I also uninstalled Ryzen Master and reflashed my board. Ryzen Master has been buggy and frustrating to work for me in general. And it doesn't clean up settings unless I change the values explicitly to something else, leaving traces of prior values around. It's like what DrMrLordX says. In the BIOS I now strictly use the board native stuff and AMD CBS settings only, without touching "AMD Overclocking."

Hi guys!
I've been reading this thread since the Zen2 fever started and think this is the best place to ask a related question.
I'm going to upgrade to a 3700X next month and I would like to let the computer transcode over night (Handbrake). Right now, I haven't included in the upgrade a better cooler.
So my question is: do you guys think the boxed cooler is enough to keep it at safe temperatures and allow me to sleep in an adjacent room with the doors open?
My (planned) case cooling looks like this: intake: 2x140mm front + 1x 120mm bottom; exhaust: 1x140mm top + 1x120mm back. All PWM.

@Chicken76

I think it's one of those things you'd have to try and see if it'll work out for you in the end. Your cases airflow sounds adequate to keep your internal temps within reason. Depending on the case I'd imagine it would somewhat dampen the sound of the stock cooler. Without trying it I'd say you'd never know in the end. If it was me I'd probably at least try it out before purchasing a alternative solution.

I'd imagine a constant sound profile from your PC during the dead of night would be best. Whichever way you decide to go it might be best to just use a fixed fan speed for your cpu cooler as they're nothing more annoying than a fan ramping up and down constantly with varying loads. I'm also thinking that depending on where your pc is placed or even aimed at in the other room could effect the sound in your bedroom.

I tried the 3600's stock cooler and wound up quickly upgrading it to a Arctic Freezer eSports DUO as it couldn't hang during prolonged all core loads. When I decided to upgrade to the 3700x I just went with the Arctic cooler from the getgo as I already had it so I have no idea of how the temps and sound profile would be on a 3700x.

I'm currently using the 3700x's stock cooler on another build that I'm slowly piecing together. Currently it's just sitting on top of the MB box and during similar loads to your intended use case scenario it keeps the 3600 in check, but does ramp up to around 3k rpm with my motherboards default fan profile. It's audible on top of the box, but not really to bad. I'd imagine it would be much quieter in a case.

BEFORE I hit the buy button, every time I have seen them, (and its always been at Amazon) I tell you all first, then buy.

I can't help it if you all are slow on the trigger (of course I am retired, so I spend all day looking at stuff)

And I have plenty to upgrade all my threadrippers, all 8 of them.

One of these days, you're going to have to upload a video tour of your house.

I have a feeling it will be like an old radio bit about the Kennedy Compound

Dude touring Marks place:
Over here is a server and over there is a server
This room is the server room, walking over here is a server and this room obviously has a server in it and back here is er the server, next to us is a server....

*replace server for “the bar” regarding the radio bit

Single, divorced for 32 years. Look at the pics, no woman would allow this.

I wonder if it would be possible to connect all those fans to some sort of fan controller and synch all the lighting in every machine?

I’ll chip in to get you all the same vendors fans.

Yup, if I spend $23,000 I save 100$ a month.

Yea right.....20 years from now I will be ahead, maybe, if the panels need no maintenance. Oh, and if I am still alive.

It’s all about the SREC solar credits. Assuming you qualify for them it totally makes solar affordable.
I thought exactly like you regarding solar, system cost was similar too.
SREC energy credits, tax rebates and energy savings will likely have the system pay for itself in 8 years.

Just a thought, in every room you can keep a KVM switch with a single big monitor and Keyboard and mouse, you can get rid of a lot of duplicate monitors and have space for more HW.
Then you can just build a nice deep shelf with good spacing and run all the machines from a single desk. This way you can avoid tripping on something while doing stuffs around the machines.
You can sell off some older parts, or give them away. Looks like there is potential for more stuff :)

Thank you Kenmitch. So in your experience the stock cooler is OK for normal everyday use, but one can't expect to not hear it in the dead of night in prolonged use with the CPU at 100%.

