That would be the smell of burning phenolic resin. Then toss in the wastebasket ignoring the fact there is mercury in those tubes.
Electrolytics - particularly the bad ones - cannot tolerate the high temperature and high frequencies even though the cheap drivers are rather low frequency. Good lamps are around - you just have to pay for them.
