I wouldn't look it things that way. I'd say they just had more important priorities. Like running over defenseless students for example. Some things just take priority.

And fighting SARS....

Or is that Japan

Hey, I want to see the USA doing it, but failing that, at least somebody is putting effort into manned space travel.

In the grand scheme of things, we're all on the same side... all the more power to them...

The US went to the moon already a long time ago. Sending someone to the moon again won't be very climactic. Mars on the otherhand takes 2 years to travel to at it's closest point to earth. That would take an insane amount of fuel and technology to achieve in the name of science, much of it negated after we sent a couple rovers there, and a return MARs trip is scheduled sometime early next year.

It symbolizes the fact that china is a superpower on the horizon. They have the most rapidly expanding population as well as the most rapidly expanding economy. Yes their technology lags behind the US, however they are on their way.

I wouldnt be so sure on the technology side of things.

My chinese friend Jason brought back an automatic poopa-scoopa robot, and its a nifty little gadget.

You put it on the grass in your garden / while walking pet whatever, and you aim it at the poop. Once it sense's it it scoops it up!!! He showed me with some nutella spread, as we didnt happen to have fresh dogsh1t lying around, and i dont have a dog. Cool stuff :D

They have to start somewhere, even if they are 30-35 or whatever years behind the US. The US is the leading technological innovator in the world by far.

This is a good achievement for them, but it's nothing compared to the the soviets and the us in the 60s when you think of what's available today.

just a thought...

I wouldn't trust the Chinese gov't to take out my trash let alone trust them with current NASA technology. The only reason I liked that China shot a guy into orbit is the faint hope I have that it will reinvigorate the U.S. Space Program. Personally, I still consider China an enemy of the U.S.

I think pretty much anyone with any awareness of international events considers China an enemy. God knows how close we came to WW3 over Taiwan 2 years ago...

Taiwanese or not. What China did was great and I'm proud for being Asian (Vietnamese). It's not like they (Non-Asian) can tell the different bettween a Vietnamese from a Chinese. Ignorance is Bliss.

China would be fantastic country with unlimited possibilities, if it wasn't run by the Chinese government of course. I like China, but the government has them going down the same road as the USSR, at least ideologically. Just wait until they are evenly matched with the US, that should be interesting.
