Very nice, massive upgrade there. You would benefit from a newer CPU or a bigger monitor as well, those will really bottleneck that card.

Well my happiness was short lived. I gamed several hours last night and used the pc for work this morning. I could not get the Gigabyte Control Center software to work so I updated the firmware (not bios) from version 1 to 1.1. and it said it was successfully done and the last step was to shut down. After that the PC will not boot at all. The keyboard lights don’t come on or anything. I think it’s dead. Going to reach out to support.

edit: gigabyte told me over the phone there is nothing I can do and to consider it DOA and return. Newegg accepted the replacement so I’ll mail it back. Fingers crossed it comes on with the old card.

2nd edit: somehow that update killed the entire pc. I can’t boot even without a gpu using the integrated graphics. Bios error code on the mobo flashes between 3 and 15 is all I get. I am having trouble identifying what those codes mean.

Sometimes, it's best not to push your luck. Maybe the 4090 is fine, after all.

Check it in a spare PC or friend's old PC which they need an excuse to throw away :p

- Don't forget to go to twitter and rally up a lynch mob against Gigabyte/Nvidia and repeat this story for the next 20 years about how NV firmware/drivers suck :p

In all seriousness through Its a massive pain in the butt when stuff like this happens and its even more concerning that your whole system seems to be down at this point.

The Machine Spirit in that rig might have just gotten old, and this is how it tells you its time for a system refresh.

I think it's Gigabyte's own fan/RGB controller on the card that needed the firmware update.

I've always hated Gigabyte coz their products seem to find a way to screw with my head. And I always end up buying them coz they tend to be cheap. Vicious cycle I broke out of only recently.

It was a firmware to the RGB controller on the card. I think it there are really three possibilities of what happened.
  • The slight increase in power draw over the few hours I used it caused something to fail in the power supply or motherboard and it’s nearly coincidental that the particular power cycle that occurred during that firmware update happened.
  • The slight jostling of components in the during the swap caused the failure, but in a delayed fashion they coincided ultimately with that reboot.
  • That firmware triggered an unusual condition on the card that caused a transient power spike or something.
I suspect the really only serviceable part for now would be a cheap power supply to get the 1080 up and going possibility. I want to upgrade maybe Feb 14th, but it will be a long month with no pc.
I found the list of error codes for the motherboard and 15 is very early in the boot process and signals the North Bridge is initializing which is even prior to memory initialization which explains why there is no display from iGPU or lights for caps lock.

Wow that sucks. If the bios fails, you can still booting the PC with the other bios or the IGP. But it sounds like the problem was that PSU.

The system is old but there is no reason why the card shouldn't work. It will be bottlenecked and run slower, but it's still a huge upgrade.

I’m going to try and get a $60 power supply from Best Buy after work to test it. It will run the 1080 at least until I replace the computer. I looked at the manual again and tried to boot from bios 2 without success.

edit: obtained, but it’s not even bronze 😬

2nd edit: apparently the pc is actually dead, the new power supply did not allow it to boot. Same diagnostic code on either bios.

I guess I am working through the stages of grief.
  1. Denial: no it’s fine. I’ll just reboot it or adjust cabling until it comes up.
  2. Anger: Why won’t this darn thing boot?
  3. Bargaining: I’ll buy a new power supply and RMA the card, it will be ok!
  4. Depression: I can’t even pay my bills because my passwords are on a database on my PC and I have gamed every night for the last 10 years and now I can’t.
  5. Acceptance: not there yet

That's really bad. Hope you can just copy the database to some other PC (maybe a laptop?) and pay your bills.

Maybe that behemoth caused physical damage to that poor old mobo considering how heavy it is. Was the top if the card touching the case?

Considering an RX 580 destroyed my Z77 mobo's PCIe lanes, I think the problem could be the Z77 chipset itself. Maybe it can't handle certain cards under certain conditions.

If he has the money for a 4090, he should be able to upgrade his system. Which should be done anyway for a 4090.

Even just a AM4/5600 or AM4/5800X3D will pair very well and won't be that costly.

BTW, that old motherboard probably wasn't designed for these heavy cards. I'd advise to support the GPU even with modern motherboards with strengthened PCIe slots, but with older motherboards with that, you are taking a substantial risk that the PCIe slot will get destroyed.
