WIth Q3 1.27, the lightmaps and the sky have an option not to be compressed when DXTC is on, which fixes much of the problems and is noticably slower.
I think the variable for this is:
r_ext_compress_texutres 1
For the compression of all textures, which looks shocking, i think the variable...
Hmm, GF cards convert textures to 16bit with DXT1 on, and hardware reviewers leave DXT1 on on while reviewing cards with q3, even though it looks like crap.
Could it be that nVidia was cheating with Q3 benchmarks and possibly others?

IMO its not worth getting the heatsink off and overclocking the core since it doesn't improve performance much. The GF2 MX is memory bandwidth limited, and the best way to improve performance is to overclock the memory.
I also heard the 64mb ones are more overclockable since they use Hyundai DDR SDRAM which is more overclockable than the Infineon DDR SGRAM. But IMO its not worth the extra cost for the extra 32mb.
Extra power consumption is not bad in itself. Same deal with heat, its not bad itself.
Its the effects its causes which are bad. If the card doesn't lock up or screw up the system somehow because of it, well then I don't see anything that's wrong with it.
