I currently have a PIII 500 with 256mb of PC100 memory and a GeForce2 GTS...below are the specs on my new sytem that will arrive later this week....think this will improve my frame rates in UT? ;)

Pentium IV 1.5 ghz
128mb PC800 RDRAM
GeForce2 GTS 64MB ULTRA
60GB 7200 ULTRA ATA/100 HARD DRIVE
TOSHIBA 16X DVD ROM
SOUND BLASTER LIVE!
BOSTON ACOUSTICS BA735 DIGITAL SPEAKERS W/ SUBWOOFER

This will go my existing Diamond Pro 2040u monitor. I'm thinking about getting another 128mb of ram. I'm just wondering if I would notice a difference. I'm currenlty using 256 of PC100 memory but I'm wondering if the PC800 will make up for the 128mb. Any one have any idea?

WOOOOO HOOOOO!

I can't see why you would order a P4 system. Why don't you get a P3 1GHz? It will be cheaper and will be faster clock for clock in most programs (probably UT as well).

I'm thinking about getting another 128mb of ram

Get another 128 MB stick, but with RDRAM the price will be waaaaay too high.

That rdram wont be alot faster than your sdram(at least not 8 times like you think). as we all know p4 sucks.

I'm getting it for Christmas. It's not costing me a dime :) Mine as well shoot for stars since it's free!

Pricewatch.com has 128MB RDRAM 800Mhz for $169. >>> Thats actually pretty affordable!

You do realize that the memory has to run in pairs, hence the name dual channel RDRAM. The system comes with two 64MB RIMMs. You need to get two more 64MB RIMMs to get 256MB. Also, the price has gone way down on RDRAM. It's no longer out of the reach of average users.

You hit it on the head noxipoo. Like I said it's a gift.....I can't refuse. :)

AdamK47 - 3DS I did not realize memory runs in pairs....thanks for the info.

If you (or who ever) can afford it, then go for it.

I'd rather go for an Athlon1.2Ghz or Dual P3 933's though... for totally different reasons.

BTW, I'd get around 256Mb ram minimum (128MB pair). Actually I would go for 512Mb, but thats just me.

wont you have to get a pair of rdram sticks to upgrade?
so double that price and end up with a extra 256 or get 2 64 meg chips and have no more slots

i thought they fixed the p4's so they could run not paired, . . . maybe im wrong, just look into the case before you buy the ram, just in case

It'll be faster than what you have now, but I'd rather get a TBird 1.2 GHz, socketA will be around for awhile(I think), and the socket the P4 is in(forget what it's called?) will already be replaced when Intel releases the next version of the P4.

I would put the RAM up to 256MB G14, it will really make a difference on a rig that fast. With only 128MB, you are really going to be RAm starved.

Can I get 2 128mb sticks and put them along side the 2 64mb sticks or do they all have to be 64mb

They can be any size you want (the same size for each pair) but have to be paired. (that means 2 :))

Yes. Not really because you bought a p4 (which you have to want to get screwed to buy), but more because you're bragging about having someone buying it for you.

<< If those were my specs I'd be too embaresed to put them in my sig >>

I'd be more embarassed posting a p4 system in my sig.;)

And finally,

And the flamers surface.

I never "bragged" about someone buying this for me. I simply stated that this was not something that I picked out for my self.

FLAME ON FELLAS!

Dude calm down, you're the one who basically told someone else that their computer sucks.

Yes, Canada is a great country and I am a loyal Canadian Citizen. However, I feel embarassed by such immaturity! I hate to say this but, typing in caps to cheer patriotism towards your country is something a kid in 8th grade does.

Being proud to be Canadian is one thing, being abnoxious is another. It seems like your also proud in getting a P4(overly priced) computer system for free for christmas. What comes to my mind is that a spoiled rich kid is bragging his parents who bought him a $5000(CDN) computer system and its sitting under his tree for him to play UT.

Seriously, you should enjoy it. It will run well. Gateway's Pentium IV won Editor's Choice from PC Magazine, if that means anything. ;) At least the person who picked it made the right choices in terms of the video card and other options. Enjoy. :)

Ah come on, don't feel sore because someone's getting an expensive system. Let him get it and share his experience with it. I'm always interested in seeing how hardware I don't have performs (still itching to try a Thunderbird, but will not because it'll break my 1.5 year CPU/motherboard upgrade policy :p). I'd love see to what some _users_ think of their new hardware rather than reading about it from those robotic benchmarking sites.

floppy heads and beady eyes... :Q

(I always have some stupid spelling error that needs fixing :p)
