You're right, many Colts need work out of the box which is a shame... But is it is minor work, they can all be fixed.

Guess what his favorite is? A worked-over Llama, he swears by it. A qualified gun-smith who has enough expertise in 1911's can do wonders.

Don't have to worry about ammunition selection, it shoots everything just as well. Capacity is a concern, but only police are likely to get into shoot-outs. The typical civilian defense scenario is not a prolonged exchange of gun fire.

Yea, that is one thing to be said for revolvers, it somehow doesn't go bang, pull the trigger again. 😉

I'm not sure if it was luck, or the new aftermarket barrel, hand fitted bushing kit, match trigger, hand fitting of the slide and frame, firing pin and lock, extractor, etc. etc. heh

I don't know why, but whenever I see a picture of one of these, I can't help but think GIMMIE GIMMIE.

Kimber had just began producing a line of .45's at the time, they were an unknown quantity. He wanted a gun with all the aftermarket goodies and custom attention, but didn't have $2500 for the upper echelon of .45's like Baer or Wilson. That and it was in the same price range of a Kimber, including all the custom work.

In the hands of an expert, the Colt 1911 (or a clone) is possibly the best sidearm on Earth. I do find the grip on the CZ75 clones to be more comfortable, and the EAA Witness used to be a great bargain. Figure on spending another $100 after you buy for a trigger job on any new pistol.

Yes, the .50 Action Express. You can get a Desert Eagle chambered for it, not sure if anyone else bothers. The Freedom Arms .454 Casull is pretty mean, too.

I've never had the opportunity, but I'd say that the sheer intimidation factor of looking at a barrel with a 1/2 inch hole aimed at you has to be pretty high.

But, I wouldn't consider either one for concealed carry. A sidearm, yes. If I was going to wear an equipment belt or harness with ergonomic support for the extra weight, why not? Quite a few police and military organizations prefer the .45, but they have the luxury of just strapping it on a hip and heading out. For a citizen who has to make a point of keeping the weapon out of sight, I prefer a .38 special revolver.

If you want firepower, buy a Para Ordinance long slide .45. 16 rounds in the clip and almost match grade right out of the box. if you're looking for compact consider a Colt Combat Commander. Good balance for a smaller framed weapon. another you might consider is a Sig SP2340 in a S/W .40 . Good balance, compact frame, light weight, and woop-ass stoping power.

any of these will get you out of jam.
