Democrats should consider running Abby Zwerner for office using gun safety as her issue. Her case plus kids being shot in school where the Republicans do nothing could be a powerful platform.

She could be the Lucy McBath of VA. Look it up :)

Expected. She should also be suing the parents to send a message for gun owner who don't properly lock up their guns. I don't know why the parents haven't been criminally charged yet.

News article says they bought clear backpacks for all the students.
Is it really that simple?
Can we prevent all future school shootings simply by making students use clear backpacks?
or is it horse shit wishful thinking??

No, it’s not that simple. If it were, then all the other times clear backpacks were mandated would have stopped this. This has frequently been a “thing to do” after a school shooting over last couple decades.

Instead, the mandate seems to last one school year, then the parents won’t buy the useless, more expensive yet fragile (the clear plastic degrades much faster than fabric backpacks…discolors, stiffens, tears much easier) things that have to be replaced each school year, if not sooner.

This doesn’t address the privacy issues for the majority. Do you really want to see who is using what menstruation product?

But, yeah, for a nonsense, feel-good but utterly useless gesture to a gun problem is what you seek, then clear plastic backpacks are the answer. Would dent the bulletproof backpack market, tho, so there’s that.

Clear backpacks are just another stupid non working solution that the gun nutters want to pretend will solve the problem, when we have decades of evidence from every other developed country as to what the actual solution is.

Took long enough IMO.

'A grand jury sitting in Newport News charged the boy’s 25-year-old mother with felony child neglect and a misdemeanor charge of endangering a child by reckless storage of a firearm, Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn said in a news release.'

I still say some of the school admin needs to be culpable as well, as the issue was attempted to be addressed several times the day of the shooting, and was ignored. It could have been prevented at the school.

I WANT to believe this will act as a deterrent, but the kind of angry assholes who constantly scream about "MUH RIGHTS!" will not change their attitude or habits. They'll leave guns laying around the house, loaded, unlocked, and this will happen again. In fact I bet 5 dollars this happens one more time before June 30th or July 1st, and also becomes a big media fiasco that is forgotten before Christmas.

If you guys are bored there's a really excellent episode of Homicide that deals with this shit, and it was made in 1994 or whatever. White people in rich neighborhood complain about blacks one neighborhood over. Some father buys a gun, loads it, leaves it in a kitchen drawer, his 6 year old gets it, shoots it straight into the air, bullet travels, kills a white person on the street near the black neighborhood, people make the wrong assumption, there's a minor race war, eventually the truth is revealed and the guy is arrested but not before making the cops question society and their role in the world.
Its pretty good, actually.

Not good enough. Charges are only a misdemeanor. She needs to be charged with a felony. Absent that the teacher should sue that family into the poor house. That's the only way a lesson can be learned without serious prison time.

I had heard the one living victim of Rittenhouse was trying to sue him and his family and the guy who gave him the rifle. I dont know what happened with that.

Felony child neglect was one of the charges placed against the mother. That count?

The firearms storage was just a misdemeanor. That law needs to be upgraded.

If she doesn't do serious jail time teacher should still sue. That will teach more people on gun storage. I remember the mother of the Aurora shooter knowing her son had mental problems allow him to get her guns.
