- I would check the previous GPU, just to make sure it still works, after you tried to feed it 12V - and you may have messed the connector when you forced the wrong cable in it.
- Are you running that poor computer in a plastic foam packing ?
- Are you seriously contemplating running that hot and hungry 105W CPU on a board with zero heatsinks?
- Remember to enable XMP.

And 4+2 VRM?

And with 16GB of RAM?

Yeah but the dang cheap PSU (only $26) doesn't have ANY CPU connector. I thought the CPU would just run in ECO mode if the connector power was missing but I guess no :(

USB keyboard is getting power though.
Why would anyone power anything with a $26 power supply.
If your PSU was on and EPS 12V plugged into the graphics card I think you are quite lucky it isn't dead.
I agree that's a real possibility with a $26 power supply. A good power supply would sense the short and refuse to power on.

I actually don't know that for sure. Took out that card and plugged in the slot powered one.

Don't both connectors use +12V DC?

Why can't those idiot Germans just print CPU on the connector like most PSU manufacturers do???
Both CPU (EPS) and GPU use 12v, but the position in the plug is reversed.

It was a free, possibly degraded CPU. It doesn't deserve much more (well, it does deserve eco mode).

Wasn't aware of the CPU issue. Eco mode might be a good choice though. As for a $26 power supply, there is no excuse for that. It reminds me how in decades past they'd sell cases with PSU's in them and they were always the absolute worst.

Also you thought a $26 PSU would have 12V for a GPU but nothing for a CPU when every CPU since the P4 required a a 4 pin (or more)? Am I sure I'm not talking to the gorilla that is igor's IT guy at work? :D

Now I see the PSU is supposed to have a fan sound level of only 17db, which would explain its desirability.

80+ Bronze that happens to be 85% efficient lol. Could be a simple typo. Still if you value your components I wouldn't touch it.

My IT gorilla doesn't even know how to build a PC. He considers himself above it and buys only pre-built.

It was early in the morning and all I wanted was to snuggle in bed but I stayed awake out of sheer curiosity just to see the thing boot. My estimate was it would take 20 minutes tops. But as always, lots of things gave me a splitting headache, including:

First time installing an AM4 CPU.

Installing the GPU first and then finding out access to the single NVMe slot was blocked. ASROCK release lever is crap so took a few tries to get it loose.

RAM notches didn't seem like they were aligned perfectly. Not sure if it was a problem with this mobo's slots or if that's just how DDR4 slots are (seen the last one in 2021 so hazy memory).

Had to struggle with clipping the fan onto the heatsink. Those thin metallic strips aren't easy to figure out I swear! The manual just said, clip the fan on without any further instructions. Must have taken me close to 10 minutes to get that aha! moment.

The CPU connector on every other PSU I have used clearly says CPU. This one didn't and looked suspiciously similar to the PCIe connector.

Since I thought this must be for the GPU, my next thought was that low power CPUs (under 125W) don't require a CPU connector and that's why the PSU manufacturer didn't include it.

I'm very forgetful when it comes to electrical power requirements of CPUs. There's already a huge connector for the mobo so my brain figured that it could provide enough power for the CPU on its own, at least to work in ECO mode.

It had great reviews on Amazon. It was either this or Thermaltake 650W which was about $13 more. But I already have two other PSUs lying around (low powered ones), just in hard to reach places. I figured if I was going to buy one more, then the financial damage be as little as possible. Of course, the damage will be magnitudes higher if I lose the poor GPU. Reverse polarity death I wouldn't wish on any GPU.

Ventoy didn't like this mobo (this is the second time this week after a Dynabook laptop was also rejected by Ventoy as being totally unworthy). Was too lazy to create a bootable USB so went looking in my USB stash. Found an 8GB one (the one that would survive being run over by a car) from 2008. Installed that Windows and it's Win10 20H2. Running so smooth. Feels so smooth and best of all, I don't smell hot metal like I do when pushing the 12700K. Hmm...I guess the 12700K is soon going to get kicked out of its cozy home.

The CPU seems to be fine so far. No crashes. Currently doing an Upscayle run. The CPU fan seems to be ramping up and down. Dunno what that's about. Tomorrow hopefully I turn up the heat with RAM as high as it can go.

Are you in Eco or not? What kind of RAM do you have? AM4 seems to top at at 3600 MT/s, 3733 if you are lucky. But I'm sure you a;ready knew that :p .

I'm optimistic it has a stable point. Especially if you play around with PBO.

Yup. Bump up the max boost by 200 and use CO and go -10 to start and see how low you can go. That's what all the cool kids have been doing.

TBH, it seems great as-is. I don't feel like messing with PBO.

That weird fan ramping up and down in Upscayle? Apparently, it's rapidly oscillating between 0.52, 1.07, 2.44, 3.77 and 4.44 GHz. Those speeds are also fluctuating a bit. Weird.

How do I confirm it's in Eco mode without installing Ryzen Master? BIOS is at defaults. Didn't touch anything. Performance so far seems to suggest it's working at peak capacity.

I have G.Skill DDR4-4100C19 (aka DAPUNISHER RAM :p)

Starts happening in Rapydmark too after a while so not just limited to one application.

Got a CB 2024 score of 527. CB R23 somehow got corrupted on my USB (maybe due to exFAT) and there is no official place to download it from (didn't think it would be this hard in 2025 to find a benchmark download. What is the world coming to???). Finally found it at cinebench.net which seems to be offering up archive.org links.

Virus scan done and score is 9567. Half of what it should be. Probably due to insufficient cooling (using a graphene pad)? The continuous downclocking must also be playing a part. Still, not horrible for a free CPU. Still crash free.
