots... full stop

The patriarch of a right-wing Canadian family of eight had just about enough of the gay people existing in his country. “We didn't feel safe for our children there in the future anymore. There's a lot of left-wing ideology, LGBTQ, trans, just a lot of things that we don't agree with that they teach there now, and we wanted to get away from that for our children.”

Yeah, if there’s one place that’s just not safe for kids, it’s Canada. Russia would be sooo much safer.
So mom and dad sold everything they had to move to sunny Russia to raise their kids in “orthodox” values. They also gladly took donations on their social media platform from fellow right-wingers so they could live in Putin’s wonderland. They did all of this just three weeks ago, and Russian officials assured them that they would work with them to get them established, and even help them get a farm. Long story short, they lived happily ever after.
Except they didn’t.
First off, the Russian bank where they moved their funds immediately froze their assets. The amount of money seemed suspicious, as I guess it would since most Russians outside of Putin’s circle are dirt poor. As a result, the family doesn’t have money to live on, and those nice Russian officials disappeared.
Since no one in the family speaks Russian they’ve had a bear of a time trying to argue for their money since Russia doesn’t require any bank, or any business, to hire English translators. In the meantime, they discovered that Russia is a pretty damn miserable place to be right now.
A Russian reporter interviewed the mom—likely for a story on how the corrupt, liberal West was forcing Christians to flee to Mother Russia to the warm embrace of Vladimir Putin. But the mom forgot where she was and instead spoke her mind:
"I'm very disappointed in this country at this point. I'm ready to jump on a plane and get out of here. We've hit the first snag where you have to engage logic in this country and it's very, very frustrating."
