Cops work from a position of authority. If that is compromised, what else do they have to use?

why would you do things to provoke or threaten them? walking up to their car can be mistaken as a threat. why not just cooperate.

They have guns. People get shot by cops all the time. Usually the cop is not punished for shooting people. Why would you want to get shot?

you'd have to understand the incident, she forgot something she needed to "pull me up"

after screaming at me to get back in my car, when she realized what I was trying to give her, she thanked me

there's your problem right there. You shouldn't get out of your car unless you're asked. To many things can go wrong. Especisally since she's a female officer I'm sure she has to be more cautious

They risk their lives for low pay. They never know at a stop like this whether they're getting a normal citzen, a smartass like you, or a felon or druggie who's afraid of having their license checked (or car searched) and has a gun.

Stop acting like a punk kid, and making a hard job even more difficult, or you'll deserve a bit of mace.

uh-oh... ATOT is starting to RADIATE the stench of bacon.

I didn't give you enough information for you to be able to legitimatley judge me, so why don't you just take it? I don't give 2 cents a rat's @ss what kind of people are in the world, everyone's first priority needs to be respect. I don't care if youre a cop, a McDonald's worker or a CEO, no respect, no game.

My watching my rights != lack of respect.

Edit: I will give you this though, I wasn't driving when this happened. I was parked enjoying a cigarette and cleaning out my car in a campus parking lot where I have every right to be via legit parking pass.

It all started when she asked me for my ID and told me it wasnt a traffic stop and I made her bargain with me to get it
Reads like solid evidence of you being a smartass to me. Had you been drinking too?

I dont know about "low pay" my college roomate at 24 joined the NY police department in a small subburb and was getting paid $96,000

it seems NY cops have very HIGH salaries.

I take personal offence to that one. I would never get within a quarter mile of my car if I had even been NEAR alcohol within the last 24 hours, tyvm.

As for the ID....
If I wasn't driving, and I wasn't doing anything wrong...

Nevada state law says that individuals must do so if a police officer has reasonable suspicion that a crime has been or will be committed.

That link you gave is for Nevada state law. According to your profile, you're in PA. So, how does that affect you?

Stop acting like you're being oppressed, and don't be a jackass to cops. Nobody's going to join your civil rights movement.

Cops. Bleh. I respect them but I dont like the fact is SO easy for them to abuse thier power. On a whim. Its complete bullshyte. Thus, for the most part I dont like cops simply because of that reason.
Now, in my experience most cops I've had to deal with were decent. But then again, I smiled and showed them the puckerhole so they could ram the hell out of it to their liking.....

One more vote for the fact that they have NO CLUE what they are getting into every time they interact with someone.

You have to realize the cop can't read your mind, therefore can't read your motive. You need to respect the fact that they are giving you sh!t because they are scared you might do something stupid. Take your own advice and respect them too, even though they may hurt your pride, at least they won't shoot you over a misunderstanding.

And from what I've read, it's more like you have a problem following directions than an officer abusing authority. You said yourself you made her bargain with you to get your ID. You ever worked at a job where someone was smartassing you around?

Keep "bargaining" and "walking towards the police car". Like most life issues this isnt a game . They have guidelines that you dont seem to want to follow . Sooner or later you will get on the wrong side of a cop and when you 'bargain' or move towards the police car , you will get arrested .

That's why I could never be a Cop. I would propbably beat the snot out of you with my night stick and then press some trumped up charges against you.

I never have problems with police... I've been pulled over twice, I was friendly and cooperative and was treated the same. Both times I was let go with a verbal warning. I've been sorta involved in a bar fight... I helped to break it up, but if an officer had walked up in the middle of it he would have mistaken me for one of the drunken disorderly fighters. I was handcuffed and put in the back of the car where I sat for 20 minutes just waiting while they sorted stuff out... then an officer came and talked to me about what happened and he verified my story with the bartender and bouncers and let me go. If I had been sitting back there kicking the window yelling "let me go, I didn't do anything you pigs!" I most definately would have gone to jail.

If you're a smartass to a cop, trying to argue whether they can detain you or not, they're going to find a reason to detain you and give you a hard time... just like you went out of your way to give them a hard time. Police have no tolerance for smartass teenagers... they deal with those types every day, and if you're a smartass teenager, you're just another pain in their ass, so don't expect to be treated any differently.

*EDIT* On a side note, they have a reason for asking you to do certain things. When you get pulled over, don't rummage through your glove box looking for your registration... for all they know, you're looking for a gun or a knife. Leave your hands on the steering wheel in plain sight and don't do a damn thing until they ask you to. Since I didn't use to have power windows, I didn't even roll my window down before they got to the car, cause again, for all they know, you could have a gun or a knife sitting on the floor there. If you're not in a car and for whatever reason, they feel the need to handcuff you or search you, allow them to. You don't have to be under arrest to be handcuffed... they can chose to handcuff you and put you in the back of their car for their own safety if they're talking to someone else and think you might become a problem for them. When they tell you to put your hands on the car, or a wall and spread your legs... don't just casually stand there with your legs apart a little bit... that annoys the shyt outta them because the whole reason for having you in that position is not to search you, it's to put YOU in such a position that you can't move quickly to attack them while they're searching you. So if you submit, and put yourself in a vulnerable position and leave them in the position of power, they'll be less aggrivated with you.

BTW... you're required by law to present identification when requested by a police officer. They don't need anything "on you."

How can you say "all cops" abuse their power ?

How can you assume that everyone is as nice and unthreatening as you think you are ? You see and experience what the cops do everyday and you'll know why they are defensive first and foremost. If they act passive, they lose their advantage in case something is awry.

No matter what you believe, it sounds like you were disobeying authority from the get-go. If you just complied, it most likely would've been over in a couple minutes... instead you were "detained". Which way would you rather have it ? You have nothing to lose so long as you did nothing wrong, but you made something wrong.

Actually you are required to identify yourself when asked, not present identification. A subtle but important difference in my opinion. The closest thing we have to "papers" at present is a drivers license. As far as I know if you are not driving an automobile you are not required to carry a drivers license. I think this is probably the main issue in the Nevada case linked above. Having said all this if you are walking and have your drivers license on your person it probably makes it easier for all concerned parties to let the officer see it when requested.
