I already mentioned to you in the other thread that I ran Xvid test on the Return of the King DVd I did the divx run on....It was 18min longer at 2.574ghz...

We are using the auoGK 1.96 version and I see no ultra quality setting.....It is whatever quality it takes to get it to fit on a 2cd 1400mb rip....That was the premise of the test...reality is anything higher quality in this is pointless and should just dvdsrhink......

I think I am using 1.03 xvid as well...

I will check into it but I dont think I will rerun it....I have already taken the ROTK off of my PC waiting for the P-D user (aka chiken-sh^t) to actually run some of these test that I have linked at 3 major sites....Either no one is buying the heaters yet in leiu of winter or they perform poorly....probably a little of both...

Also I see nothing in proigram files under the Xvid folder to set anything for this 1.03 (verified) version...

OK I did and turbo is not checked...so that means do the test I did for comparison...It is set to Ultra High as well....Since turbo was not checked and I have never messed with it then by default turbo is not chekced in version 1.03....

i just d/led 1.96, but i don't remember from where :eek:

i noticed that the automatic Chosen Resolution was 480x208, that happened to me too so i manually changed it to 528x224 so i could compare with the rest of the X2 users

you might need an ac3 filter to play the audio, i use http://www.videolan.org so i don't have to worry about installing codecs

you guys leave it on ac3 6ch audio also, right?

We were all running the same version so we could be sure that the results were compatible. Thanks for posting here guys, we've been waiting a long time for some Pentium-D guys to run the test. Looks like it gave you a resolution of 480x208 skytech, I had to manualy change it to get 528x224 so I could compare it to the others.

This time it more faster. I change the resolution to 528 pixels, not subtitle, and output the file to another drive.

Nice rig and o/c! What kind of temps do you get? I'm going to do this test @ stock, but compare DDR vs DDRII.

I had to manually change it to 528, too. I wonder why it was higher for the X2 users?

I think my HDD is a bottleneck since during encoding it was only doing 85%-90% of both cores during encoding.

My temp is pretty high:

Idle = 46-49c, load = 65-68c running two prim95 for 12hr it not throttle

I don't know my room temp, the weather outside is 82f.

I had to manualy change it and I'm an X2 user.

Not to bad overall I supose, my X2@2.618 is 15% faster than the 820@ 3.5ghz, but 95% more expensive, athough that doesn't factor in the cost of that scythe ninja. The 3800+ X2 is about 45% more expensive but seems to OC to the same level.

Thats a pretty decent OC you got on air, while still keeping it under throttling temps, but it's awfuly darn close.

Well at least thats consistant, we were getting the same results, about 80-90% usage. I tried using my raid-0 raptors to see if it really was the hard drive as the bottleneck, but it didn't change the CPU usage at all. I don't think mark ever managed to get it running on his SCSI raid array, that would realy eliminate the hard drives as the bottleneck.

====================================================

yeah... i was messing with my ddr2 settings, and there seems to be some discrepancies.

-------------------------------------Everest(read)--CrystalMark(mem)--Sandra05
ddr2-667 (set) no flex 4-4-4-12 --- 4194 ---------- 7882 ------------- 4112/4112
ddr2-automatic no flex 4-4-4-12 -- 5852 ---------- 8429 ------------- 4932/4939
ddr2-667 (set) flex on 4-4-4-12 --- 4893 ---------- 6714 ------------- 4430/4419
ddr2-automatic flex on 4-4-4-12 -- 4854 --------- 6893 ------------- 4442/4432

Flex is a mem setting that supposedlly "automatically increases performance". riiight...
It's weird when i forced ddrii 667 the performance went lower.
The encoding above i ended using the highest i could get (ddr2-auto-no flex) and that's the score i got (all w/ no o/cing)

So a 2.8ghz w/ DDR1 @ tight timings beats out the DDR2 @ high fsb by 2 min.
However, going from 2.8ghz to 3.15ghz only allowed a decrease of 2 min...

edit: whao that's horrible scaling... a 12% increase in clock rate (2.8ghz -> 3.15ghz) warranted a 2.3% increase in speed :(

I have 1h 14m 15 seconds at 2.475ghz, and 1h 10m 6s at 2.618ghz, so I had a 6.1% increase with 5.7% increase in clock speed, but I changed memory twice in that time period, so that is probably part of it as well.

So is the verdict that an overclocked Pentium D isn't too bad for encoding? Assuming you can get a good deal on it and keep it from throttling?

Running on a SCSI array would certainly eliminate the I/O bottlenecking and provide more accurate results.

Well it doesn't look too bad if you can get an overclock and decent temps. If you already have a 3.6 or 3.8 single core with hyperthreading, you won't get as much of a boost. If you have a non hyperthreaded P4, or single core A64 or Pentium-M, then the pentium-d looks like a cost effective upgrade for video encoding, but I would never trade my X2 for one. I didn't really see an improvement from my raid-0 raptors, but maybe a scsi array would have a more drastic effect..

Yeah SATA RAID isn't going to cut it. SCSI (RAID or not) will eliminate the I/O bottleneck far more effectively.

Forcing 2T timings, keeping everything else the same I get about a 7.5% decrease in performance.

Duvie could you run at 2T to see if the extra cache of the 4400+ decreases the impact of 2T?
