When I worked for a mobo manufacturer in 1997/1998, Intel was already well known for doing this.
As you know, the motherboard market is extremely competitive. Profit margins are only a few dollars on a board. If you were a "good boy", you'd be on Intel's MVP list, and you'd get better pricing on chipsets. If you were a bad boy and used VIA chipsets or supported AMD chips, you'd mysteriously be notified of "shortages" on crucial chipsets or your pricing would go up, destroying your profit margin.
Intel is a VERY dirty company when it comes to business.

Yeah seriously, if a person or company is BREAKING THE LAW, who gives a **** about "timing" or "card playing". Antitrust card in desperation? Listen buddy, if you break the law, you should get punished, they've been saying this for years but now have enough sources and proof to back it up. You don't just keep something like this silent, what kind of criminal are you?

Ideal situation: AMD wins the case, various companies like Dell, Gateway, Best Buy carry both products on a fairly equal basis. Better competition = better performance, better price, happier consumers. Otherwise you get giants who sit on technology like Intel.

OMG... you guys bashing AMD. Are you THAT FVCKING STUPID???
First off, AMD products right now are SUPERIOR in every way shape and form to anything Intel is offering. Have you SEEN the stability tests of the new dual core processors in head to head comparisons??? Intel's dual core product can barely make it through a day without crashing over a DOZEN TIMES which server stress load reaches NORMAL operating capacity. Compared to the AMD dual cores in the same tests which do NOT crash or reboot. Yah.. Intel has a more stable product.
As for anyone stupid enough to think AMD products run "hotter" and draw more power. QFT. Go look at any SFF (small form factor) enthusiast and ask them which is better for heat. Heat generation is critical when designing a high powered, small form factor, gaming lan rig. This is because you are typicaly sticking a big mofo video card which produces a ton of heat during long gaming sessions along with the processor AND you have very little room to mount cooling solutions in a small box. AMD Mobile procesors now draw LESS power and produce less heat then their Intel counter parts. If you are building a portable gaming rig, you do not go with Intel unless you are dumb and like your PC crashing all the time due to heat issues.
Yes there was a SMALL time frame Intel's propoganda claims of AMD cpus producing more heat which could cause stability problems were found. When was this? This was during the race to get a 1GHz CPU first. AMD pushed a bit to hard to win and sacrificed heat issues for performance. For winning the race, Intel makes all these claims and forces the market to brow beat consumers into thinking AMD products are shoddy. I was working at Circuit City at the time when this was happening and I was SPECIFICALLY TOLD by my management to tell customers that when I was asked what the differences between AMD and Intel were. This was when I was using an AMD chip myself. Go T-bird!
Intel at one point had a MUCH more superior product then all the competition combined. Which is how they established themselves and got their rep. Of course, this was done almost a DECADE ago. Yes, I used Intel when they were king. I had a P66, p100, p133, and later a celerron 333 overclocked to 500. After that they were no longer had the superior product by a large margin. They were certainly not the best bang for the buck anymore either.
Okay. computer history aside, I'll answer WHY AMD has filed this suit. It's because Intel HAS BEEN ENGAGING IN ILLEGAL AND CRIMINAL ACTIVITIES. Why file now instead of earlier? Because Intel was good enough notonly to bribe, strong arm, and screw over the market, they could do it to the legal system as well. It wasn't until a precedent had been set in Japan and Europe that AMD thought they even had a chance to bring this crap to light in America. They almost tried to fix the market when Microsoft was getting suppose to be anal raped by the judicul system for doing these tactics, especially during the browser war. What happened? Microshaft pulls through with only a slap on the wrist when they deserved much more legal retaliation then what they got for CRIMINAL activities. I'm not talking stuff of lawsuits, I'm talking they should have had CEO's and other management get JAIL TIME. It didn't happen when it should have. That discouraged AMD and made them hold back their claims of similar and criminal business practices done by Intel.
Seriously, even though I have relatives working for Intel in major ways (I do feel sorry for them) I hope Intel gets their collective a$$es handed to them. I hope some major head honchoes see the world behind bars for a time frame.

Even people like Pabster, who will benefit from this even if they still buy Intel products, complain.... How misguided can you be? If you prefer Intel, the more power to you, because guess what, if AMD wins this, Intel parts would be cheaper too due to better competition, that's what capitalism is all about. Monopolies hurt us all. How can the Pabsters of the world not want cheaper Intel parts?

I'm guessing they waited this long because they finally have a product that is gonna dominate Intel for quite awhile. I'm sure when they goto trial there will be alot of cpu to cpu performance testimonies and that's just good publicity for AMD thats even better than an AD in the superbowl.

when i build my own rig - it's AMD, when i buy computers, they feed me with Intel processors. i dont hate or love either, but as you can see Intel does have some kind of monopoly going on with OEM manufacturers (read Dell, IBM, oem servers etc)

Because you have no idea how business laws work. Usually business execs are not punished for making corporate decisions that are found to be illegal in court. Nowhere in the MS trial was there ever a possibility that Bill Gates was going to see jailtime. The system doesn't work that way.
Pathetic. I'm sure that's the right way to run a business- if your competitor does something illegal, you should break the law, too. Stupid. The strong can win playing by the rules. The weak must cheat to win.
