define independent then?

you should've said "that's not true at all, ever wonder where it got the name "formosa"? always my ass."
either word makes the statement false (independant or always), so i don't see why i should have said that.

Taiwan has always been independent. End of discussion.

Well, PRC in its current form has NEVER owned Taiwan. After WWII it was "Liberated" and "given" to ROC. It has been more Independent longer than PRC. The former leadership in ROC shot itself in the foot by insisting on a one China policy, it worked until the world sided with PRC.
Taiwan should be an Independent and a seperate state. PRC should try to get Mongolia back first, they have more legitimite claim to that than Taiwan.
I bet you didn't know the president of Taiwan was just recently in the USA. China used to get mad at USA for even allowing a "former" leader of ROC to visit USA. I guess they got over it.
He was in USA as a tourist. He didn't have any political status when visiting. No US officials could meet with him.
I agree that Taiwan is still part of the nationalist and that China never "owned" Taiwan. If that's the case it only means the war is not over and China could invade Taiwan to close the chapter of all this dispute. I just hope Taiwan doesn't declare indep or I'm pretty sure war will begin.
Oh, and no.. I don't think the US will defend Taiwan and go on an all out war with China. US already told Taiwan that it doesn't want them to declare independence, but to mantain the status quo.

Taiwan is as independent as China. People in Taiwan even elect their own leaders.
LOL...only a handful of countries recognize Taiwan instead of China. No UN representation. and they compete by the name of what?...Taipei in the olympics...oh and they cannot even use the kuomintang flag. Yeah...taiwan is as independent as china. The only way to determine who is the "real" China is a war to close the chapter. Taiwan would be destroyed regardless of anything.

I don't think so.
All NASA has to do is dust off the plans for the Saturn V or install some extra fuel tanks in the space shuttle's payload bay.
In any event I am sure that NASA could dig up one or two people that remember how we did it before.
Actually, the majority of them have died. The U.S. is incapable of getting to the moon at this point, and to gear things back up to the way they were would give the Chinese more than enough time to catch up.

Unlimited amounts of cash make difficult things easier to achieve.![]()
Edit: Of course we could just wear some t-shirts with "Been there, done that" stenciled on to their landing party>![]()

Too bad NASA doesn't have that cash you're dreaming of.

Last time I checked, they have their own currency, they elect their own leaders, they have their own army, even freedom of speech (without being crushed by a tank)... that's very "independant" in my book.

I wouldn't look it things that way. I'd say they just had more important priorities. Like running over defenseless students for example. Some things just take priority.

Ignorance is bliss, I suppose. I begin to see why people from other countries get so annoyed with U.S. citizens, who insist that, "Well, with good ol' American know how, we can do anything!" despite having no knowledge of the subject at hand other than what they are spoon-fed by the media, and generally not having the brains needed to do independent research into the subject. Believe what you wish, but I suspect the Chinese will have a lunar colony up and running before the people of the U.S. quit watching reality television, get off their fat arses, and get back to the moon to stand up the American flag that was knocked into the dust when the recovery vehicle lifted off.

you should re-read the original post. he said "always independant". there were clearly not always independant. i don't see a problem here.

i m personally a taiwanese... and i was suppose to feel happy for china since they are the third nation sending their astronaut to the outer space....
for some reasons.. .i think its pathetic..... cause the US sent someone to Moon on 1969, and China sent the first guy to orbit the earth 18 times and return to the earth immediately after lkike 20 something hours....
in my opinion, it did not symbolize anything except the fact that chinese technology is more than 35-55 years behind the US technnology~~~~
Am i doing the calculation right? or i should not look at this event that way?!?!?!

yep yep.. thanx for those valuable comments.. however.. i was just wondering if Chinese government can work with NASA about the mission to Mars... instead of sending one man to orbit the earth... hehe.. its much significant that way...
just a thought...

Taiwan is independent in practice, but not independent officially, and probably never will get the official recognition from anybody, because nobody wants to fvck up their relations with China.
U.S. dont want taiwan to declare independence, that would mean war, which U.S. should help out by obligations, but would not in practice because that would cost way too much, in terms of monetary values and lives.
but U.S. doesnt really want China stomping their foot in Taiwan either, that would mean war too. it is in the best interest of U.S. to keep a status quo on things.
so the current situation works relatively well for both sides plus for the U.S. unless one side does something suicidal like Taiwan decalring independence or China invading Taiwan.
