AMD launches Ryzen Mobile 7 2700U & 5 2500U with Vega Graphics

It looks like HP Envy x360 is just a really bad design. Both Intel and AMD versions tested by laptop mag. Intel version has marginally better battery life but well below other notebooks in the same category

Based on this review even TR nuanced their position and are currently awaiting models from other vendors for more data points.
Laptop Magazine observed just under six hours of battery life with the Intel Core i5-8250U (five hours and 49 minutes), while the AMD-powered unit lasted just five hours and 11 minutes. Both results are lower than the figures the outfit observed from competing models, suggesting that immature firmware and drivers may share some of the blame for the below-average runtime between appointments with the wall outlet.
Ultimately, these results suggest that evaluating the battery life of mobile machines powered by AMD's Raven Ridge Ryzens is going to take more than a sample size of one. Thankfully, AMD counts other builders like Acer, Dell, and Lenovo among its manufacturing partners. Stay tuned for more information in the future.
 
I wasn't expecting AMD on QC's keynote at all.

Meh, Company that doesn't have LTE modems works with company that does have LTE modems.

To support that vision, Intel is making its current and future modems compatible with eSIMs, so future laptops can connect to LTE networks without physical SIM-card trays.

It sounds like they were waiting for the eSIM standard before going LTE on the PCs.
 

Amazing how Zen blows it away in the couple of games they test, but then 3DMark makes it look like it's not behind by much. This is why I dislike synthetic benchmarks. I'm not saying 3DMark falls into that, as I have not used it in well over a decade. This is why a battery of benchmarks is required to get a good picture of a chips performance.
 


Not only the model with the AMD R5 2500U is faster both in CPU and iGPU but it also 100$ cheaper and both at 15W TDP with almost identical Battery life. Intel is in a bad position with no product to compete against Ryzen APUs in laptops up to 800-1000$ price point.

Regurgitating the manufacturer TDP and not checking the actual configured power should already raise doubt on Laptop Mag comparison. Additionally, AMD already revealed HP Envy x360 with Raven Ridge is configured 25 W.

On 2017-12-07 12:47 UTC and HP United States store, Envy x360 with AMD Ryzen 5 2500U 8 GB RAM is 750 USD and one with Intel Core i5-8250U 12 GB RAM is 760 USD. Skip the RAM upgrade (60 USD for a bigger module, lol HP) and select the NVIDIA GeForce MX150 one and you have the superior gaming (if you actually care about laptop gaming, you would choose a different laptop with GeForce GTX 1050 instead) competitor for 800 USD.

Yet it used less power (and is more efficient also according to notebookcheck"). Also do we know the cTDP the intel chip is running at?
 
Often it is set at 44W for 28s, the time it take to get decent Cinebench scores...

That's not cTDP. That's short duration Turbo.

The fact that the above data suggests 34W power maximum and but having to get down to 15W suggest the short duration Turbo is set at 34W and TDP is nominal at 15W. Otherwise, the field under "Value" would be higher than 15W.

Ice Storm is more of a Smartphone/Tablet benchmark and is lot less demanding than others like 3DMark 11/Fire Strike/Time Spy. I also think the Intel GPUs have mobile specific enhancements to better compete with the Smartphone chips because the same uarch is used on Goldmont cores.
