My opinion is that this lawsuit was planned all along from before the kid even took his "invention" to the school. It was their plan to have him get arrested and then sue for big bucks. In retrospect, it really is obvious. This kid's family are not good people.

If you went back and read anything I wrote about this subject, you'd know that very early on I was blaming zero-tolerance. Why? Because it creates reactions like this. I saw it personally with a friend of mine in HS. Gun in the car, no ammo, no intent, nothing. Expulsion of a good kid.

I do believe that this was 100% the intent of the father. They tried to get a response from the school the prior time with the sister but failed. The response was normal for the times. Any kid would have gotten it.

There are two issues with that take. First, was the policy zero tolerance of clocks? If not, there was still (poor) human judgment involved. Someone made a choice to call this clock a hoax bomb instead of a clock. Several someones there supported that poor judgment, and the ensuing overreaction. Now, they're paying the piper with taxpayer dollars.

Second, if this is the consequence of zero tolerance, your rage is misdirected. Instead of screeching about the kid, and how his supporters should be deported, it seems you should be raging against the stupid zero tolerance policy that may cost taxpayers millions of dollars. Yet somehow you neglected to mention it at all until now (in this thread).

That's truly unfortunate, but it's an apples to oranges comparison. In your friend's case, it was real gun. In this case, it was not a real bomb, or even a real hoax bomb. It was a clock.

That said, I do agree zero tolerance polices are stupid. Authorities should have latitude to use good judgment and apply common sense.

Everything looks more obvious in hindsight. It's easy to look at his clock and say it looked like a bomb after a bunch of other people have said that, but maybe it wasn't so obvious to the kid or his family at the time.

I really don't like judging people for malicious intent without any real hard evidence showing they deliberately planned anything. Not when it's so easy to make mistakes even if they seem strange and dumb to other people.
