That would be the smell of burning phenolic resin. Then toss in the wastebasket ignoring the fact there is mercury in those tubes.

Electrolytics - particularly the bad ones - cannot tolerate the high temperature and high frequencies even though the cheap drivers are rather low frequency. Good lamps are around - you just have to pay for them. ;)

I do have some GE ones. And I don't toss them in the trash. I take them to hazmat collection centres or Ikea. Not sure I trust Walmart enough for them to handle these properly.

Thanks for reminding me I have about 10 tubes to take in. My local landfill only accepts them on Tues and Thurs.

You should call it air burst mercury dispersion system and sell it to the military.

Or use them as shanks. Stab and twist. If the tiny shards don't get him, the mercury will.

There's not much mercury in one compared to say a T87F thermostat! Load that much into a hollow pointed 12 ga slug and you've got something there! ;)

Now if Kevin in Home Alone put CFLs in front of the window instead of Christmas balls...

You can also try microwaving but I recommend watching these videos here first before making that decision.

However, universities aren't in the business of suppressing innovation and progress, that's Big Oil's job, so will usually be happy to license the technology in exchange for a suitable fee, or even sell the patent, if the price is right.

Fixed that for you. This will disappear soon enough, just like every other promising technology that we've heard about over the past 30 years.

:)

Don't worry, they'll come out later this year... along with those super-efficient cost effective solar cells I keep hearing about every few months. :|

Use the new battery with the new zero power IC and you could have cell phones that could go a decade without power in standby mode.
http://www.thinkdigit.com/CPUs...umption-soon_3209.html
Off means off and electronic circuits are about to learn that the hard way! Too long have electronics drawn current even while the device claims to be off.

A new innovation in electronic circuit and IC design by Rohm Co Ltd, Japan, has yielded mechanisms which allow ICs to truly consume no energy when inactive, and not only than, come back from standby immediately! Such ICs could be entirely off when no signal is present yet immediately start operating when a signal is present.

You sure you are not being monitored by homeland security?

a friend of mine works on nanowires and i am always giving her a hard time about how nano is completely useless. i may have to finally take back that claim :( :p

i'm curious just how scalable the process is. academics frequently claim things are either cheap and scalable ;)

After all these years wonder if these are into production, or if the oil industry now holds the patent and we'll never hear of it again.
