Launch msconfig , Start > Run and type msconfig and press enter
Startup Tab uncheck everything but Scan Registry and System Tray
click ok and reboot. See if that stops the lockups. If it does then one
of those programs is causing the lockups. Recheck /Reboot one at a
time to find it.

Run an antivirus scan on that machine. I've seen boot sector viruses cause that exact problem.
They intercept calls to the ide channels, causing windows to say the device is malfunctioning
in device manager, and will also cause cd-roms not to be detected by windows at all.
This should restore your thumbnail view. I know tweakui allows you to enable thumbnail view if everything was working before installing tweakui.
You could try this first if you want.

The volume control icon is the easy part.
Control panel>multimedia >audio tab
check "show volume control on taskbar"
Well since you've checked device manager for problems, have you looked in AudioHQ > speakers and looked there. There's a 'test' button.

I've had mine setup that way for year and a half now with no
ill effects. Some people might say to put it on the secondary slave tho. I don't have a cdrw yet so I've been backing up data to my zip so
I use it alot but thats getting old and considering the cost of zip disk , cdrw is the way to go.
Try another floppy cable, as strange as that may sound that fixed their dmi verification hang even though a bios setting is the cause many times.
Check your Integrated Periperals menu look for udma settings and uncheck to see if you get past the dmi hang.
