Some people on social media have pointed out that Texas officials are huge fans of "blue alerts", dramatically overuse them, and likely leads to people turning off cellular alerts.

From reading the NOAA/NWS accounts, it does seem like the local people are trying to pass the buck for their slow response:

From CNN article:

The Kerr County tragedy also shines a spotlight on the limitations of current forecasting technology: It is simply not yet possible to predict that a cluster of thunderstorms dumping months’ worth of rain would stall out over a specific spot. Research efforts to find answers to these forecasting questions could soon slip backwards, experts warn, if the Trump administration’s 2026 budget proposal is enacted — just as the country needs to push the limits on what weather models are capable of.

The budget seeks to eliminate all of NOAA’s weather and climate research labs along with institutes jointly run with universities around the country. The entire research division of NOAA would be eliminated under the proposal, which is subject to congressional approval.

This would shut down research and development of new forecasting technologies, including computer modeling and severe weather warning scenarios, and hamper prediction of hazards including flash floods.

One of the NOAA labs slated to be shut down is the National Severe Storms Lab in Norman, Oklahoma, which works to improve flash flood forecasting among other hazards from severe thunderstorms.

The NOAA research cuts would come just as human-caused climate change is resulting in more frequent and intense downpours like the ones that led to this tragedy in Texas.

I will ever be with Neil deGrasse Tyson on this issue. Until some pertinent fact makes Mars easier.

Tyson is neglecting one crucial variable and it makes him wrong on the subject.

Political will.

Its going to be a hell of a lot easier to "agree" and get a terraforming program running on Mars than getting the current constellation of political fractions around the globe to agree on doing anything about climate change on earth. Its a fucking lost cause. Brace for impact.

This is correct. I turned mine off when I lived there because they abused the system and I don't need to be woken up at 2 in the morning for something that happened miles away and doesn't involve me at all.

we don't need all them eggheads telling us what's going on when it's clearly gawd taking his children back to heaven for the Rapture(tm).

seriously: MAGA, er, the GOP, is an apocalyptic death cult. You can very easily explain all of the fucking self-murdering nonsense they do, and want to drag the rest of us into, by the plain and very loud fact that they are religious nutjobs that believe their hateful god will return to murder everyone that isn't like them and then bring only them into heaven. They believe this to their core and do everything they can to speed up this process, and certainly silence anything that offers any kind of alternative explanation to things that are happening in the world.

We've said it again and again, but humanity can not survive US Republicans. They are a fundamentalist death cult and must be destroyed.

I didn't realize how big the "elites control the weather" fanclub is.

Like do people really believe this stuff? In the year 2025?

No need to preserve the environment for future generations when Armageddon is always just around the corner!

I'm all for destroying the R party completely and ASAP. I think America will function better with multiple parties. I don't know if 3 major parties (or more) can work here. If so, that would be better than 2. I doubt that Musk's idea for a new 3rd party can work because he's such a disaster. But the R's should be tilled under.

3 (or mor major parties won't happen until the election system is changed. The reason we have two parties is precisely because of winner-take-all elections and no ranked choice voting. The outcome is binary - either you win or you lose, so the optimal chance of winning is to have everyone oppose "the other guy". A 3rd party is a guaranteed spoiler otherwise, because those votes could have helped you win.

Insane RWNJ politician, says the Texas flood is fake.

"Taylor, whose X bio reads: “Christian. Georgian. MAGA. Jesus, Guns & Babies,” also notes that she’s a candidate for Congress in 2026."

The Majority Report had a segment today basically illustrating.. the right wing MAGA do not think it's the government's job to provide safety and security for the citizens.

That's it.. there's no other explanation for getting rid of FEMA/ Medicare/ Medicaid.

They believe the government should only exist to enrich their donors.. and nothing else! (oh and bomb Israel's enemies)

I do, it can't. First past the post, no ranked choice, and the party in power being able to pick the president if no one gets to 270 ensure two parties is the only stable equilibrium. Though now that we don't have a constitution anymore none of that shit matters, the GOP just wins because they count the electoral votes.

I find it hard to believe that that level of corruption will endure in America. Americans don't want a one party rule. Some do but on the whole I don't think it will sit well. Competition is cleansing. We'll see.

Theoretically no one is above the law in America. I think almost all judges in America would agree with that statement. Any that wouldn't would be looked on askance as a jerk and unworthy of their robes by their peers. What I'm saying here is it is not clear to me that DJT is above the law. He acts like he is, is presumptive, has disdain for the law if it isn't in accordance with what he wants at any particular time and does whatever he can to dismiss whatever is in his way. He may figure he's immune, but some things will not play out as he imagines.

Covid-19 almost killed him. An assassin almost killed him. Death will have sway and he will be covered in dirt. In the interim, I say, he will not be king of the USA.

You forgot guns. Next time those Hollywood Jews use their space lasers to seed clouds above your head, shoot 50 rounds up in the sky! Let Freedom Rain!

Reminded me of this scene from Don't Look Up!!!

He can't be prosecuted for crimes he commits when he calls them official acts and his big bullshit bill completely ended the ability for the courts to enforce contempt orders against him or his regime. That is being above the law. Plus the crooks on the supreme court shut down every court order that goes against him. You live in a fascist dictatorship, there is no constitution any more.

There is a constitution but it's not being respected.

At this point, it's just a piece of paper. There are numerous recent examples of cases where multiple sections of different amendments have either been completely ignored, or interpreted so narrowly as to make them impossible to enforce/impose.

As far as you are concerned that may be true. But not for me.

The Constitution's still there. When it has been officially discarded null and void, it will be naught but history. But right now, it's still there. Trump swore to abide by it, defend it. He's disgraced himself as have those who haven't resisted him and deplored his disregard for his duties as president and his endless self-aggrandizement.

Here's a great comment I just read to Jeff Flake's newly published opinion piece at The New York Times:

Robert Porter

As an ex-senator, Mr Flake is in an excellent position to answer a very non-rhetorical question I've had since Jan 20. What exactly is so wonderful about being a senator that is worth giving up your soul for? We see deficit hawks embracing the budget busting bill, we see Ukraine supporters switching sides to kowtow to Russia, we see senators gleefully gutting medical care for their constituents, we see people allegedly of faith endorsing the most gratuitous cruelty, avarice and corruption, and we see people sworn to uphold the Constitution trample it in the dirt. They all could halt this with a WORD, but fear for their job. I've never had a job worth my honor and character. So what is it about being a senator that is? Seriously, Mr Flake.

My point is, is it really "still there" if the contents are ignored/swept aside/toothless?

Officially discarded or not, if it's not being followed, then it might as well not even be mentioned. That's why I get a chuckle anytime someone says something like "that's not legal" in response to anything this regime does. The law that now matters is whatever they decide it is. There is no consistency. There is no pattern. There is no more precedent. It's simply whatever will allow them to do whatever it is on that given day.
