Unless you're regularly mingling in Republican-land I think a good deal of people on the left don't actually understand the dynamic Trump plays with the Republican party. Everybody knows Trump is an asshole. Almost all of his voters are completely aware of this. I would be willing to bet that more than half of the people who vote for Trump don't actually even like him on a personal level. People who vote for Trump do so as a shield against the things they do not like on the left. That's it. Republicans feel threatened by the left and Trump is the savior and it doesn't matter what he does or how he does it so long as he shields them in the end. He can shoot someone in the middle of the street or grab you by the pussy, it doesn't matter, he's still going to get votes because liberals are that much worse. There's no mystery nor secret here, it's honestly that simple. Humans love making things complicated.

As for DeSantis / Trump, if Trump runs they're going to obviously vote for Trump. But Republicans at this point would like to break free of Trump's baggage and DeSantis is a clean slate and by doing shit like shipping immigrants to Martha's Vineyard, to taking on Disney, declaring war against 'wokeism,' so forth and so on, Republicans love this shit. If Trump and DeSantis go head to head DeSantis will win. I personally know of exactly zero Republicans that want Trump over DeSantis, even prior to the win in Florida they already wanted DeSantis. I'm even including Trump supporters I know who have attended Trump rallies.

Here's a fun experiment. If you know a Republican ask if they want Trump or DeSantis. The answer isn't going to be Trump. If DeSantis wins the R primary and runs for the presidency then Democrats might actually see that supposed red wave that was alleged to occur the other day.

2 years is an eternity in politics, and we have no idea who the Dems will nominate, or what happens to DeSantis. Remember in 2008, two years before that it was definitely going to be Hilary's year - and Obama stole that right out from under her..

But there is one guarantee here. If Trump and Desantis run - it will get ugly, and that will only be good for the Dems.

Yes, Trump is a weak candidate as I've always said and Republicans would very likely do better.

While I agree that hatred for liberals is the primary animating force behind the Republican Party I don't agree at all that Republicans don't like Trump. Not only do the polls indicate they like him a lot, I also think while they don't always admit it the Republican base greatly enjoys Trump's sadism. They don't just want to win, they want the person who wins to crush their enemies - they don't just want liberals out of power, they want to see them suffer. DeSantis and other hopefuls understand this, which is why you see them take every opportunity to crush and dominate entities that the base thinks of as liberal.

A more sane person might think 'my god, my base are monsters, let's do something else' but here we are.

Umm, I wouldn't be this overconfident. Trump would defeat Kamala Harris, almost certainly IMHO. She just turns a lot of people off, including Black men. I don't know if Liz Warren runs again, but Trump has a "fair fight" against her as well. There are still a lot of Muricans who are at least "hesitant" about a female POTUS. 🙄

Maybe, but then I wouldn't count on Harris running and think Warren would still have a shot. I just hope Biden realizes that, if he runs in 2024, people will vote for him mainly because he's Not Trump.

With 98% reported, looks like Boebert has pulled ahead by about 400 votes. Not sure how much is outstanding or in what counties.

I still see on the NYT website that Pitkin county still has 20% of the vote left to count, it is fairly populated, and in favor of the Dem. Pueblo has 90% of the vote in and it is also leaning Dem, just not as much as Pitkin.

Which is why the lack of a red wave must be so infuriating to him here, in addition to affecting his own prospects. Someone probably explained to him that the presidents party gaining seats during midterms almost never happens. As I understand it, in our previous 60 mid-term elections, it's only happened twice before. Once over the Great Depression, and once for 9/11 fever. Now Trump gets to be the reason for #3. Haha!

I think you’re wrong. Looking at a few right wing extreme forms today I was shocked at how many have kicked Trump to the curb and want him to shut up and sit down. Most of them feel DeSantis has what Trump needs. And he delivered huge in Florida. The majority of what were die hard Trumpers seem to have moved on.

One thing that Desantis doesn't have that Trump does (or has in the past) is that he's not handled adverse questioning well. And that will absolutely come out in any run he makes at POTUS. You can't stay in your bubble with FL state troopers keeping people out that you don't want in. It showed in his debate, and he flubbed it. Badly.
