This post is for everyone in here that keeps recommending 1GB of RAM for new computers - Benchmarks

I was using 850 MB just a couple of hours ago. Don't tell me I don't need 1 GB. Newsreaders can be large memory hogs, I run a lot of background stuff, and at any given time I am probably running either VMware or Photoshop, either of which are rather large memory sinks. I give 384 to my linux...

I am thinking about getting a dvd burner... Pioneer?

If you can get a good deal on it, great toy to buy. I'm using a 104 (OEM A04) and I'm very happy with it.

i don't get it (ati driver myths)

Oh, actually I did try NFS2 at a LAN I was at but I ended up uninstalling it. Everything up, 4x AA + 8x AF and no issues. And as for the person who said there are MMC issues, I haven't had any, but most people I hear complaining about ATi's drivers do so in reference to non-AIW cards, so I can...

i don't get it (ati driver myths)

I've had a 9700 AIW Pro for about a month and a half now. I was building a new system to include it, and the only thing I did was of course a fresh install of windows, DX9, and Catalyst 3 drivers. No tweaking. I have played the following games on it: Age of Wonders II Battle Realms...

    Dampening/Quieting a Computer Project

Why OC for silence? Unless it's an easy OC, like a P4 1.6@2.13, the issue is that OCing is a cost cutting manuver unless you are overclocking a high end chip (in which case you need serious cooling), and silence costs money.

    DVD-R, DVD+R Owners......please post here!

They do. I had some Apple Verbatim OEMsm but then my PS2 decided it didn't like any discs manufactured by Verbatim anymore. I also had some Apple Maxells, but I didn't really feel like trusting them, so I just returned them.

New DVD burner best media and source?

I use only TDK media, and it works great even on my crappy ailing PS2. I buy them retail for about $4 apiece at CompUSA, but if you look online you can probably get it cheaper.

    arctic silver question

Thermal compound noob here :o I am thinking about swapping heatsinks for my P4 Northwood. I used Arctic Silver 3 with the stock heatsink, and I was wondering if I needed to clean off and reapply the thermal compound on the heatspreader or if I could just apply it to the heatsink and then wipe...

    Best Gaming Mouse

I love my MX700. And I'm not some undersensitive twit that can't tell the difference between a 30ms LCD and a 16ms LCD or anything, I am very anal about things that involve sense. I can tell you that there is absolutely no sluggishness with the MX700, and anybody that says otherwise either...

    DVD-R, DVD+R Owners......please post here!

    1) Pioneer DVR-104 (OEM version of A04) 2) Prassi PrimoDVD 2.0 3) Apple (OEM TDKs) and TDK branded TDKs 4) PS2 backups, backups of real data on my machine!!! (at 4.7 gigs per -RW, no more sitting there and swapping CD-RWs for me when I want to backup my Mp3 collection, it fits nicely on 2...

But gaming on all resolutions is sucky with the Parhelia :D

Matrox Parhelia is still running $300+... at what price would you consider buying one?

If there was a PCI version and I could somehow get a second LCD, then I might consider getting one for $150 for use on a second display for 2d stuff (but only if the 2d quality was noticeably better than a DVI TFT on the 9700 Pro).

    sound card recommendations

It can't be a Creative card. I'm not a creative hater, I've used their products for awhile, but I just built a new SFF system and their cards since the Live! are all so friggin huge they won't fit. 16 cm is the maximum length for a PCI card in this system, and I'm not quite happy with how the...

How many HD have died on you over the course of your computing experience?

None. And I was stressing a 75GXP pretty heavily for 2 years, and powered on 24/7. It was from the Hungarian plant too, and with no active cooling, close to other heat-producing components like the CPU and video card, and near the back of the case with no rear exhaust fan except the one on a 3...