What motherboard do you use for this kind of workload? Have you checked the heatsinks over the VRMs? How hot do they get? I ordered an Asrock B450 PRO4. I figured the CPU is a 65W part so I don't need an expensive motherboard (would have gone for an MSI mobo if they were in stock where I live).

And another question: what coolers do you guys think are a worthwhile upgrade over the stock one, that will also not ruin my finances?

You could try the 3700x's stock cooler out and see. I'd imagine the noise profile would be less offensive being enclosed in a case. Being in another room you might not really be able to hear it at all?

The only air cooler I've tried is the Arctic Freezer 34 eSports DUO which is a $40 cooler on Amazon.

https://www.amazon.com/ARCTIC-Freezer-eSports-DUO-Configuration/dp/B07MJGNJB3

https://www.arctic.ac/us_en/freezer-34-esports-duo.html

When I picked up my 3700x I decided to look for a review of the stock cooler it came with to see how it performed and watched the following video. I didn't know it had the Arctic cooler included in the review until I watched it.

VRM temp wise my Asus Crosshair VI Hero/3600 combo along with my MSI x570 Gaming Plus/3700x look to have no issues. Both MB's have pretty big heatsinks on them that look to work well. I glance at the temps shown for them in hwinfo64 and have come to the conclusion that it's not a issue.

There's a ECO mode option in Ryzen Master that drops the TDP of the 65w offerings down to around 45w I believe it is. I played around with it on my 3600. It basically doesn't effect the single core boosts, but only limits the all core load boost speed. It might be a option that'll work for you during your overnight encoding sessions.

I haven't tried the ECO mode option on my 3700x yet to see it's effect on all core loads over a prolonged time span. I could most likely try it out and see tonight if you like.

Hah I've seen at least one woman with a house this messy. She was a welder.

@Kenmitch

I am not surprised that the VRMs on your C6H are holding up fine. They are basically overkill for a 3600. Due to the general clockspeed restrictions on Matisse (no 4.6 all-core OCs as standard, boo!), current draw has never gotten to the level I feared it would even with the 3900x.

@amrnuke

I'll add to Mark's feedback by saying that, with really heavy AVX2 workloads, you are going to want to tune your voltage and clockspeed very carefully. Personally I can get much better performance out of my 3900x in workloads like PrimeGrid using a static OC instead of relying on boost. The workload VirtuaLarry wanted me to try gave me an all-core clockspeed of 3660 MHz @ stock (a side-effect of my LLC settings, I think). With some tuning, I had 4150 MHz @ 1.175v working (1.2v actual; again, thanks to LLC). You're probably going to be limited by cooling more than anything else. X370, X470, X570 . . . it probably won't matter. If you want to do dGPU crunching then consider Radeon VII if you can find one. Especially if the workload is fp64!

So my ordeal with the new Ryzen 3K is still not over.
My R9 3900X will be delivered in the second week of September, two months from the time I placed my order. High chance it will get delayed again.

I got an Athlon 200GE to checkout the board while I wait for the R9 but after it arrived I discovered it does not work on X570
In the meanwhile I discovered the Seasonic PSU is not playing nice with the Cable Mod cables, super tight and when I powered up the system the PSU is shutting itself off.
Turns out the Seasonic PSU is faulty. I will RMA the Seasonic PSU
I also ordered an Athlon 3400G and I am using it with my X570 Pro.
I got a new CoolerMaster PSU and things are working now with the 3400G.

I updated the BIOS of the X570 Pro and overclocked the 3400G to 4100 MHz, strangely it feels a lot snappier than my 1700X except during compilation.
I also switched a lot of fans in between, to all PWM and did waste some money doing that too :(

Now I know everything works,
My H100i, 5700XT THICII, SSDs, RAM, X570 Aorus Pro etc

Another 10 days to wait for the real deal, the 3900X to arrive.

Question:
For the 3900X and X570 Aorus Pro, do I need to always also plug in the additional 4 Pin EPS besides the 8 pin EPS ?

The X570 Aorus Pro chipset fan is really loud for me, and it gets covered fully by the Graphics card, wont this impact the heat and noise of the Chipset.
