All Florida Counties that used the butterly ballot should re-vote

I can see your point but they can stand there all day if they want, there is no need to feel rushed. BTW, my Dad is 74 and he can use the remote fine at my house. On a side note my Son will be 19 months tomorrow and he can turn on the TV , among other neat things.

No matter what happens in Florida, this election should come down to a national run off between Bush and Gore. Nader and the rest should be left off the new ballot since they didn't get 5%. With all of the doubts in the votes both in Florida and other states, we need a re-vote. Some may say this will take too long to organize, but I think it would be faster that waiting for the Lawyers and Judges to sort out our current mess.

and one more thing. Why is it when something goes wrong it's always someone elses fault? I am sick in frick n tired of the pass the buck game. You burn your crotch with coffee, it's McDonalds fault, you can't follow the arrow, it's the person that made up the ballots fault.

This is a STATE matter. It will not go to Federal Court. The civil rights claims by the black leaders may go to Federal Court and will be the subject of oversight by the Federal Election Commission, I believe. But the sufficiency of the ballot is a State question. MSNBC had a lawyer on talking about this very issue last night.

I just went outside again with my dogs and the police chopper immediately came over and covered me with their light. Good grief. My dogs are going nuts. What a mess. Hope they catch the guys.

Easy, if I accidently voted for the wrong person because I was confused (luckily our state used fill in the oval forms) and I was told I couldn't fix my vote. I would most definitly sue (or do whatever was needed) to change my vote in a state with numbers so close!

Does anyone know if they have absentee ballots in Fla? I mean if they have those then why don't they vote with those , that way then they would have at least a few weeks to figure it out.

Jugernot, little kids (ankle biters) can do some amazing things. He knows just which key opens th car door and which one starts the car. He also loves to Vacuum, he has a hard time backing up though, he will usually just run into the wall and then just sit there till I turn him around.

Something else. Palm Beach County is very savvy politically and very well connected. If anyone can get a re-vote ordered, those people can. Lots of money and lots of Democratic Party connections. I'm not saying that sort of thing is right, but that's the way it is.

About 6000 absentee ballots last I heard. 55-60% will go to Bush. Lots of military people down here also. Could be another week to 10 days before we know those results.

Ok, there ya go, if everyone just went and used the absentee ballot there would be no excuse to why you voted for the wrong person. All the old folks could just take the ballot down to the country club and ask someone to help them fill it out between their turns on the shuffle board court.

CNN is reporting 30,000 absentee ballots were sent out this year. However, in '96 only about 2500 absentee ballots were received. About 55% were for Dole in '96. I would not be surprised if 60% were for Bush in this election.

Meanwhile, Rep. Wexler has alleged that 19,000 Palm Beach County voters ballots were invalidated for voting for two candidates by double punching. Certainly more evidence of mass confusion. Also, the reports are widespread that election workers could not tell voters which hole to punch when they were asked for help. If the poll workers didn't know how to vote, why should we hold the voters to a higher standard?

This sounds like a big mess caused by the stupidity of an election system guaranteed to produce errors and induce fraud. I hope this is a wake-up call to our State legislators to put some money in modern computerized voting equipment.

This whole thing was run by Democrats in Palm Beach County. Start to finish. The election is run by a local elected official ( Democrat ). Not by the state.

chess9 ,you know who they have working our polls. You got it, a bunch of old folks who are just doing something to keep busy. But the problem is that if the elderly are the ones with trouble and the people runing the polling place are elderly folks.Then there is nothing but mass confusion.

Then it looks like they might need a few "in the know" people on hand for just such emergencies.

Perhaps it would be more fair to throw out all the ballots from the precincts that had the questionable ballots.... Its funny to me that this questionable ballot was reportedly in an area of very affluent people...generally considered well educated... yet they were highly confused where to punch the holes. I think they just regret voting for a loser and want another chance. And in most polling places if you arent sure how to mark it, they will show you..and I cant imagine any elderly person who doesnt have enough brass to speakup when they want to know something.

What is wrong with this country. Things don't go the way we want ...we bring in the lawyers. Hell, they should be lined up and shot (most, anyway).
They make the laws in a manner that seems increasingly adept at keeping them in control and power. They have control by whetting the appetites of folk who think they are due every type of handout in the world, or by scaring the ones who are actually are due something (such as SS).
I don't know how long it will take for people to wake up. We are in danger of this REPUBLIC (not a democracy) going down the drain ..the rest of the way.
Hell, we have all the Columbine stuff, corruption in the White House ...and on and on, and people still want GOVERMENT to relieve them of the responsibility of .....being responsible.

There's another way to look at this issue:

Palm Beach County has been using this butterfly ballot layout for quite some time (don't recall exactly how long, many elections stretched over several years, at least; I've been here since '85).

Anyone who has voted in recent Palm Beach County elections should have the practical experience they need to utilize this ballot format without problem (Palm Beach County has a population of ~one Million. For the sake of this argument, I'm assuming that at least 40% are eligible to vote: 400,000 people.)

If 19,000 out of 400,000 people can't figure out how to use the ballot, they could be incompetent, or they could be new to the area and are inexperienced with the ballot, or they have been here for awhile and they haven't been voting in previous elections.

If they haven't voted in previous elections which used this same ballot format, then they have voluntarily robbed themselves of experience using these ballots in smaller, less critical elections where making a voting blunder is of considerably less consequence.

Sorry, but your arguments are very weak for a variety of reasons. Most people vote, at most, every 2 years. Hardly enough repetition to become accustomed to the practice. Furthermore, many young people, including first time voters, have complained about the ballot. And, we aren't talking about 19,000 people only. We are talking about a lot of additional people who think they voted for Buchanan and whose vote wasn't disallowed by the Board of Elections. I'm sure you understand that the Jews would vote for Arafat before they'd vote for Buchanan, so many of them are rightfully p*ssed off.

This antiquated election process is the cause of these problems. If nothing else, maybe we can get some computerized elections going in this bassackward State. (Said with affection like the carpetbagger I am. )

Many people are complaining that the poll workers didn't know which hole to punch for Gore and which for Buchanan. If they were confused, how were the voters to do it right? I guarantee if you designed a voting system, this current system would be the last thing you'd come up with. We need to use our computer expertise in this country to reform our voting system. It's a major embarrassment. Every technically savvy person on this board must be shaking his head at this stupidity. We are talking about a simple data base program, maybe with a couple of servers for each county. Good grief. Too dumb.

I think Gore should be the winner. He won the popular vote. I know this means nothing, but it is relevant. Second, he won Florida...had those voters not been mislead, this would be over right now.
As for a revote, I think that is a good idea. And I don't see anything wrong with it. If people change their vote, they are doing it for a reason.
The final decision comes down to Florida anyway...so let's let them choose!

Screw letting Florida chose. If they re-vote the whole country gets to re-vote. You can't allow people to see the current outcome and then rush off to vote while they know the stats. We need to start all over and make it fair to both parties.
