I'm guessing its done for cap reason? If you put them straight on IR you still have to pay and maybe even count against your IR cap? But if you release then re-sign you can bring them back as a practice squad or something.

If they signed him and put in straight on IR, he would count against the cap and as a spot on the roster (can't be on IR until later, I believe). So, the Panthers were trying to go into the start of off season with 90 healthy spots and after the cuts to 53, place him on IR.

So they basically risk a valuable player (when he's healthy) for a chance to view one more guy at camp? LOL.

He is missing the entire season and would have counted against their cap this year. That wasn't a problem for NE, as they scouted him before the draft anyway and were interested. This gives them basically a free RB without using a draft pick. The Panthers were trying to get another guy at camp and free up the $450k cap hit for 2014.
 
This is hilarious. I hate the Pats and am somewhat indifferent/supportive of the Panthers...but I hope this guy turns out to be a stud for the Pats next season.

The best part is not that the Pats have done this before (to those asshole Giants), but that the Panthers did this same thing to the Browns in like 2009. And now, they are crying about it.

The rule is to keep teams from stashing players

You have a player you like but isn't quite ready for prime-time? Normally you might try to get him on your practice squad, but wait! some other team might snatch him away! So they would designate him as IR instead and no other team could claim him.

So now teams have a choice, they can either put him on IR now and expose the player or keep him on the active roster through final cutdowns and THEN put him on IR without fear of someone else claiming

Initial round of bids for the Bills are in. 3 bids, according to reports are Rogers Sports Group (Bon Jovi's group), Donald Trump, and Terry Pegula (Current Sabres owner). Pegulia is rumored to have put in an initial bid of $1.3 billion.

Buffalo fans are holding their collective breath and praying that Pegula ends up with the team as he's a Buffalo native, a Buffalo sports fan (he bought the Sabres to save them from insolvency and being moved out of Buffalo) and would keep the team in Buffalo.

I'm not sure Trump can buy it, I think there's some kind of rules against owners also being in the gambling business or something.

And as for 2, 3, and 4, which are similar. The whole TV package deal is a complete mess. I understand the public networks like CBS and FOX "owning" certain publicly broadcasted games, but why the hell can't I buy a reasonably priced streaming package? I'd be willing to pay $100 to 150 a year for an all-inclusive package that allows streaming every game on my mobile device or home computer. Leave the commercials in, I don't care. I just want to be able to stream the game to my TV using something like ROKU, Apple TV, or Chromecast, and also be able to view it on my phone or tablet on the go.

I used it last year when it came with Madden. No bundle this year so I'm happy they're offering this option. I can't get DirecTV in my apartment otherwise I'd have gone that route.
 
Eh, can't say I am too upset about the Tyron Smith signing. He is an amazing tackle, especially for his age, and has been to a Pro Bowl already. That 8 year deal makes him make a bit more than the currently highest paid tackle (who plays for the Browns...) and, it is likely that these contracts are similar to Kaep's "oh look at this big number... that in order to get he will have to break every QB record and win the Super Bowl every season to get."

Regarding Smith... as an example there's virtually no way Dez gets an extension done this year now thanks to said salary cap. Granted this is the Cowboys so pretty much nothing they do ever makes sense, but does that make a bit more sense now?

You say that like it is a bad thing? As a Cowboy's fan, I can remember a lot more huge extension WR contracts that haven't exactly turned out great for us than those that I can. Dez has even stated he isn't even that interested in worrying about a big extension. Worst case, Dallas franchises him. Aww, boohoo, he only gets $12 million for next year and can then work to get a large contract they will certainly work to give him.

And who didn't think Patrick Peterson wasn't going to get a huge contract? I will admit, I am surprised it is more than Sherman's, but not that surprised.
 
Rumor has it that the next Sunday Ticket deal and other TV deals could be huge and make the cap bigger than previously thought in the coming years.
 
new tv deals start this season, which is why you've got cbs thursday games and fox/cbs losing conference exclusivity.

This is the last year of the DirecTV deal though. I am going to make a guess that the NFL is either going to have their own streaming service or contract someone to do it on their behalf.

MLB.TV is fantastic. i can get every out of network game streamed on a billion different devices for $150/yr(split amongst friends). Im surprised the NFL doesnt do something like that. even better if the local teams come with.
 
people have wanted that last couple of times, and part of the last TV deal was them unloading all the production cost from thursday onto cbs so not sure if they want to start a streaming service of their own.
