In the consumer realm, WinXP is licensed the same way as Vista. OEM WinXP licenses are "married" to your system's motherboard. Retail WinXP isn't. For people who don't want their license associated with a particular computer, the retail licenses have been available since Win98 days.
Bah, I switch the PC I run my XP OEM on often without a single problem or "call us" notification. Although, it is good to note that I do completely switch and the other PC no longer has that copy of Windows on it.

One thing I have noticed is Vista has turned a lot of once nice people on this forum into just plain nasty .
Which is sad 🙁
Vista made no one nasty... people who bash it for no reason made people annoyed.

Still haven't had anyone tell me in person that they liked Vista at all. Two more Vista to XP conversions this past week. I guess Vista hate = profit for me 🙂
Come talk to me, I'll tell you how much I enjoy it
😛.
Although, I will probably rant about how the Vista installer is bugged and it caused me to have to reinstall Vista the other day. I was a bit overjoyed when I saw the installed, unlike XP's, will not pick random names for the HDDs and you end up making your OS drive E or something. Then I take my DVD out, restart and I get a system disk error... lo-and-behold, Vista will always install the MBR on Disk 0, regardless of where you install Vista. I guess I'll always have to disconnect all drives but the OS drive from now on like I did with XP (to guarantee the OS drive being drive C).
Although now I've got two Vista machines running, I do notice an odd thing... Vista accessing a Vista machine's network share is
slow. There must be some weird overhead that "times out" because if I access it at first, it'll take a good 5-10 seconds, but once I access it once, it's fine until it sits for awhile. This is drive dependent as well. My main machine runs Vista Ultimate 32-bit and my server runs Vista Ultimate 64-bit if any of the people have heard of this in here.

I have encountered no real problems with gaming, couple of games I had to set to run as admin so they could update patches, general software usage is fine ,no problem with drivers(I have them all) ,overall I'm very happy with Vista x64,probably the best Microsoft OS I've ever used, still waiting for my first BSOD.
I don't recall any BSODs on either of my Vista installations, but I was under the impression that driver issues wouldn't necessarily cause full system instability anymore, but my video card drivers used to cause quite the amount of problems (they seem to have tamed down quite a bit now).
I
have crashed Windows Mail already though. I believe it was some issue with moving or elongating an appointment that caused the program to hang. Not a problem since I don't use it. If anyone here can make a suggestion to Microsoft, tell 'em to make an option for Windows Mail to minimize to the system tray
🙂.

Personally I do not think it is the functionality of Vista or lack there of is the biggest factor that makes people not want to use it. I think the fact they made such a big deal early on about all the anti-piracy stuff being built in to the OS makes people not want to use it. I think it scares the hell out of people to use it even though they would not pirate anything. The very thought that it could make a mistake and see something as pirated, cause lots unnecessary issues and possibly get them trouble is a BIG deterrent and a major reason for mass distrust of the product.
Heh, funny... if that were true, Vista would've erased my 2x 750GB Seagate drives already
😉.
