Just bought more parts in preparation. Already had an EVGA 2080 via clearance at Microcenter and a Seasonic 650w psu. Now I've got a Fractal Design R6 and a Dark Rock Pro 4 on the way. Motherboard choice (when we actually get details) is going to take a while, as well as making a final decision on 3600x/3700x/3800x.

Yes, waiting for *all* the details is the hardest part now, I suppose AMD is going to dominate the E3 news too, lol.

Indeed. I know some have already purchased DDR4-4400 RAM. But do we know what the ideal RAM speed is? The idea IF multiplier? Will it be as RAM speed-dependent as with Zen and Zen+?

Yeah, I’m tempted to buy some Samsung b die memory before it disappears however I’m not sure if that is the right thing to do or if it’s worth the $100 premium it carries for 32GB
I just don’t know, paying $100 extra for a couple percent may not be worth it.

Going to have to wait on benchmarks, but as it stands now planning to drop a 3900x into my 370x tachi if compatibility and speed look alright for it.

Micron e-die is putting up good numbers on hwbot. Will be interesting to see how it fares with zen2.

In the same boat with X370. my initial thought was 3700X but do I really want to spend the money on a CPU with the same core/thread count just because it's 7nm? if the benches don't show a big enough step up from the 1700 I might not bother; the 3900X is at the $500 price point and may not even work with my board so it's all up in the air right now. It wouldn't be the end of the world if I had to wait another couple years and just upgrade everything.

I will try to make a 3700x mildly oced work (just to match 3800x all core turbo) on a asrock ab350 gaming itx.

Vrms on that board indeed can get heaty. But for that i will try to make my on vrm heatsink from salvaged high end vrm motherboard's heatsinks

This will be the second time in my life I will build a Amd system. Right now looking at

Asus x570 mob(not sure which yet either Strix or Prime)
3900x or 3800x still trying to decide but leaning towards 3900x
NH-U12S
Im either going to use the Corsair Air 540 i have sitting around or take my 8700k equipment out and use the Corsair 780t case(put the 8700k in the Air 540)
I have 2 8 gig sticks of corsair DDr4 3200 sitting around.

Any thoughts/tips welcome. I have used Asus boards for a long time. How has Gigabyte boards been for Amd these past couple of years?

@phillyman36

If you're an Asus fan, it may be that the best X470 board out there for 3900x is the Crosshair VII Hero. Those who want to save some money and don't care much about PCIe 4.0 may do better with that than a lot of the X570 boards which may be very expensive. Gigabyte is going to be selling a $599 X570 board. Ridiculous.

Yeah im not paying 600 bucks lol. Im not really an overclocker so at most maybe $300-$350 at most for the motherboard.

At max load, the chip will try to keep 3.6 on all cores and 65w total power. 3800x is going to be 3.9 all core max load in 105w. So, if you do not want to OC, get the 3800x.
But you can just turn on PBO without any manual tinkering, no?

Started reading this thread last night. If I read this right and the AMD MBs are $300 plus and the lesser expensive 3700x ($329) thats pretty steep to me.

Seeing Newegg's sale on the 8700K was above $329 today, I'm thinking that price is great for the 3700X, but we'll definitely need to see the full catalog of boards. I'd certainly prefer one in the $150-250 range that doesn't have as full of a feature set for my modest needs, but I suppose I might have to wait for the 550 series.

Still unsure if I want the 3600X or 3600 vanilla. Right now I've got a 1600 vanilla in my machine. Definitely will pick up a new board, but will keep my existing PSU, memory, and storage. Likely looking into a new graphics card and monitor at the same time, maybe even a new case if I feel like going crazy. Got an old mid tower Lian Li that is probably in serious need of updating.

Once the reviews drop and I get a good idea of how overclocking looks, I'll probably be able to decide which chip I want to go for. Curious if having the full 32MB cache will make the 6 core chips slightly faster in some applications than the 8 core chips at the same clock speeds.

Wait until they are released. There will likely be a few MB's in the 140 to 160 range.

Not sure if you saw this, (does have CC), Robert says more Zen2 is coming at E3; these boards are ready for a 16c / 32t cpu, BUT, I'm guessing the 3900X is going to be clock king, as, it has two less cores per chiplet.

However, every other Zen 2 CPU has 1 less chiplet per package. This means that it draws a bit less than half the power for the same clock speed. The 3900X MAY clock higher due to binning when overclocking, or the 3800x and below chips may trounce it. We'll have to wait for the reviews to find out.

I've been sitting on an 4970k system for the past few years......... I'll be switching back to AMD 3900x for the next build. Last AMD build was an Athlon 64 system.

Have purchased:-

64GB PC3200 Ballistic Sport LT
Noctua DH-15 Cooler (although I read that the 3800x will ship with a cooler)
Fractal Design R6 case
2x 1TB PM961 NVMe sticks (These were on sale for $150 each - too good to pass up)
FSP Hydro PTM 750W 80 Plus Platinum

Will need to choose an X570 board - looking for at least 3x NVME slots and 8 Sata ports. May pick up a 2TB+ additional NVME drive down the road.

Primary use is software development; more cores help with compilation and particularly interested in the 2 x CCX configuration of 3900x to ensure that multi-threading is optimized for this type of processor topology. I'm anticipating that chiplets will be the way forward and software will need to be optimized for this (I'm a little concerned with Windows scheduler since I'm not sure if there is a way to force threads to run on a single CCX chiplet - which would be advantageous for some multi-threading. A believe Linux may be better on this front?)

Just a technical correction: Those aren't CCXes, they are CCDs. Each CCD contains 2 CCXes. Also, it shouldn't matter which CCD runs the threads. All have equal access to cache and IO, so latency is equal. On Threadripper it was only an issue because you had a ton of crosstalk going on. However, the L3 cache is mirrored on each CCD (chiplet), so AMD actually simplified the design in that regard.

I came across this today for anyone interested:
https://www.guru3d.com/news-story/msi-announces-x570-motherboards-godlikeacecreation.html
https://www.kitguru.net/components/...si-unleashes-full-range-of-x570-motherboards/

If I read everything correctly, it looks like several of MSI's initial launch boards will have "Zero Frozr Technology" feature on them that stops the chipset fan if temps are low enough. I checked MSI's site, and each of these motherboards below all showed this:

22.jpg

-MEG X570 GODLIKE
-MEG X570 ACE
-PRESTIGE X570 CREATION
-MPG X570 GAMING PRO CARBON WIFI
-MPG X570 GAMING EDGE WIFI
-MPG X570 GAMING PLUS

@UsandThem

That'll be a plus for people not pushing the Southbridge hard. Hope their VRM layouts and UEFI are up to snuff.

Me too.

It really looks like I will be going MSI for the first time in a very LONG time. My case has great airflow, so imagine the chipset fan will stay off most of the time.

I know that little fan isn't the end of the world, but I really prefer to not have one at all (or have it stop spinning when not absolutely necessary).

What are most of you doing as far as ram? Going for 2 sticks or 4 sticks as far as populating the memory slots? Do you all think 16 gigs is ok or would 32 gigs be better? Only videos i do is once in a blue moon take a movie and use convert dvd x to make a dvd out of it. Or sometimes i use handbrake to reduce a movie size.(not everyday)

300+ is too much..Looks like cheapest will be at 220usd/euro.Anyone who dont need new 12core can buy B450 with good VRM like MSI tomahawk/carbon and they will handle 8cores even with OC.
