Looking to buy a .45 hand gun . Are Llama's any good ? This will be just for self defense . I will get a concealed permit . I have an AMT backup .380 that I might carry , in lieu of the .45 .

"Now your .45's got a serious fusking jamming problem, but the niggas all want it 'cause they seen it on New York Undercover"

1911A1. Mags are cheap, parts are cheap, longest running firearm used by the USA.

I carried an M1911A1 for quite a while when I had a concealed weapons permit. I had had lots of training with those in the Army, so I knew what to expect from it. The big problem was carrying that thing, it was bulky and heavy. I bought a .38 cal. 5 shot S&W Lady Smith and loved it because it was so light and compact.

I had a Llama 9mm modeled to look like a M1911 for a while, and although it was a good looking gun, it was a POS. It was very inaccurate and the bullets tumbled coming out of the barrel. I don't know exactly what caused it, but you could look at the paper targets and see a perfect profile of the projectile as it passed through sideways. Sold that thing quickly!

You know how big these are & how hard it'll be to really conceal a .45, right?

I used one of the waist bags things that worked quite well to conceal it, but that SOB got heavy after a while. The Lady Smith would fit right in my pocket and not weigh much more than my wallet.

I have looked and looked for an AMT hardballer,as I love my backup . Thanks for the replies, looks like thumps down for Llama .

AMT Hardball, if you can find them. But I perfer a Colt 10MM over the 45 ACP.

Meh - I am no fan of the 10MM. It is abusive to the gun and shooter, and has little to offer over the .45 ACP in any dimension that matters to me.

You can't use hollow points or wad cutters. Only first rate full metal jacketed ammo and you won't have that problem. That and don't fill the magazine to max capacity. I think I only put in 7 instead of the full 9 (can't remember exact number right now) and that eliminated my jamming problem.

Springfield makes numerous styles of 1911's, one for every budget 🙂. My father has a Springfield Champion that he likes very well. Recoil isn't bad at all. They do offer V-ported barrels to help recoil, but I've never shot one with it so I can't compare.

Don't be frightened by the MSRP on the website. My dad paid abour $425 for his springfield champion in stainless, new in box, from a dealer.

A 1911 isn't all that difficult to conseal. I can carry a full size government model in a holster like this over a shirt and under a jacket, and you'd have to frisk me to find it. I'm a big guy (6'4", 212lbs) so that definatly helps.

If your looking for a carry .45, look at the Glock 30 or 36. If you do decide on a 1911 variant DO NOT GET CHEAP MAGS! Wilson model 47's or 47D's are one of the few I would recommend in a carry gun. Also if you decide to go with one of the 1911 variants, go with something like Kimber, Springfield, Les Baer, Wilson or other respected maker or smith.... A lot of people claim to do custom work on 1911's, but few do it really, really well. You pay for it when someone does good work.

The Glocks run extremely well out of the box, are easier to carry than a full sized 1911, are fairly low maintanence, and just have a lot going for them.

Dave

Edit: most important, learn how to use the gun properly, learn the laws of your state in regards to the use of deadly force and self defense, and disregard all the crap you have ever seen in the movies, on TV, read in the paper and heard from your cousins buddy who is 27 but was Special Operations in 'Nam... 🙂

Llama's are one of those 1911's that you buy then spend another four hundred dollars for a qualified gunsmith to make 'right', then you have a decent gun. 😛

The best .45's for the money today are the Kimber Customs, Springfield Armory, Para Ordinance, and Colt. This is not a gun you want to do on the cheap. If you want cheap, might as well buy a Ruger semi-auto handgun because they are about the best you're going to get for $400.

Get a Glock .40..lighter...easier to fire (less recoil than a .45), carries more bullets, and plenty of stopping power unless they're on crank.

But if you dying for a semi-classical 1911 looking .45 have you considered a wilson combat KZ-compact.

http://www.wilsoncombat.com/pistols/kz45_compact.asp

carries 9 bullets, very well made, resonable light, and is accurate...not priced too bad either.

I wouldn't use a .45 for a concealed carry, unless you're talking about carrying it in a vehicle. If it's going to be on you all day, go for a 9mm or possibly a 10mm/.40. Even the smallest .45s are too bulky to carry concealed on a regular basis. Eventually you'll get tired of it and leave it at home, which defeats the purpose of the permit.

For everyday carry a small .38 revolver or 9mm semi-auto is probably the best way to go.
