I didn't notice that at all. Reading through the thread again, I still don't notice that. The only person I see mentioning buying a 2nd 360 is mugs and he was just buying a 2nd 360...not replacing a broken 360.

And then what? It took them several years to actually fix the problem (assuming it actually is fixed, none of us have the data to prove that one way or the other).

The bad PR may have hurt them some, but I doubt they're unhappy about the position they're in right now.

Also, one thing Microsoft should stop doing because it's making their numbers look worse is that they keep replacing broken units with refurbished units which then just fail again. They should replace them with new ones.. because right now people are counting all these failing refurbs in the failure numbers and skewing things even worse. The new XBox's are way better than the original ones, and there is no way that they are failing at a 50+% rate off the shelf. Looking at the units that were in the original release that are failing now and being refurbished and failing again... MAYBE you're getting up near 50% then.

I don't doubt the failure rate is higher than ps3 or Wii, but there is no way in hell 50+% is accurate.

Pretty much my experience exactly. I bought my Falcon the week they showed up in stores, & haven't had a single issue with it. I even bought Best Buy's 2 year PSP since I was counting on it dying within two years. Mine is mostly used as a DVD/HD-DVD/XVID movie player though it doesn't see much gaming.

Nobody I know with a Falcon or newer has had a failure.

I have a very, very hard time believing a 50% failure rate. There's just no way that's accurate.

I don't know which version my 360 was. Bought it February 08, died July 09, got it replaced fairly simply. No complaints here. I go off and on with how much I play it, and on occasion I fall asleep leaving it on over night. So I can't expect it to work perfectly when I do shit like that.

I've been tempted to get an XBox 360 to use as a MCE as well as a gaming platform, but, given the high failure rate I can't convince myself it's worth it.

10% for the wii???!!?

the thing will never break it's like a gamecube

the only way it breaks is because the 8 year old kids playing it don't take good care of it and probably throw the wiimote at it and step on it if it's on the ground and stuff

also it doesn't matter if it's the least played. If it were played 5 hours a day instead of an hour that doesn't mean the failure rate will be 35%. Maybe 1-2% more. Running a PC 24/7 vs 8 hours a day doesnt' mean it will last 3 times longer.

Similar situation for me. I game with 4 others that have launch 360s, and we all still have them. Are we all just lucky?

All of my consoles are working properly still :). Albeit, I don't really play my consoles very often (360 or PS3).

Possibly, are your XBox's in an entertainment stand or some place other thing sitting on a wide open counter? I'm currently on my 5th(!), and have always used them in my TV stand(as a VERY responsible adult owner), which allows several inches on each side for ventilation but I have a feeling that's still not enough. I'm not going to change where I put it though. I buy a new one when my old one breaks and just sell the fixed one when it returns, so at least they're milking me for everything!

I game hard though, at least an hour or two every night on those high graphic shooters and stuff.

I actually have 2 360s now, and one PS3.

The launch 360 is in a media rack along with the PS3, DirecTV, amplifiers, etc., and probably gets an hour or so of play a day. Lately it's been getting a lot of Netflix streaming work.

The media rack is fairly well ventilated, but it does have a fair amount of heat generating stuff in it. The 360 is near the bottom of the rack along with the PS3, so they keep relatively cool.

The 360 was out well before the PS3, so it should have more failures. But still not as many.

If the PS3 had this problem, it would have never survived, imo. Its slow pace to pick up speed, and get a sustained rate of quality titles out, combined with failures like the 360 had would have killed it. Luckily for MS, the 360 was/is so popular, it has survived, and actually thrived.

These are Americans we're talking about...

It's really not THAT big of a deal if all the replacements are free you know....

I buy things to work, not to constantly replace them. I simply don't have the patience to replace electronics every two weeks. I have a life and I'm sure my fiancee will be asking why we still have that piece of junk in the house.

That's awesome that you buy things to work. It's such a RARE trait!!!! Oh, by the way, how is it that people who bought the 360 at launch were to know the failure rates?

Damn, you're telling me people don't do research before they buy? Caveat Emptor. That's been around since Jesus H. Christ. Live it, love it.

I want an XBOX 360 but I'm waiting until MS makes something fit enough to go into my living room.

Tell me, how would one have researched RROD at launch?

When the XBOX 360 launched, I remember hearing horror stories about its reliability.

I had a launch 360 fail on me after 25 days, but it wasn't the RROD. Took it back to Wal-mart.

1 year ago I bought a new 360 and I haven't any issues with this. All of you who think that the 54.2% figure is too low are ridiculous. There is no way it is above 40%.

By your own statement.. you're 1 for 2. Which is 50%. Which is about what the poll states. Also, several people in this poll have stated they had several die on them.

Your experiences dont mean that they are the same for everyone. Not everyone with Ford Explorers had tires explode on them, it doesnt mean it wasnt a real problem.

Do you think 54.2% is accurate for the Xbox 360 despite the obvious flaws in data collection method?

Do you think 10.6% is accurate for the PS3 despite the obvious flaws in data collection method?

No poll is going to be 100% accurate. I think both numbers seem about right. Even low for the 360 if you consider lots of people had multiple 360s fail.

I just found it funny that he thinks, "There is no way it is above 40%", when his own experience puts it above 40%.

If they broke it down by sku, year, model or anything else. I think the first versions would be much higher prone to failure, than newer versions. I think newer versions would be cut in half, if not more. But there are no numbers of this. And its already got a bad rap.

LOL, you're right Ackmed. Just based on his response, it seems like he bought 2 360, and 1 failed, so that puts him at 50%. My goodness! That's 4.2% below the survey average!!!!

Most polls have a margin of error. This one doesn't, because it's about as accurate as a blindfolded person throwing darts at a dartboard. Yeah it might hit the right spot, but only by chance.

Even 10% is an abnormally high failure rate. If 10% of PS3s were failing, we'd be hearing about it.

I don't know what the failure rate of the 360 is, and I couldn't even venture a guess - but you're a fool if you think the data from this poll is worthwhile.

The XBOX 360 has a 90% chance of failing within 4 years. We all know this.

yea basically it speaks to the quality of the games on the 360, they are very good. the other consoles don't break, but if you dont' want to play those games..it becomes irrelevant:p
