11th Annual Folding@Home Holiday Season 3-way Race

well, dammit. what a nice way to start the day. the 970 devoted to 24/7 has reverted to idle frequencies during the night and refuses to spin up to 3D frequencies. at this point i'm really starting to suspect some firmware protection limit going on here, maybe related to power draw. she's still folding, but at idle frequencies, for a miserable 50kppd. ok, here's the plan. no folding for 24 hours so that everything cools off. since the windforce has shown no signs of downclocking or similar yet, i'll make the culprit my daily driver and the other my 24/7 card, hoping that i've not fried something permanently in the power delivery circuitry.

Speaking of idle, when does the one week race end? And what happens for the remaining three weeks? I'm confused regarding what is ending and what is continuing.

For the entire month, the 2 internal teams are racing against each other AND we are racing the Hardware Canucks.

Only for the first 7 days are we racing against Toms Hardware

I think I'm going to ease down after we beat Toms. HC are pretty far behind and I'm sure you can pick up my slack. From the sounds of it you aren't even out of toes yet counting PCs in your home. 🙂

First, our intermal team still needs the points, and I just lost 2 million ppd !!

Hey guys!

I've been down and out with the flu so I didn't get my F@H set up in time. Sorry about that. I said I would only be folding until the 7th, but since I missed that window, I'll see what I can do later this month. 😛

See ya guys around.

Here are the stats for December 6, 2016, the fifth full day of the race. The stats are from http://folding.extremeoverclocking.com/team_list.php?s=, updated at 18:00 UTC (=12pm CST). Only the points count. The ppd is there for information only. The race between Tom's hardware and TeAm Anandtech ends December 8, 2016, at 18:00 UTC.

The snowmen are outproducing the Yetis! Will this be a repeat from previous years?

OK, this is really a nice race ... fold more, please, more! More, MOre! MORe! MORE!

@petrusbroder just wanted to point out that the race with Tom's is actually slated to end tomorrow (the 7th), which was the proposed date and published in the announcements. We can certainly amend that to extend it so the race runs a full 7-day week, but I think AT has sealed up the victory nicely 🙂

a) Dayuuummmm..... 53 million. *phew*

b) The cost of entry into the top 20 is rather "expensive". VirtualLarry is right now at #20 at 545k ppd. You're not making it easy for those that are primarily folding with CPUs to get on that list. lol...

BTW...for those that might be running into idle "issues", you might be interested in reading this:

It appears that there are two "modes" that this "error" state can manifest:

for CPU slots, make sure that the number of threads is an even number. It seems that if you let it auto select, and you have an odd number of GPUs, that it will set the number of threads for the CPU slot to be an odd number. Looks like that it's best to manually set it to an even number, especially for higher core counts (i.e. 6 cores and up).

for both CPU and GPU slots, periodically the client hangs while trying to get a new WU assignment.

From my research on the Folding@Home forums, it looks like that's a known issue in the v7.7.4 client, which they say that the best and easiest method to rectify that is to reboot your computer.

For more savvy/advanced users, pause your folding taskings, quit FAHControl, and end the FAHClient processes and restart them.

That seems to be the prescribed resolution method over there at the F@H Forums.

They do have a v7.4.15 open beta that's supposed to be available, but I haven't and won't be trying it.

Hope this helps anybody who might be running into issues while the race is on.

Well it does not matter for me. 😉

I'll do the stats anyway for day 6 (December 7) and for day 7 (December 8) and to the end of the month since we have the race against the Hardware Canucks Forum to take care of.

Hehe , yep....or good timing maybe...
I closed that other thread !! ( =) )

I want to tell my team that this race is going on forever , we've doubled our production , that's awesome !!
hehe.

Good work everyone.

According to EOC, I've produced 1,001,631 points in the last 24hr. So it might take a week for my "PPD" to reflect my actual production at this point. (Since it's a running 7-day average.)

I feel a bit exhilarated, with that number. I never quite thought I would reach that high. Granted, I've got 9 GPUs, and one CPU on F@H right now.

Found you! You'll be in the stats tomorrow.
You can probably just leave me off. My GPU keeps failing in the F@H client. I looked around the forum and it seems to be a driver issue. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of a few newer games right now and don't want to roll back to an old driver. Sorry for the trouble.
