Porn is blocked as well as other filters they use and gambling websites but apart from that everything is game.

The only stuff they block is mandated by our parent company, the local IT group takes a pretty much hands off approach.

Their exact words were:

If people want to risk their $50,000 a year job surfing porn, so be it.

us too we dont block anything. but we did have to send out a company wide email last month to warn people to stop streaming music or watching youtube stuff. our bandwidth was getting used up. after the email the problem stopped.

In all my hours of surfing the web i have never come across a blocked site, but i have never tried a porn or gambling site so i don't know about those.

I stick mostly to fantasy baseball and forums.

We have two physically segregated networks where one has internet access for research etc. and the other for intranet applications and data connected to multiple worldwide offices via private vpn. Everything is logged but nothing is really blocked other than popular webmail sites. There is an IT resources acceptable use policy "booklet" in addition to corporate compliance etc. that everyone must read, acknowledge, sign and return to HR when starting. IT generates reports of violations - everyone knows this - but it's still often fun times during quarterly employee performance reviews. Sometimes I can't believe how many morons we have.

i have a 3g broadband card for just such an occasion, this was also the original reason i got a Treo and now have a blackjack (well other than the push email).

Nobody can stop me from chatting!

We have a proxy server with any direct connex disabled, added a filtering list that gets a lot of crap, and deny access to the usual garbage sites such as MySpace and other spyware hangouts. We read that someone had bought the domain www.googkle.com (notice the common misspelling) which would install about 17 drive by malware apps on the PC. So far, we don't have a blocked programs list in place (IM, games) but that should be in effect once school starts up. Damn kids just don't understand the logs catch everything they view and we continue to block open proxy sites on a weekly basis.

Thanks, Senior High slackers ... without you, I wouldn't have a job !! WooHoo !!

I work for a place where me and my buddy are the "It guys" so we get to do whatever we want, which brings up an interesting question...who checks the IT guys?

We used to have that policy. What destroyed it was the popularity of streaming media. Started out with radios, but not everyone knew about them, then came youtube and shit like that, all of a sudden the company was constantly running low on bandwidth and the bullshit ridiculous applications that block everything came out of the wood works.

The consultants that come and audit your company?

Ironically, when I worked at IBM and had my own office nothing was blocked. It was really a nice surprise, it let me be able to do my job looking for fixes to issues without running into blocked sites that might be flagged for some other reason. Then when I started working for a heath care company that has a cube farm, everything is blocked. Sometimes I miss being able to open up AIM and bounce a question off of friend to see if they're running into the same issue that I am on a product. Our IT department is big enough that we don't really know the network folks.
